Rocker is the amount of curve from the nose to the tail and determines the turning characteristics of your board. The more curve the board has the easier it will turn, but it will also mean you have less drive. Generally, if you are surfing tight in the pocket or hollow, punchy waves you’ll need a board with more rocker. If the waves are fat and slow, then a flatter rocker will be better for maintaining speed through the dead sections.

The bottom contour is the curve from rail to rail and is perhaps the most complex and debatable element of board design.CONCAVE: Feeds water under your board and out through the tail, giving it more speed and acceleration. Varieties include single concave, double concave and single to double concave (single under the front foot feeding into a double under the back foot).CHANNELS: Designed primarily for clean surf, channels will give your board Road Runner - like speed and are great for power carves. The negative is they can tend to “track” on the wave face if too deep.VEE: Designed to guide the board from rail to rail quickly, the Vee design is increased movement compensates it’s lack in speed.

DEPTH: The depth is the length of the fin from base to tip,or the distance it protrudes into the water. It affects the hold the fin has in a turn and the greater the depth the more control a board will have.BASE LENGTH: Base length affects the amount of drive and speed the board has. The greater the base length, the greater the drive.RAKE: The rake is the angle that the fin top’s trailing edge sweeps back beyond the fin’s rear point. Fins with plenty of rake cut through the water well and are good for big turns. Less rake means tighter turning arcs.FLEX: Stiff fins with a small amount of flex have more speed and feel. Heavy flex fins are more forgiving and are better for novice surfers.

LOW RAILS: Very sensitive and tend to bite into the wave face. Good for bigger or hollow waves and longer, smoother turns.

BOXY/FULL RAILS: More forgiving and suited for shorter, quick turns. Good for small-wave surfing and they also give the board more volume.

In 2011 Rip Curl opened the doors to the most technologically advanced surfboard factory in Asia. The new 750-square-meter facility on Bali’s surf-drenched Bukit peninsula rivals any surfboard factory in the world. It’s now an annual destination for the best shapers in the business. Darren Handley, Wade Tokoro, Timmy Patter-son and Phil Byrne are among the respected craftsmen who have visited the factory this year to shape boards and test their new designs in Bali’s world-class surf, just like they have done every winter on the North Shore of Oahu for decades. Rip Curl uses only the highest quality foam, fiberglass and resin at its new factory. They are the exact same materials used by leading manufacturers in Australia, Europe, Hawaii and California. DARREN HANDLEYBred in the legendary pointbreaks of Queensland’s Gold Coast, Darren Handley has lived and breathed surfing his entire life. At the age of 12 he started sweeping floors at the local surfboard factory, which eventually led him to Murray Bourton’s infamous Pipedream shop where Darren learned all the aspects of board production. MF SWIVEL - Mick wanted a fun board to play around on when he wasn’t competing on the tour. The result was the Swivel. This wide nose hybrid is all about having fun. Ride it 3-4 inches shorter and 3/4 - 1 inch wider than your normal short board. Ride it as a thruster or twinny, either way it’s going to be one of the best fishes you have ever owned. I have made a few changes to the 2010 Swivel. There is a touch less rocker and more thickness throughout. This extra volume allows Mick to ride a smaller board in smaller waves and still have the carry and speed to throw the board around in small waves

The Jelly Bean keeps you in the water on even the smallest of days. You can get either a round tail, small squash or a swallow tail. A perfect board to have in your quiver for those small days when you still want to get wet.

No matter the era, it seems like the best surfers of the day are always shredding on a Byrne. In the seventies, it was guys like Shaun Tompson and Larry Bertleman pushing the limits on Byrne single fins. In the eighties it was Tom Carroll winning two world titles rid-ing Phil Byrne shapes. Presently, it’s Aussie wonderkid Owen Wright blowing minds and reinventing the sport on Phil’s highly refined shortboards. When the world’s best surfers make their an-nual winter migration to the North Shore of Oahu, their first stop is Wade Tokoro’s east side surfboard factory. Tokoro, who’s been making boards for over 25 years, is hands-down the most respected shaper in Hawaii. Some of the biggest names in surfing rely on Tokoro’s experience for their Hawaii quivers, includ-ing CJ Hobgood, Dusty Payne, Jamie O’Brien, and the late Andy Irons, who won mul-tiple Triple Crown titles on Tokoro pintails. Alan Emery grew up surfing the perfect righthanders of Lennox Point in north-ern New South Wales, Australia. Over the years, Al’s boards have been the choice of numerous Australasian Pro Junior, WQS and WCT surfers. When he’s not out surf-ing with his teamriders, you can find Al in the lab working with new materials, de-veloping new designs and overseeing the production process. Allan Byrne is an old-school ripper. In 1981 he finished 23rd in the world and took second place at the Pipe Masters. He was also national surfing champion of his native New Zealand for a decade. Despite his competitive success, Allan has always considered himself a surfboard shaper before a professional surfer. “I only went in the comps so that I could surf Pipe with just five other guys,” admits Allan. “I wasn’t going to throw away the opportunity to get all those empty waves.”

