Enjoy summer safely The government is encouraging everyone to enjoy summer safely by following their advice and guidance to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. This includes adhering to social distancing (2 m where possible) keeping your hands clean, keep-ing interactions with those outside your house-hold or support bubble brief, and wearing a face covering in enclosed spaces. You should not leave home if you or anyone in your household or support bubble has corona-virus symptoms. Get a free NHS test to check if you have the virus and self-isolate until you get your results. And to help people plan days out the government has launched the 'Know Before You Go' website to help everyone enjoy days out as safely as possible. It includes advice on what to do before you leave home, how to look after yourself and each other when you're out and links to find out how different areas of the country are reopening.

Kings Nympton to benefit North Devon Councillors have agreed to £8,304 to Kings Nympton Parish Council towards new play equipment at the playing field. The Parish Council have collaborated with the Friends of Kings Nympton School, the pre-school and mother and toddler group to gather research on a range of play equipment that would best suit and benefit the community; with a zip wire being the preferred option. This improvement will bring more users to the playing field as well as benefiting the children of the community. Under Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, contributions can be sought from developers towards the costs of providing extra community and social infrastructure as a result of the impact of a new development.

Exmoor Pony Centre TA22 9QE These are strange times we are living through and, like everywhere else, the Pony Centre is in lockdown. Most of our ponies have been put out to grass or taken to other grazing sites in order to cut down on work, but all are still being checked daily in accordance with animal welfare require-ments. A few ponies still need to be exercised however, either to control their weight or for other health reasons, and they are being ridden daily. We are entering what would normally be our bus-iest time of year for visitors and events, and this is when we make around 80% of our trading in-come. Somehow we have to make up this deficit if we are going to survive so, like every other charity, we are appealing for help. We are mak-ing savings where we can. Our staff are fur-loughed and Linzi is caring for the ponies on her own, but we still have to pay the rent and, of course, there are feed bills and essential veteri-nary costs for the ponies. We are immensely grateful to those of our supporters who are un-dertaking fundraising challenges for us through Just Giving and other methods, and to everyone who has sent us a donation in response to our appeal. We are keen to stay in touch with supporters and followers through this difficult time and we have launched a kids’ club on our website with down-loadable games and puzzles which can be ac-cessed from the home page by following the link to Kids Club. Finally, we send all of you our good wishes and hope you are staying well. www.exmoorponycentre.org.uk; www.facebook. com/TheExmoorPonyCentre, Instagram #Exmoor ponycentre, Email: info@exmoorponycentre. org.uk Tel: 01398 323093

New blue recycling boxes for glass To help with short staffing during lockdown, N Devon Council asked residents to separate glass into any suitable containers they had to help speed up collections. The crews were over-whelmed by the public support for this, but have reported that they had problems tipping the glass from a lot of the containers put out. By giving everyone a proper recycling box, tipping the glass is much easier and safer. The new boxes will be delivered throughout August and September.

New Opening Times 10am to 4pm, Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. By appointment for the foreseeable future under Covid 19, PPE safety Is in place.

Tomatoes UK tomatoes grown without artificial heat can be planted in April, start ripening in August. To avoid the massive amounts of CO2 used to heat green-houses, Riverford grow super-sweet tomatoes at home without heat. The rest of the year, we truck over sun-ripened ones from Spain; this uses just a tenth of the carbon compared with growing them in the UK using heat. Don’t store your toma-toes in the fridge, for the best flavour keep them at room temperature and eat them when they reach peak ripeness – dark red and slightly soft. When tomatoes are at their peak, it’s a shame to put them in anything other than a simple tomato salad. But try a Tomato and Gruyère galette

300g all-butter puff pastry 1 egg, beaten with a pinch of salt 2–3 tsp Dijon mustard a generous handful of grated Gruyère cheese (or a strong farmhouse Cheddar)

handful of oregano or basil leaves, chopped or torn 1 heaped tsp fresh thyme leaves 3 or 4 tomatoes cored and sliced extra virgin olive oil salt and pepper

