RIVERKEEPER’S MESSAGE The Riverkeeper Program’s year has continued to provide positive environmental results for the Georges River and the program laid the foundations for greater resources in coming years with the successful Green Army application and Aboriginal Riverkeeper Teams. The Riverkeeper Program aims to protect the ecological health and biodiversity of the Georges River system via the collection of litter and rubbish and the regeneration of weed infested remnant bushland. The program has continued to deliver large scale rubbish removal with 70.2 tonne of rubbish removed from the river system in 2013/14. Tony Wales Riverkeeper Coordinator DELIVERING CATCHMENT WIDE RUBBISH COLLECTION AND BUSH REGENERATION ABORIGINAL RIVERKEEPER TEAM The Aboriginal Riverkeeper team supported through funding by the Australian Government, has commenced work to restore bushland and establish ecological connectivity across 150 hectares of the Georges River catchment. The Aboriginal team is comprised of 4 Aboriginal Trainees, an Aboriginal Project Manager and a Team Supervisor. The team of bush regenerators will work at a number of project sites across the catchment. The project will provide the trainees with the opportunity to work towards the attainment of qualifications in Conservation Land Management. Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALCs) will also work in partnership with the GRCCC on this project and share Traditional Ecological Knowledge with the trainees. GREEN ARMY TEAMS The GRCCC on behalf of its member Councils prepared a successful submission to the Australian Government for 12 Green Army Projects. The projects involve three teams of up to nine participants each working to restore significant areas of bushland across the Georges River catchment. The three GRCCC Green Army teams will work in the upper, middle and lower reaches of the Georges River. The Green Army teams will add significant value to the GRCCC Riverkeeper program for the next two years.
