South Molton Museum is delighted to welcome the Art Destination South Molton Project – Autumn Dayz - and the North Devon Arts Autumn Show during
the months of October and November. Following the format of the successful Postcard-Art Show in the Parish Church in 2018, Autumn Dayz will showcase local work from amateur and profes-sional artists of all ages. The show will challenge local artists to work on a limited canvas. At the same time the Museum will be hosting the North Devon Arts (NDA) 2019 Autumn Show. NDA acts as a forum to encourage the arts where ideas and practices can grow and enable artists to develop, mature and find new modes of ex-pression.
My Boy Jack by David Haig, 8th November 2019 at 7.30pm in the New Assembly Room, South Molton. Up Close Theatre are proud to present My Boy Jack, the tragic story of how Rudyard Kipling sent his son to his death in the First World War. The year is 1913 and war with Germany is immi-nent. Rudyard Kipling's determination to send his severely short-sighted son to war triggers a bitter family conflict which leaves Britain's renowned patriot devastated by the warring of his own greatest passions: his love for children - above all his own - and his devotion to King and Country. First staged at Hampstead Theatre in 1997, the play was revived in 2004, and filmed for televi-sion in 2007, with Daniel Radcliffe as Jack and the author himself as Kipling. Tickets are £10 available from the Amory Centre.

Church Tower restoration appeal. The concert is on Friday 18th October at 7 for 7.30pm in the Church (cushions provided!) with refreshments of Cava and Canapés. There is easy disabled ac-cess and toilets nearby. The ancient Church Tower, which dates from the fifteenth century, is one of the tallest in North Devon. It needs repairs to its roof and its walls repointing, major maintenance which will help to preserve it for years to come. Please come along and enjoy this wonderful evening with us and help to save the Tower. Tickets at £10 are available now from Gillian on 01769 551702.

Funding for a new Chulmleigh project agreed
At a meeting of North Devon Council Strategy and Resources Committee on 2nd September, councillors agreed to allocate over £26,000 of Section 106 funding to Chulmleigh. Section 106 money is paid to the council by developers as part of the planning conditions of planning appli-cations, and is used primarily for public open space projects. The funding in Chulmleigh will go towards a new adventure play area at the Playing Field. Work is due to be completed by January 2020. There will be up to 22 items of new adven-ture equipment and safety surfacing.
Have your say on changes to the
Council Tax Reduction Scheme North Devon Council is carrying out a consulta-tion on proposed changes to its Council Tax Re-duction Scheme. They are proposing to make changes to its current working age council tax reduction scheme which helps North Devon resi-dents on a low income to reduce their council tax bill. Pension age customers will not be affected due to a government scheme already in place. To do this the council is planning to introduce an 'income grid scheme' to make it fairer, simpler, more affordable and easier to administer. Pro-posed changes include:
•increasing the maximum level of reduction a customer can receive •limiting the number of dependant children in the assessment to a maximum of two •reviewing what is offered to customers who have other adults living with them •changing the amount of income disregarded depending on the amount of hours a customer works and other benefits they receive
As well as these proposed changes, residents can also have their say on alternatives including the possibility of keeping the current scheme. The consultation is open until 20th October. Have your say and find out full details at www.north devon.gov.uk/consultations. Paper copies are available from Council offices at Lynton House in Barnstaple, the Ilfracombe Centre, or the Amory Centre in South Molton. They are also available by calling the Benefits Team on 01271 388877.

Don't become a victim It’s never too young to learn about the dangers of scams – that’s the message from a new educa-tional resource available to teachers and youth leaders. Young Friends Against Scams has been especially created by Trading Standards for chil-dren and young people aged eight and up. Many young people think that their familiarity with social media and the internet means they are less at risk and less likely to fall for a scam. But fraud-sters are increasingly targeting children online and this learning resource will not only help children recognise scams but give them the tools to help protect more vulnerable family members. The pack incorporates advice and information on what to watch out for with activities and games to make it a fun learning experience. Friendship at the Beacon A Dementia Friendly Church Experience
South Molton Baptist Church is starting a de-mentia friendly group, aimed mainly, but not ex-clusively, at dementia sufferers and their carers. We hope to meet at The Beacon (the new exten-sion at the Baptist Church) once a month on the 4th Wednesday afternoon at 2pm for about one and a half hours and our first meeting will be on 23rd October. We will start with a time of friendship over coffee and cake, with simple activities, such as table games, craft, or music. We will then continue onto an accessible, short act of worship, followed by a time of individual prayer if people want to. There is no obligation to stay to the whole event, if only part of it appeals.
Tree planting on the Link Road Planting of around 20,000 trees and shrubs started in September ahead of the start of the main improvements to the North Devon Link Road. The trees will be planted over 10km be-tween Filleigh and Portmore, Barnstaple, where work on widening the A361 is due to start in 2021. As the scheme progresses, further environ-mental compensation will be carried out through-out northern Devon to enable the scheme to achieve biodiversity net gain. The planting at the side of the road will help establish ecological hab-itats ahead of the Link Road being widened, and will also screen the road from surrounding areas. The plantings will have time to establish them-selves before work starts and this will help create new wildlife habitats. None of this work could be carried out without the co-operation of numerous local landowners. Devon County Council is due to submit its full business case for the scheme to the Department for Transport in summer 2020. A range of sur-veys are being carried out this year to enable the detailed design and further environmental mitiga-tion. A planning application is expected to be submitted later this year for a pedestrian and cy-cle bridge at the proposed Land-key roundabout.
