Mike Grainsky enters

his third year as head

coach of the Tigers. Last

season, the Tigers went

18-8-1 and finished the

season ranked tenth in

the national rankings.

In addition, the Tigers

made the ECAC East

Playoffs for the fourth

consecutive season,

knocking off then #4

Manhattanville in

January. Grainsky earned 2004-2005 ECAC East

Co-Coach of the Year honors.

In his two seasons at RIT, Grainsky has

coached AHCA JOFA All-American Jen

Gorczynski and six All-ECAC East Conference

selections.

Grainsky began his coaching career in 1977

at the University of Connecticut, serving as an

assistant coach. While at UConn, Grainsky,

helped implement the program’s first off-ice

training program and helped recruit high

school and prep school student-athletes, some-

thing that had not been done before at UConn.

In 1980, he was the goaltender coach at

University of New Haven. He also served as the

head coach at Rockville High School in

Rockville, Conn. in 1980-81, winning a league

championship. In 2000, he began a four-year

stint as the goaltender coach at the Exeter

Hockey School. In 2005, Grainsky also coached

at the Cornell University Hockey Camp.

In the summer of 2001, Grainsky was a

goalie coach at the U.S. Olympic Training

Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. That fall

he moved onto Trinity College as an assistant

coach in the men’s ice hockey program. While at

Trinity, Grainsky worked primarily with the

goaltenders and mentored goaltender Doug

Kiselius, who became an AHCA JOFA All-

American in 2005.

For the second consecutive summer,

Grainsky was selected by USA Hockey to coach

at the 15-16 year old National Festival at the

Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y.

Grainsky worked closely with U.S. National

Team Head Coach Ben Smith.

Grainsky graduated from the University of

Connecticut in 1977 with a Bachelor’s degree in

physical education. He went on to earn a master’s

degree in sports studies from UConn in 1979.

He attended Concordia University in Montreal,

Quebec in 1977, earning six master’s credits.

While at Concordia, he was selected as a U.S.

Group Leader for the Canadian Sports

Delegation that traveled to the U.S.S.R. on a

coaching exchange program with coaches from

the U.S.S.R. Olympic Team.

Grainsky has two daughters, Alana (20) and

Jamie (17).

Jen Gorczyski, one of

the most prolific scorers

in RIT Women’s Hockey

history, returns to RIT as

an assistant coach for the

2005-06 season.

Gorczynski, a Rochester

native, was a three-time JOFA ACHA All-

American earning one First Team selection and

two Second Team honors. In addition, she was a

three-time All-ECAC East First Team member.

Gorczynski was also two-time recipient of the

RIT Hockey Fans Choice Award. In 2004,

Gorczynski was named the RIT Senior Female

Athlete of the Year.

In her four seasons as a Tiger, Gorczynski set

RIT career defenseman records with 66 goals and

127 points. In 2001-02, she set career highs with

21 goals and 21 assists for 42 points. Overall, she

is second in career goals, third in points and

fourth in assists at RIT. A three-year captain,

Gorczynski led the Tigers to an outstanding 69-

26-8 record during her four seasons.

Currently, Gorczynski works for the

Rochester Americans as an Account Services

Representative.

Marty Gordon begins his third season as an

assistant supporting players with both their

athletic and academic goals.

Gordon is an Associate Professor in the

Mechanical Engineering Technology program

within the College of Applied Science and

Technology and is a registered professional

engineer.

Joe Delgado and Jacques Nodar begin their sec-

ond season as off-ice trainers for the RIT

Women’s Hockey team. Both are ACE Certified

trainers as well as holding many other certifica-

tions in various areas in exercise. Delgado is a

2001 RIT graduate and Nodar graduated from

Geneseo State in 2000. Their primary responsi-

bilities to the team are to conduct spinning

exercises, core development and plyometrics.

Delgado and Nodar are also personal trainers

and group exercise instructors at RIT.

• 2005 Season Outlook •

The 2005-06 season wil be historic for RIT

Women’s Hockey, as this year marks the pro-

gram’s 30th season. The Tigers enter the 2005-

2006 season looking for its first ECAC East

championship. Last season, RIT finished 10th

in the final USCHO.com national women’s

hockey poll, earned 18 wins and a trip to the

ECAC East Semifinals.

