While we have already appointed approximately 75 Headquarters staff and 29 Team Leaders and we have earned 38 quota spots across four sports, we have this month selected our first named athletes to the Rio Team. This is a momentous milestone and I am especially excited that those athletes come from my own sport of Modern Pentathlon. Brother and sister Max and Chloe Esposito won the Oceania Olympic Qualifying event in Beijing in early June to qualify by name for the Games. I was in Beijing to watch the competition and was exceptionally proud. Chloe, who finished 7 th in London 2012, won the Oceania event and finished 4 th overall in the Asian Championships. 17 year old Max, competing in his only his first ever senior season, not only won the Oceania Championship but also crossed the line first in the Asian Championships, in the process beating the London Olympic Silver Medallist from China. It was an outstanding performance from them both and continues the Esposito Olympic tradition with their father, and now coach, Daniel having competed in the 1984 Los Angeles Games in Pentathlon. Max competed in the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympics while his other sister, Emily, competed in shooting in the 2010 YOG in Singapore and would love to join Max and Chloe in the Rio team. Now that we have named athletes selected into the Team, our planning and preparations become even more real. This is why we all do what we do whether we are Chef de Mission, a Team Leader, a doctor or a media liaison officer, or whether we work behind the scenes we all do our very best in our respective roles to enable young Australians to pursue their dream of being an Olympian. Seeing Chloe and Max in action, seeing their enormous smiles when they crossed the line, seeing the joy and pride on their parent’s faces – that’s what makes all our work worthwhile. Many sports are now in the midst of their qualification periods and we have seen some great results from European events in recent weeks, including some historic performances – our men’s Volleyball team beating world powerhouse Italy for the first time ever; our women Beach Volleyballers getting on an international podium for the first time in eight years; our women’s Rugby Sevens team winning the London World Series event and then qualifying for Rio and most recently the women’s Football Team becoming the first Australian team to win a World Cup knockout match. We know competition will be extremely tough in Rio, as at any Olympic Games but Australians are performing exceptionally well across a wide range of sports and there is a genuine and deserved feeling of optimism. World Championships in the next couple of months in Swimming, Track and Field and Rowing set to be our three largest sections in Rio will give us an even better indication of how we are tracking against the world’s best. Message from the Chef de Mission

Hello Colleagues,

We have a Team! Chloe, who finished 7th

in London 2012, won the Oceania event and finished 4th overall in the Asian Championships.

This is why we all do what we do –whether we are Chef de Mission, a Team Leader, a doctor or a media liaison officer, or whether we work behind the scenes – we all do our very best in our

respective roles to enable young Australians to pursue their dream of being an Olympian. Seeing Chloe and Max in action, seeing their enormous smiles when they crossed the line, seeing the joy and pride on their parent’s faces – that’s what makes all our work worthwhile.

Many sports are now in the midst of their qualification periods and we have seen some great results from European events in recent weeks, including some historic performances – our men’s Volleyball team beating world powerhouse Italy for the first time ever; our women Beach Volleyballersgetting on an international podium for the first time in eight years; our women’s Rugby Sevens team winning the London World Series event and then qualifying for Rio and most recently the women’s Football Team becoming the first Australian team to win a World Cup knockout match.

We know competition will be extremely tough in Rio, as at any Olympic Games but Australians are performing exceptionally well across a wide range of sports and there is a genuine and deserved feeling of optimism. World Championships in the next couple of months in Swimming, Track and Field and Rowing – set to be our three largest sections in Rio – will give us an even better indication of how we are tracking against the world’s best.

Since the last Communique we have appointed three more Team Leaders - Wayne Lomas in Swimming; Michael Hetherington in Diving and Peter Ridgeway has been appointed as Team Leader for Modern Pentathlon. Congratulations to all three and welcome to the Team!

prepared than anyone else to take advantage of this.

