Since joining the NSU athletic staff in the summer of 1998, head golf coach Scott Varner has made a tremendous impact on the RiverHawks golf programs. Varner, the Director of Golf, serves as the NSU Athletics Strength and Condi-tioning Coordinator as well.

The 2015-16 season is Varner’s 18th at the helm of the NSU programs. He has been the Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year four times, NCAA West Region Coach of the Year two times and South Central Region Coach of the Year once.

The Stillwater native returned to his home state after a brief two-year stint at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, an NCAA Division I institution.

Prior to that, Varner led the East Central University golf teams from a fledgling program to a national contender in just a couple of years.

His ECU squads consistently were ranked among the nation’s best at the NAIA level. Varner was also the defensive line coach and strength and conditioning coordinator on the ECU football team that won the NAIA National Champion-ship in 1993, and his 1995 golf team was a mere three holes from winning the national title. Varner’s programs have always enjoyed tremendous success at

the national level.

The NSU women have made 14 appearances in the NCAA Division II National Tournament in 15 years, making seven finals appearances. They were recently ranked in the top 25 nationally for the 16th-straight year. The men have been nationally ranked in the top 25 for 15 straight years and have earned 15 NCAA trips in 17 years, including 11 in a row to the NCAA II Regional Championship.

During his career, Varner has coached 29 All-Americans and 28 Academic All-Americans, six of which were first team choices. An avid advocate of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Varner is the sponsor of the NSU FCA chapter. The legendary Tom Osborn honored Varner in 1995 when he was selected as the Southeast Oklahoma FCA Coach of the Year. In 2004, he was named the Oklahoma FCA Coach of the Year and was honored by FCA founder Don McClanen and Coach/Senator Dr. Tom Osborn. He also holds membership in the Golf Coaches Association of America, and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (C.S.C.S.) with the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the Oklahoma Coaches Association.

A two-time high school golf team champion, an All-State selection in 1979 at Stillwater High School and the State Junior Cham-pions Invitational champion in 1980, Varner was also an All-District selection in football. He lettered in golf at the University of North Texas where he helped the Mean Green to the NCAA Championship Tournament and finished 20th in the nation.

He completed his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Oklahoma State University in 1986 with a conver-sion endorsement in biology, anatomy and physiology. He earned a master’s degree in exercise science from East Central University in 1990.

Varner and his wife Monica Kay have been married for 29 years and have two boys, Michael and Brian. He and his family are members of First United Methodist Church in Claremore.

The 2014-15 campaign was the second for Kyle Fouts as a graduate assistant. He began his coaching career after competing for the NSU men’s golf team for four years.

One of the most decorated players in school history, Fouts played in 40 career tournaments and missed just one event in his illustrious career. He carded more rounds of 70 or better (10) than he did in the 80’s (8), and his career-best finish was a solo fourth at the 2010 MSSU Spring Invitational (71-77=148). He shot a career-best two-round score of 144 (74-70) at the 2012 Dave Falconer Memorial Invitational to finish T-7, and his career-low three-round score of 212 (68-74-70) was carded at the 2013 Bash at the Beach.

His best individual round of 67 came at the 2010 Lone Star Conference Championship (9th, 74-72-67). He recorded 12 career top-10 finishes and was a three-time all-conference performer (2013 All-MIAA, 2011 All-LSC, 2010 All-LSC). He was also named to the 2013 Division II PING All-Central Region team.

Fouts earned a bachelor of science degree in health and human performance from Northeastern State in 2013, and he is currently working toward a masters degree in kinesiology.

The Carrollton, Texas, native competed at Hebron High School, where he won the District 6-5A Championship as a junior and finished runner up as a senior. He was also a two-time first team all-district performer, and he is the son of Doug and Suzanne Fouts.

RIVERHAWKS MEN’S2014-15 Year-In-Review

Written by NSU Head Coach Scott Varner

The 2014-15 campaign was an up and down year for us, but over-all I was happy with how we fared. We finished in the top 3 in four of our 10 tournaments, and we had a chance late to win two of those. That production really showed how good we could be when we were good.

