Erna is originally from Germany. She worked for the U. S. Army’s Special Services, (the entertainment branch of the American military created in 1940) and relocated to Connecticut after WW2.

On Sunday June the 3rd, a piano player named Kolt performed for the residents at River Valley. Erna attended the event and told LEC Wendy the story of a pianist in Germany named Charlie who played so beautifully. She spoke of how she loved Kolt’s performance and said that he plays Chopin better than Charlie did all those years ago.

Wendy called Kolt, who by day is a college campus police officer, and asked him if he would do a special performance for Erna at his convenience. Kolt jumped at the opportunity to serve and replied he would be right over after work. Kolt serenaded Erna and brought fond memories of Germany to her, once again.

Nurse News with Mary July is National Blueberry Month!

In July 2003, the US Department of Agriculture announced July as National Blueberry Month in the United States! Native to North America, blueberries are grown in 35 out of 50 states. That translates into the US supplying roughly 95% of the entire world’s crop. Blueberries are in full seasonal swing somewhere from April through October, but July is known as prime blueberry season.

Experts often include blueberries in their “Top 10 Lists” of the healthiest foods. Blueberries contain a flavonoid called Anthocyanin which is a powerful antioxidant that gives blueberries their characteristic blue color and is responsible for many of their health benefits. Blueberries contain iron, phosphorous, calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamins K and C, potassium, and fiber. One cup of blueberries contains about 3.6 grams of fiber and 24% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C.

Many studies have suggested that increasing consumption of plant foods such as blueberries decreases the risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and overall mortality. They have been shown to help maintain a healthy blood pressure, bone strength, and mental health. Blueberries also help to prevent constipation and maintain regularity for a healthy digestive tract because of their fiber content.

Quick Tips from Blanca MC Coordinator

As the summer months are in full-speed and July is National Blueberry month!  In Memory Care, our residents thoroughly enjoy frozen blueberries as a healthy snack while sitting outside in the courtyard throughout our evening outings. We encourage you to offer frozen blueberries to your loved ones; not only are blueberries tasty, researchers from the University of Cincinnati conducted a new study that blueberries may help prevent or reduce Alzheimer's disease or dementia. Our residents also enjoy them in with some warm oatmeal for breakfast, mixed in with yogurt for a midday snack or with some ice cream for dessert! Enjoy!

Senior Moments……

Did You Know……..

Opened in July 1875, the Yuma Territorial Prison was where gunslingers, stagecoach robbers, and every other brand of outlaw could expect to end up until the site was closed in 1909. The inspiration behind (and setting of) such films as “3:10 to Yuma” and “Rawhide,” more than 3000 criminals came through the stone arch entryway in the prison’s

Birthstone – Ruby

Not surprisingly, the word ruby comes from the Latin word rubens, meaning “red.” Rubies can range in color from light raspberry to dark purple. The Mogok rubies from Myanmar, formerly Burma, are the most valuable and sought-after because of their color.

Large rubies of good quality are very rare—and very expensive. In fact, the ruby is the highest-priced colored gemstone ever sold at an auction. In May 2015, a Burmese ruby sold for $30 million at Sotheby’s Geneva auction.

July BirthdaysIn astrology, those born between July 1–21 are Crabs of Cancer. Guided by their hearts, Crabs are deeply emotional and nurturing. They create deep bonds and comfortable homes and are always willing to welcome people into their circle. Those born between July 22–31 are Lions of Leo. Leos are natural-born leaders: confident, charismatic, creative, and warmhearted. Leos also use their humor and loyalty to bring people together to work for a common cause.
