Enjoy Riverfest

WITH RITA’S!

By Lynn R. Parks

For the 17th year, the city of Seaford will welcome people into its downtown, to get to know businesses that are there and to celebrate the Nanticoke River that flows nearby.

Seaford’s annual Riverfest, with the theme “Duckin’ the heat on the Nanticoke,” will be held July 7, 8 and 9, starting with opening ceremonies at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. A carnival sponsored by the Nanticoke Rotary Club will open early that eve-ning, probably at 5 p.m.

The festival will run through Saturday evening, when Mike Hines and his band will close it out with a performance beginning at 9 p.m. The carnival will be open all three days, see schedule for Thursday.

The festival’s corner-stone event, the Nanticoke River Float In, will start at 1 p.m. Saturday at the of-fice of Benz Urology, east of town just off U.S. 13. Hundreds of participants are expected to float down the river to the city’s canoe

launch on Water Street. Registration for the

Float In will start at 11:30 a.m. Cost to float is $1; participants are asked to bring exact change and also to bring with them their own floating devices. A few inner tubes will be available for purchase, at $15 for single tubes and $20 for doubles. Service Tire Truck Centers will have an air pump at the site to blow up inner tubes. A few lifejackets will also be available for purchase for $5 each.

Children who are under 16 are required to wear lifejackets. Organizers are asking floaters to park in Seaford’s downtown and ride the shuttle to the launch site. That way, they will be near their cars when the Float In is finished. There will not be shuttles back to the launch site.

Again this year, the festival will feature horse and carriage rides from downtown to the Nanti-coke River and back. The rides will start at 4 p.m. on Friday and at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Friday’s activities will kick off at 5:30 p.m. with Little and Junior Miss Riv-erfest pageants. The com-petitions will be held on the main stage, which will be set up in the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church parking lot. Girls age 3 through 6 (little miss) and 7 through 10 (junior miss) will vie for the crowns.

The Mayor’s Challenge will also start Friday at 5:30, at city hall. Ex-actly what activity area politicians will engage in is being kept secret. Past competitions have included a row boat race and an egg toss.

At 7:30 p.m., the band “Overtime” will take to the main stage. It will be followed at 9:30 by the Bo Dickerson Band.

Saturday’s activities will get started at 9 a.m. with the Vince Morris Memorial 5K run. The race will start near the water tower on Cedar Avenue and run out to the Ross Plantation and back. Regis-tration for the run will start at 8 a.m. and will cost $15.

Registration will also start at 8 a.m. for the Riv-erfest’s Canoe and Kayak Challenge. The vessels will set out from the Water Street launch at 10 a.m.

for the 7.5-mile, out-and-back race. Cost is $15 per person, $30 per team, until July 6 and $20 per person or $40 per team after July 6. Awards will be presented at 1 p.m. near the Blades Bridge. For more informa-tion, call coordinator Aly-cia Jefferson, 245-5775, or e-mail her at [email protected].

At 9 a.m. Saturday, the festival will get into full swing, with the opening of food and arts and crafts booths and of the carnival. Registration for the youth fishing tournament, for children ages 3 to 16, will get underway at South Pine Street and registration for the Riverfest Car Show will start in Gateway Park. The fishing tourney starts at 9:30 a.m. and the car show at 10 a.m.

Also at 10 a.m., the dunking booth, sponsored

by the Nanticoke Rotary Club, will open.

Children’s activities will get underway at 10 a.m. next to city hall. At 11 a.m., the Riverfest Motor-cycle Show, to be set up at the corner of High and Conwell streets, will open.

At 1:30 p.m. on Sat-urday, the new Nanticoke River Water Trail will be commissioned. The com-missioning was postponed from last year, when rain closed the Riverfest early.

The trail goes 26 miles, from just upriver of Seaford to the mouth of the Nanticoke at the Chesapeake Bay, and is a regional component of the 3,000-mile Captain John Smith Chesapeake Na-tion Historic Water Trail. That trail, the first national water trail in the United States, commemorates Capt. Smith’s exploration

of the Chesapeake in 1608. The commissioning

will take place on the Mar-ket Street drawbridge that traverses the Nanticoke and that connects Seaford to Blades.