We started out very strong in the fall. We finished third in the first tournament of the year, which was an MIAA event. Our home tour-nament was a bit of a letdown, but I was happy with how we played in the other three tournaments in the first half of the year. The last two tournaments had incredible fields and we played on amazing courses. We had a chance to win both of those tournaments all the way down to the final three holes. We were ranked in the Golfstat Top 25 national rankings the first couple of weeks of the season, so we knew once we finished up the fall strong that we were virtu-

ally a lock for the NCAA’s.

We were able to qualify for the NCAA Super Regional, which is an honor we’ll never take for granted. We beat a lot of teams to earn that bid, and it was the 15th time in the past 17 years we have made it that far. There’s really no other team in this half of the country that has accomplished that feat. We finished third in the conference. I know there are a lot of teams that would love to finish inside the top 3, but our goal is always to win conference championships, so we were a bit frustrated there. We’ve been so close to winning the MIAA title these past three years and getting back to the national championship final. I know we will accomplish both goals sooner rather than later.

We went to regionals and had a great opportunity to advance to the national finals heading into the final round. However, we did not have the best final round and we fell down a few spots. It left a bitter taste in our mouth to close out the season in that way because we showed so much promise. When we were good, we were really good.

We were pleased that we had two all-conference players in Marc Johnson and Zach Tucker. The highlight was Zach win-ning the Washburn tournament, which was a big MIAA event. Marc was our leader for the year. He was steady throughout

the season. He was the one guy we could count on week in and week out. He was consistently in the top 10/top 15, which is why he was also named to the all-region team. Those two guys were clear highlights for us.

We graduated Zach, Josh Strimple and Brad Hager. We’re going to miss those guys because they performed well for us at various points in their careers, but we have a talented group of guys coming back. We have four of our top six players returning, and we signed some tremendous talent. I am expecting us to have a big season this upcoming year. We’re also so thankful for all our golf courses and boost-ers that support us. We wouldn’t be able to have success without them.

RIVERHAWKS WOMEN’S2014-15 Year-In-Review

Written by NSU Head Coach Scott Varner

The women started the year very strong. Each of our first four starts were solid. We were ranked inside the top 10 nationally in the Golf-stat rankings, and we stayed in the top 25 in the country until after the Florida tournament, which was our last fall event.

We posted top-3 finishes in more than half of our tournaments, which showed impressive consistency. We continued to put our-selves in the top 3, which meant that we had numerous opportuni-ties to get tournament wins. Unfortunately we just struggled to finish tournaments off.

We qualified for our 14th NCAA Regional Championship tournament and we were honored to be the host school for the third time in school history. Only a handful of schools have hosted that many Super Regionals. We are extremely proud of that fact and all of our workers that helped put on what was arguably one of the best Super Regionals ever based on what I heard from other coaches and administrators.

We are extremely proud and thankful for Hillcrest Country Club, the HCC staff, all of our NSU staff, and the Bartlesville Sports Commission. We are certainly proud that we qualified for the event in a year where we were hosting. The pressure was on because there is no automatic bid for the host.

With that being said, we were not able to advance to the national finals, which was very frustrating because we led the event deep into the tournament and were sitting inside the top 3 (the top 3 teams advance) until the final six holes of the 54-hole tournament.

There are only a handful of schools that have made 14 NCAA tournaments in the history of NCAA Division II golf, so I’m proud that we kept that tradition alive and well.

We had numerous postseason awards for individuals, both on the course and in the classroom. We are always proud of our individuals that earn awards. Our All-MIAA performers were Baylee Price, Kayla Schroeder, Lexi Armon and Charter

Lawson. Both Baylee and Kayla also made All-Region, which was quite an accomplishment.

I was also very proud to see Baylee, Kayla, Lexi, Arizona Chin, Kennedy Hudson and Fiona Hakanen all named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. On top of those prestigious awards, Baylee, Kayla, Arizona and Lexi were all also hon-ored as WGCA All-American Scholars.

We were a very young team and that explains some of our issues in closing out tournaments, but the positive side of that is we competed at a high level and we have four start-ers back for next year.

Baylee will come back as one of the 2-3 best returning play-ers in the region and one of the best in the nation. The future certainly looks bright for the NSU women’s golf pro-gram. I’m excited to see how well we perform in the 2015-16 season!18 21