Captain Stacey McConnell, a junior

defenseman, and assistant captains, Lindsay

Latour and Isabelle Richard will lead the Tigers

on and off the ice in 2005-06. RIT Head Coach

and 2004-05 ECAC East co-Coach of the Year

Mike Grainsky feels that the three captains will

be great leaders and states that all three bring a

different style of leadership.

“Stacey has a wealth of experience at many

different levels,” said Grainsky. “She stepped

right in last season after transferring from

Division I University of Findlay and led us on

and off the ice. Lindsay is the vocal leader, the

cheerleader type, who gets the team going with

her hard-nosed play. Lindsay is our energizer

bunny, our spark plug. Isabelle is our quiet

leader, who lets her on-ice performance do

the talking.”

Offense

RIT will look to replace three of its top four all-

time scorers. Alysia Park, Kasie Strong and

Kendra Bredlau combined for 180 goals, 220

assists and 400 career points. Look for an infu-

sion of talent throughout the lineup to bolster

scoring.

Richard and senior Nicole Gedney will

be counted on to carry the load offensively.

Richard tallied 11 goals in her rookie season,

including a team best four game-winners,

while adding nine assists for 20 points. On

February 16th, the explosive forward scored

two goals, including the game-winner, in a

dramatic 6-5 come-from-behind overtime

win over Utica.

Gedney enters her final season with 42

career points and is a very experienced player.

Senior Kaley Ostanek is back and will look

to mirror her production from the 2002-03 sea-

son, where she scored 27 points in 27 games.

Latour, the 2003-04 RIT Rookie of the Year is

back to provide an immeasurable work ethic

and has a knack for scoring clutch goals.

Sophomores Sarah Wilson and Allison

Bernstein are back to play key roles. Wilson is a

rugged forward who has a nose for the net.

Bernstein has improved in every aspect of her

game since the beginning of the 2004-05 season

and Grainsky believes that will continue.

Newcomers Brittany Davies, Maegan

Geypens and Dayna Birch all showed outstand-

ing scoring ability at the junior level, and

Grainsky believes that all three will make signif-

icant contributions to the Tigers offense.

Freshman Jessica Ciaramella brings tough-

ness and hustle in a five-foot tall frame and will

surely be an exciting player to watch.

Sophomores Rachel Chrash and Becky

Jaiven along with newcomers Jerica Young,

Chandra Baker and Kathryn Reinhold will add

depth up front for the Tigers.

Defense

Looking to lead a young defense, McConnell

will be counted on to carry the load both offen-

sively and defensively. Last season, she evolved

into one of the premier blue-liners in the

nation, earning All-ECAC East First-Team hon-

ors. McConnell ended the season on fire, scor-

ing a goal in the team’s final five games and

nine goals in the final eight games. McConnell

scored 16 points in conference play and ended

the season fourth on the team in scoring, with

11 goals and 12 assists for 23 points, with a

plus-17 rating.

Kiersten Shinrock returns for her sopho-

more season. She is fully recovered from a

handful of injuries last season and will help add

experience to a young defensive corps.

Freshmen Samantha Bergan, Courtenay

Cooper and Chelsea Palmer will all see signifi-

cant ice time and will look to grow together to

form a tough defensive unit.

Goaltending

In goal, Grainsky feels that RIT has two num-

ber one netminders in junior Nicki Werner

and sophomore Breanna Dobbe. Last season,

both goalies shined at various points through-

out the season, winning nine games apiece.

Werner recorded a 2.17 goals against average

and a .922 save percentage. Dobbe went unde-

feated for nearly four months and finished 9-

3-1 with a 2.09 goals against average and .909

save percentage.

“I am very confident in the abilities of both

goaltenders,” said Grainsky. “These are two No.

1 goalies that give us excellent depth. Like last

season, both will play major roles and are

capable of stealing games for us with their

strong play.”