At 2 p.m., a pedal trac-tor pull for children 5 to 13 will get underway at the corner of High and Market streets.

The pedal tractor is provided by Hoober Inc., a tractor supply store in Sea-ford, and each participant will receive a gift from Hoober. Cost to participate is $2. This year’s Riverfest will have another stage in addition to the main stage in the parking lot of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church on High Street. The steps of City Hall will host entertainment on Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m. and a children’s talent show at 4:30 p.m.

Cat Country’s Delmar-va Star will start broadcast-ing from the main stage at 2 p.m. Saturday. The band “Anything Goes” will play starting at 6:30 p.m., followed by Mike Hines at 9 p.m.

The Duck Dash, a Riv-erfest tradition that features yellow plastic ducks racing in the Nanticoke, will start at 7 p.m. Saturday on the Blades Bridge. Throughout the day Saturday, artists with the Nanticoke River Arts will display their works along South Con-well Street.

For your information:The 17th annual Riv-

erfest will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 7, 8 and 9, in downtown Seaford. For details, visit the website www.nanti-cokeriverfest.com.

car showSaturday, July 9, 10 a.m.Sponsored by Megee Motors

From 27 cars in 1998 to 141 cars in 2009, the River-fest Car Show has grown to be an important part of the annual festival. With show sponsorship covering the costs, all registration fees go to the Nanticoke Riverfest to help grow the festival.

For the fifth year, the show is sponsored by Megee Motors, a growing, third generation dealership located in Georgetown, DE. Floyd Megee started selling Stude-bakers in 1948, successful because he took care of the customer. Now 62 years later, the dealership is owned by son Terry and his wife, Vanessa, (President and Gen-eral Manager).

Along with Floyd’s grandchildren, Lindsay (Fi-nance Manager), and Matt (Service Manager), they are still using Floyd’s Golden Rule, “take care of the

customer as you would want to be taken care of.”

Megee Motors sup-ports many charities, especially those involv-ing children. “They are our future!...close to our hearts!”

The Boys & Girls Club and Little League’s are very spe-cial organizations!

Terry Megee has been chairman of the local Rotary’s annual Winter Gala the past two years, and with tons of financial local sup-port, they’ve been able to give over $10,000 to many local non-profits. When Terry’s not at the dealership or at a meeting, you may find him in a boat fishing, or in the woods hunting. On weekends he and his family enjoy Rehoboth and Dewey Beach Life.

to sponsor a dunking booth at the annual Seaford Riv-erfest. The proceeds from the booth are used to help support our two Rotary Houses. In addition it gives the community an opportunity to dunk several of our local politicians and community leaders. We encour-age you to come out and try your hand at dunking.

Confirmed participants in this year’s dunking booth include Seaford City Councilman Bill Ben-nett, Nanticoke Hospital CEO, Steve Rose, Methodist Manor House, Jonathan Souder, Donn’s Hair Alterna-tive, Donn Tyndall and Aubrey Pitula. Stop by the booth periodically through the day to see who else will make their appearance in the dunking booth.

In 1990, the Rotary club built our first transitional shelter. Through many fund raising events and volun-teer hours, the Rotary club purchased land and built the houses debt free. The rotary club maintains both buildings, and provides rent free accommodations for up to three months while Social Services works with them to re-establish self-sufficiency, including a sav-ings program. We are honored to provide this much needed services to our community!

The Reminders are Ed Shockley, Kevin Short and John Thompson. Together they represent a lifetime of music. Individually they’ve accomplished wonderful things; written famous songs, recorded and produced all kinds of music in all kinds of styles and played on recordings all over the world... but that’s all just stuff to talk about ... they’d rather be making music together. You get the chance to hear them live on Thursday, July 7th at 6:00 p.m. on the steps of City Hall. Come be a part of an intimate time of sharing. Their corporate ‘heart’ is worth a listen and we think you’ll feel better when it’s all said and sung. The response to this new group has been over-whelming... give them a listen you’ll be glad you did.