A key planning milestone will be in August when I travel to Rio for the Chef de Mission seminar. That will be the opportunity for the Organising Committee to provide us with the CdM Manual – our ‘bible’ for planning. It will also be an opportunity for us to seek clarification on numerous questions the AOC and our sports have. We will have tours of Venues in all four Zones and we will also visit the Village and the extra official’s accommodation – BV4. This will really help us to fine tune our planning in respect of accommodation to ensure that the Village remains a performance focussed environment.

The week following the CdM seminar we have several sports joining us on an NF Planning Visit. This is an unofficial visit and although we will not have access to any venues, it will be an ideal opportunity for those sports who have never competed in Rio, to gain a general level of familiarisation with the city, the transport and our out of Village hub - The Edge.

At the same time I will also have the opportunity to observe three test events – sailing, road cycling and open water swimming. It will be great to not only see Australian athletes in action, but to also see Rio and the Organising Committee in ‘event mode’.

I wish all sports with qualification events and World Championships coming up soon the very best of luck andI look forward to seeing you all on the #RoadtoRiosometime soon.

filled once athlete qualification is determined in those sports.

Through the Campaign Rio forums, we are continuing to have regular and comprehensive contact with the Team Leader cohort, which has been a fantastic opportunity for exchange of information and best practice sharing between sports. The next Forum will be held in November with a one day Team Leader specific session on November 12th at the AIS. This will be the 2nd last Campaign Rio Forum, with the final session planned for Sydney in late February 2016.There is a real sense of One Team amongst the Team Leader group, something that I certainly hope will spread to the whole Team. One Team was one of the key messages of the recently completed IGNITE series and we are already seeing that in action with many athletes wishing good luck to and congratulating other sports through social media. This was one of the key outcomes we were looking for from IGNITE and it is very pleasing to see it happening – keep that social media support coming!

The second stage on our Road to Rio will be the ASPIRE sessions. Planning is well underway for these sessions, which will start in November. While the IGNITE sessions were not mandatory, ASPIRE will be compulsory for all prospective Team members, and we will be seeking the continued cooperation and support of Team Leaders to ensure your athletes and officials attend.

On the planning front the AOC staff continue to ensure that no stone is left unturned to provide our . sports with the best platform for success – in respect of operations, logistics and all the other components that go on behind the scenes. We all know that Rio will be a complex and challenging environment and we must be better planned and

FUN FACT #2 – Coffee

Brazil is the largest producer of coffee in the world. The main feature of the coffee grown in Brazil is the great diversity due to differences in soils, climate, species and varieties, and cultivation techniques in each region.

FUN FACT #3 – Sugar Loaf

One of the main attractions in Rio, Sugar Loaf, is 1,296 feet above sea level and there are speculations that it consists of a single block of 6 million-year-old gneiss-granite, which comes from the separation between South America and Africa.

FUN FACT #4 – Angra do Reis

Angra dos Reis is a Brazilian municipality located in the southern part of Rio de Janeiro and includes in its territory 365 offshore islands, one for every day of the year (except leap years).

FUN FACT #5 – Stars

The stars on the flag of Brazil represent the sky over Rio on the night of November 15 1889, the date of the proclamation of the Brazilian republic.

Looking to Rio

FUN FACT #1 – Japanese Brazilians

Back in the early 20th century, Japan was fearing a population crisis. So the government chose to promote emigration as a policy. Hundreds of thousands of Japanese left, and the majority of them went to Brazil to seek their fortunes on coffee plantations. While Japan expected most to return when they were richer, only 7 percent went back. As a result, Brazil is home to 62 percent of Japanese people living outside of Japan (including descendants of Japanese emigrants).

Yet there’s a twist to the story. During the 1980s, Japan sought foreign workers for its car industry, which was taking off in a big way. Where better to find them than Brazil, which was full of people that already spoke the language and knew the culture? Various incentives led hundreds of thousands to head back to Japan. This has put it straight back in the situation it was in a century ago: Japan has population problems, and now is trying to pay people to go back to Brazil. Despite the Japanese government offering to cover the costs of plane tickets, many don’t wish to return to South America. Japan’s public services are better, and Brazil has been troubled by corruption and unemployment. The whole situation has left a lot of families divided, geographically and culturally, between two very different places