Schedule

As in years past, the Tigers’ non-conference

schedule includes some of the best teams in the

country, including road games against national

powers Plattsburgh State, Elmira, Utica and

Wilfred Laurier University. Plattsburgh was

among the top teams in the nation for all of the

2004-05 season, while Elmira won the NCAA

Division III Championship in 2002 and 2003

and was ranked first in the nation for the

majority of last season and played in the 2005

NCAA Championship game. Utica finished just

behind both teams in the ECAC West last sea-

son, and spent a good portion of the year

nationally ranked. Wilfred Laurier are the

reigning Canadian National Champions.

RIT plays 19 ECAC East games this season,

including two on the road with perennial

power Manhattanville. On February 7, 2006,

RIT and Manhanntanville will play the

USCHO.com Women’s Hockey Game of the

Week, which will be webcast live nationally on

the USCHO.com website. The Tigers begin

their 30th season with two home games versus

Southern Maine on Nov. 5-6. They also play

conference foes New England College, Salve

Regina, MIT, St. Michael’s and Holy Cross at

the Frank Ritter Arena. Also included in the

conference schedule are road trips to play U-

Mass Boston, Castleton State and St. Anselm’s.

“Our schedule is very challenging, as we

play five top-10 teams from last season.” said

Grainsky. “I don’t know of too many teams in

the country who can say they play this caliber

of a schedule.”

The Tigers once again have one of their

most diverse teams this season, with players

from nine different states and three Canadian

provinces. It is a team that can possibly play

deep into March, and participate in the NCAA

Tournament.

• Academic Success •

For more than a century, the standard for inter-

collegiate athletics has been established at

Rochester Institute of Technology.

With a student population of 15,300, RIT is

known not only for its academic excellence, but

also for its achievement in intercollegiate athlet-

ics at a national level. For the 20th consecutive

year, U.S. News and World Report has named

RIT one of the leading comprehensive universi-

ties in the north in terms of academic reputa-

tion. RIT’s student athletes are no exception.

Last year, student-athletes posted a 3.17

grade point average on a 4.0 scale, exceeding the

institute average of 3.05.

The 2004-05 RIT Women’s Hockey team

posted a 3.24 grade point average, and had

Allison Bernstein achieve a perfect 4.0 GPA dur-

ing the Spring academic quarter.

Today, RIT offers 24 varsity sports, including

men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and

women’s crew, men’s and women’s soccer,

women’s tennis and women’s volleyball in the

fall. Winter competition includes men’s and

women’s basketball, men’s and women’s ice

hockey, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s

and women’s indoor track and wrestling. Spring

competition features baseball, men’s and

women’s crew, men’s and women’s lacrosse, soft-

ball, men’s tennis and men’s and women’s out-

door track.

Each year, more than 550 student-athletes

compete on RIT athletic teams. Ten percent of

these athletes are hearing impaired students that

are enrolled in the National Technical Institute

for the Deaf, one of RIT’s eight colleges.

With the exception of men’s ice hockey,

which will be playing its inaugural season as a

Division I program in 2005-06, RIT is a

Division III institution that joined the NCAA in

1958-59. The Tigers compete in the Eastern

Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC), Empire

8 and New York State Women’s Collegiate

Athletic Association (NYSWCAA).

The successes of Tiger athletics have spread

throughout the community and nation, rein-

forced by continuing support from the media.

Several student-athletes are recognized for

their outstanding achievements. Last year, bas-

ketball standout Sean Murphy and tennis star

David Chachu split the men’s senior athlete of

the year award, while Sarah Ballard of the vol-

leyball team and Kasie Strong of the women’s

hockey team garnered the women’s female ath-

lete of the year award.

Murphy enjoyed a banner season, leading

RIT in scoring, averaging 17.6 points per game,

as the basketball team finished 19-9. He con-

cluded his stellar career with 1,191 points, sev-

enth all-time in RIT history. Murphy set the

career mark for 3-pointers made and attempted

(223-for-581). Murphy scored 493 (17.6 ppg)

points in 2004-05, 13th most in one season at

RIT. He was named a 2005 ESPN The Magazine

1st Team All-District College Division Academic

All-American. Murphy also earned First Team

All-Empire 8 and First-Team JP Morgan Chase

Scholarship All-Tournament Honors, while

being named to the D3Hoops.com All-East

Region Second Team.