By popular demand, Overtime will once again make their appearance at Riverfest. What makes Overtime unique is the way it was formed back in 2004. This band is led by the local popular music teacher Mark Marvel. Mark has been the music director at Indian River High School for the past 26 years, and is an excellent muscian and teacher. The rest of the band, Eric, Greg, and Tim, are all former top music students of Mark’s from Indian River High School. Mark always knew how talented these boys were, and how much they loved to play music, so the band was formed to continue their love of music.

the barren creek bandSaturday, July 9, 9 a.m. Sponsored by Beachballs.com & the Delaware Division of the Arts

The Barren Creek Band was formed in the early 90’s by Dave Davis, focusing mainly on country and oldies covers. BCB switched to “Hot Country” music in the mid/later 90’s. The band won the Froggy 99.9 Battle of the Bands competition with the prize of opening the Tangier Sound Country Music Festival before 17,000 country music fans. During the later 90’s, BCB’s music evolved more into classic rock and roll as some of the band members changed.

Today, the band continues with a classic rock theme and has been entertaining folks on the shore for nearly 20 years.

The band received a devastating blow in February 2010 when founder and band leader Dave Davis passed away from his battle with cancer. The remaining band members rallied together to keep the band going in his absence. The band continues today in his honor.

Today the band consists of: Clay Bailey, Mardela Springs, MD - Lead Guitar, Harmonica, Vocals; Bob Drehmer, Mardela Springs, MD – Keyboards, Guitar, Vocals; Steve Woolston, Cambridge, MD – Lead Guitar, Vocals, Sound; Tom Mavity, Easton, MD – Bass Guitar, Vocals, Sound; Mike Little, Millsboro, DE – Drums,

Griffin DunnSaturday, July 9, 4 p.m.Sponsored by Delaware Division of the Arts

Talent – what exactly is it? Is it the ability to do what others can’t? Or is a raw, unrefined gem, waiting to be polished? Is it the combined efforts of marketing, produc-tion, and make-up, designed to give an illusion of creativ-ity? No – talent is something much more; it’s something special. In Griffin Dunn’s case, talent comes in the form of a twelve-year old boy – buoyant with a God-given gift, and a natural energy – to provide a harmonious backdrop for the world’s ear.

Citing influences such as Justin Timberlake, Ne-Yo and interestingly enough - Justin Bieber - 12 year old Griffin Dunn’s musical competency goes beyond just his years, and beyond his singing, and into the realm of writing. After putting out his first set of viral videos in January of this year, Griffin’s already-packed schedule stepped up a few notches – professional studio sessions, a pending film script opportunity, and a potential national mall tour will keep Griffin well busy throughout the summer. Take a little talent, add a flash of brilliance, and you’ve got Griffin Dunn - American’s next big talent. Be sure to stop by the City Hall steps for your opportunity to hear this talented local artist.

Hidden idol CHallenge

The Idol will not be hidden until Saturday, July 9th. As a part of the 2011 “Duckin’ the Heat on the Nanticoke” Nanticoke Riverfest event we have reissued the hidden idol chal-lenge for our patrons. This year we will hide the idol that you see in the picture somewhere in the area of Riverfest and issue three clues that you see below. The clues are hidden in the verses of summer time songs. This year we will only be hiding the idol during the actual event. Once the idol has been found return it to the main information booth and receive a $100 cash prize. Good Luck and Happy Hunting!

CluesGet up in the morning Check out the weather If it looks like sun I get my things together Throw some cutoffs on Got my tank top and tennies now And head for the beach

Birds in all creation will be twitterin’ in the trees And down below’s a pond I know You can swim in it if you please

Brilliant days, wake up on Briliant daysShadows of brilliant ways will change all the timeMemories, burning gold memories

Would you like to be a Part of tHe nantiCoke riverfest?

The Riverfest committee is seeking volunteers to help with the event before, during and after the festivities.

Specific duties include help-ing with the children’s programs, setting-up and taking-down equipment, to work the informa-tion booths, serving on the trash crew and in many other capaci-ties.

Many positions are available depending on your abilities and time constraints.

To volunteer for this year’s Riverfest or if you are interested in serving as a Committee Mem-ber for 2012, contact us today at 302-629-9173.