Now Rip Curl has succeeded in building the first-rate Bali board factory Allan envisioned 30 years ago. After visiting the facility and break-ing in the new shaping bay, Allan has bestowed his seal of approval. “I’ve shaped throughout America, Australia, New Zealand and Japan, and without a shred of a doubt it’s the best factory I’ve ever been in,” says Allan. “I’m blown away by the quality of the glass jobs the local guys are producing. I’m fastidious about everything being just right on my boards. I wasn’t prepared to let anything go wrong and give customers a second-rate product with my name on it. But I would say the boards being made in Bali are as good as any in the world.”

A gifted craftsman, Allan is renowned for his origi-nal hand-shaped channel-bottom boards. He start-ed shaping surfboards on the west side of Oahu in 1969. A few years later he moved to his present lo-cation on Australia’s Gold Coast, where he shaped for many of the best surfers of the day like Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew and Gary “Kong” Elkerton. In the early eighties, Allan was part of a crew of surfboard manufacturers looking to set up the first-ever board factory in Bali. “It never worked out because customs wouldn’t release the materials,” says Allan. “So we ended up giving up and going on a boat trip to G-Land instead. There were only two people staying in the camp and we got a ten-foot swell. I’ve never seen anything like it to this day.”

Still highly manouverable but secure in the power. A full blown Indo Gun but still feels like you are driving a sports car.

7’6” = Blue Marlin Bloody Serious, take it to Outside Corner, Lighthouse, Nusa Dua, as well as Sunset Beach and Pipeline. You are ready. With all quivers, keep your width the same from 6’2” to 7’6”. This way each board has similar rail to tail characteristics. Just fatten them up for more paddle. Now your ready to call Scardy (International Surf Travel organiser and expert) off the bomb at Speedies. But don’t say “I told you so”. AB.

Coming to the North Shore of Oahu and ordering a custom Sunset gun from Owl Chapman is a long-standing rite of passage for any young surfer seeking to prove himself. An apprentice to Dick Brewer, Owl is a legend of the early seventies North Shore surf scene who’s been making beautiful and function-al boards for 38 years. His trademark sleek, finely-crafted single-fin guns are some of the most revered

boards in all of surfing, and the perfect weap-on for tackling a big day at Outside Corner or G-Land. At 60, Owl still rides big Sunset Beach with style and still turns out some of the best big-wave boards around. He’s more than excited to be collaborating with Rip Curl Surfboards. Owl and Rip Curl have had a good re-lationship ever since he showed up at Bells Beach one year straight off the plane from Hawaii with nothing but boardshorts. “The Rip Curl guys gave me some great wetsuits at Bells,” says Al. “They were really good to me. Those were some really warm suits and I couldn’t have done it without ‘em. It’s so damn cold at Bells, it’s impossible to surf there without a good wetsuit.” Owl is looking forward to returning to Bali, where he’s logged plenty of memorable sessions over the years. “The first day I showed up in Bali, I caught Uluwatu 12 feet and beautiful, and I was the only guy in the water,” recalls Owl. “I was on the cliff with 30 Australians and they all ran away and went to Padang and left me all alone.”

One of the first shapers to make boards for Rip Curl, Richard Evans began his career in 1969 after being hired on-the-spot at Bells Beach by RC founder Brian Singer. Back then Richard was getting paid just $10 per board, but the average wage was only around $30 per week, so he wasn’t complaining. “It was the perfect setup for a young surfer,” says Richard. “I made enough money to survive every week, and was able to surf a lot.”

Richard has been coming on surf trips to Bali since 1977. In 2009, after learning about Rip Curl’s new board manufacturing de-velopment in Bali, he decided to move here permanently and get in early on the impending surfboard boom. Now Rich-ard is the resident full-time shaper for Rip Curl Surfboards in Indo. He works closely with many of the top professional In-donesian surfers to refine their equipment, and is always available for a shaping appointment to talk design and what you want from your next board. “It’s really a shaper’s dream,” says the 43-year shaping veteran of working in Bali. “We’re in an en-vironment where there’s good surfers coming through all the time and the waves are always perfect to test out new designs.” Richard has also been instrumental in establishing the highest standards of production inside the new factory. “It’s as good a factory as I’ve ever worked in,” he says. “I’ve been working with surfboards for 43 years now, and the quality here is as high or higher than anywhere in the world.”

Raised in Newport Beach, California, Don Johnston relocated to the North Shore of Oahu in 1977, after a two-week vacation to Hawaii turned into 29 years. Don has always been a seeker of quality waves and maximum perfor-mance in his surfing equipment, which explains why he’s made regular shaping and surfing pilgrimages to Japan and Indonesia since the early 80’s. After shaping for practically every top label on the North Shore, Hoey relocated again, this time to Bali. For the past two years, he has shaped boards for Rip Curl in Indo and helped get the manufacturing process running seamlessly. “It’s on par with any great manufacturing setup I’ve seen anywhere in California, Japan or Hawaii,” says Don of the Rip Curl Surfboard factory in Bali. “These guys have stepped right up.”