Chachu enjoyed a tremendous final season,

tying his single season record of 15 wins (also

set in 2003-04), while being named the Empire

8 Player of the Year and earning First-Team

honors for the fourth consecutive year. Chachu

became RIT’s all-time leader in singles wins,

with 48. Chachu went 9-2 in the spring, includ-

ing wins in all three Empire 8 Tournament

matches. Chachu finished with 37 doubles wins

in his storied career, a Tiger record as well.

Ballard, a setter, led the Tigers to their sec-

ond consecutive ECAC Championship, while

earning tournament MVP honors. The four-

year starter earned First Team All-Empire 8

honors and First Team Co-SIDA District I All

Academic Team accolades, NYSWCAA and

AVCA All-New York Honorable Mention hon-

ors. Ballard led the Empire 8 with 1,466 assists

and 11.54 helpers per game. Ballard led RIT to

105 wins in four years. She finishes her career

second all-time in assists at RIT with 5,788. The

5,788 assists are also seventh all-time in NCAA

Division III history.

Strong, a three-year captain on the women’s

ice hockey team, ends her Tiger career as the all-

time leader in assists with 83, and is second all-

time in goals (53) and points (136). RIT fin-

ished 18-8-1 in 2004-05. In her four seasons

as a Tiger, Strong led the Tigers to a sterling

76-28-6 record.

High-tech industry, entertainment, history and

culture, sports and recreation - you’ll find it all

in Rochester. There are more than a dozen col-

leges and universities located in the area, where

more than 60,000 undergraduate and graduate

students call Rochester “home.” RIT’s 1,300-acre

campus is located in the suburbs, about six miles

from downtown.

The Genesee River - one of the few north-

flowing rivers in the world - cuts through the

center of the city, where it tumbles 96 feet at

High Falls before flowing into Lake Ontario. The

greater Rochester area is home to more than one

million people, making it the third-largest met-

ropolitan area in New York State.

Rochester has a strong technology-based

economy and consistently ranks among the top

10 exporting cities in the United States.

Eastman Kodak Company, Bausch & Lomb

Corporation, Xerox Corporation, and a host of

smaller companies have a strong presence in the

area. Local companies exported more than $14

billion in products and services to 165 countries

this past year - exceeding the exports of 40 other

states in the nation.

From the wine country of the Finger Lakes

(80-plus wineries) to the shores of Lake Ontario,

Greater Rochester has a rich and vibrant charac-

ter. You will find historic architecture, festivals

and plenty of shopping, dining and entertain-

ment options throughout the region. If you love

the outdoors, there are parks, beaches, golf

courses, ski resorts, mountains, gorges, lakes and

streams to provide opportunities for recreation

and sightseeing.

The Spirit of Ontario is Rochester’s new fast

ferry that connects this region with Toronto. The

ferry is a luxury vessel that can accommodate

approximately 750 people, up to 220 vehicles

and up to 10 buses or trucks. Travel time is just

over 2 hours from port to port. The Rochester-

Toronto Ferry is just like a mini-cruise ship with

state-of the-art amenities.

A sports town during any season, Rochester

is home to several professional sports teams -

the Americans (ice hockey), Red Wings

(baseball), Knighthawks (indoor

lacrosse), Rattlers (lacrosse), and

Raging Rhinos (soccer). Each sum-

mer, the Buffalo Bills training camp

comes to town. Rochester is also

home to an annual stop on the

LPGA tour. World-ranked Oak Hill

Country Club also hosted the 2003

PGA Championship and has been the site

of many other major golf championships,

including the U.S. Open and Ryder Cup.

The editors of Baseball America magazine

recently voted Rochester the best minor league

baseball town in the nation. Fan and community

support, a winning tradition and a classic stadi-

um at Frontier Field contributed to this top

ranking. Rochester’s newest sports venue,

PAETEC Park, a 17,500 seat multi-purpose sta-

dium, opens in 2006.

If that is not enough, you can always cheer

on the Tigers, where RIT is home to 24 varsity

teams: www.ritathletics.com.