1. Roll the pastry into a rough circle or square, 2–3mm thick. Trim and lay on a baking sheet lined with parch-ment. Brush with beaten egg. Spread with mustard, stopping short of the edge by 4cm. 2. Sprinkle the cheese over the mustard, then add the herbs. Lay over tomato slices, slightly overlapping, drizzle with a little olive oil and season. 3. Fold the edges loosely over the filling as a border. Chill in the fridge for 20 minutes. Heat the oven to 190°C/Gas 5, putting a rack near the bottom. 4. Brush the rest of the egg over the pastry border and bake for 40 minutes or until the pastry is cooked through and starting to brown. If the tomatoes look like burning, cover with a piece of foil or baking parch-ment. 5. Let cool for a few minutes then slide on to a board or plate. Removal of more phone boxes? North Devon Council is carrying out the consulta-tion on behalf of BT to find out what local people think about the plans to remove seven phone boxes. The proposals are being put forward because of the low useage of the telephone boxes and the increasing extent of mobile coverage. The consultation process also gives local com-munities the opportunity to adopt a traditional red ‘heritage’ phone box and make it a community asset. Details about how to do this can also be found on the consultation page or by visiting www.bt.com/adopt Leader of North Devon Council, Councillor David Worden, says: "We want to know what local resi-dents think about BT's proposals to remove the phone boxes within the community, should they stay or go, and why? It doesn't take long to pro-vide your opinion and it doesn't need to be a lengthy response, it will however help us provide a picture to BT of what the people of North Devon think about their proposals." Comments must be received by 6th August 2020, either by email to planningcomments@north devon.gov.uk (marked ‘Phone box removal’ and identifying the phone box in question) or by post to Strategic Development and Planning, North Devon Council, Lynton House, Commercial Road, Barnstaple EX31 1DG. The boxes concerned are: Lynbridge Lynton Churchtown Parracombe Challacombe Brayford Bridge Heasley Mill George Nympton East Worlington

New safety law for private landlords Private landlords now have to make sure that fixed electrical installations are safety tested by a qualified person. N Devon Council warns land-lords who do not comply that they could face a fine of up to £30,000. The regulations will cover new ten-ancies from 1 June 2020, but will apply to all ex-isting tenancies from 1 April 2021. The new legislation requires landlords to ensure that the electricity supply in is safe - and this in-cludes arranging for an electrical safety test re-port from a qualified person at least every 5 years. Landlords have to provide a copy to their tenants, and to the Council if requested. For tenants, these regulations mean that: • The ‘fixed’ electrical parts of the property must be inspected and tested every 5 years, or more often than this if the inspector thinks necessary • The regulations do not cover electrical appli-ances such as kettles, hairdryers etc • Throughout the time a tenant is living at the property, national electrical safety standards must be met. These Regulations do not cover social housing. Tenants of housing associations should contact their housing provider if they are worried about the electrics. These Regulations also do not cov-er tenants who live with their landlord (lodgers).

New fibre broadband connections Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) has launched its Fibre Extension Programme which will provide more than 8,000 homes and busi-nesses with fibre broadband connections direct to the premises by the end of 2021. CDS is funding fibre broadband connections to over 6,000 homes and businesses which will be delivered by Airband, and thanks to the high level of take-up of broadband services in the region from previous connectivity delivered by Open-reach, CDS is re-investing £6 million to extend full fibre coverage to over 2,000 premises, again working with Openreach, thanks to the Govern-ment's “Gainshare” agreement with the company. Airband has begun engineering in N Devon and rolling-out to communities across northern, west and central Devon including Gunn, Molland and East Anstey. Survey teams working for Open-reach have begun work in Oakford, will continue north of Tiverton and south of Dulverton. Over the next two years survey will continue in Brayford, North Molton, Satterleigh and Warkleigh, South Kentisbury Ford and Twitchen.

THE FRIENDS OF SOUTH MOLTON COMMUNITY WOODLANDS The original woodlands were planted in the early 1990s on Town Council land and paths were laid later to provide access for the casual walker, those with prams and pushchairs and disabled people. The new woodlands were planted in 2014 and 2015. The Friends were formed some 15 years ago and arrange events in the wood-lands as well as helping with light maintenance. Workparties normally take place on the 1st Sun-day of the month 10.30am-1pm and are open to all. Our last event was a Wassail in January. We have taken part in a competition organised by the Devon County Show and won several times. Membership of the Friends is open to everyone and at the last AGM in March this year we had a membership of 70. Our Woodlands aim to be a haven for wild fauna and flora. For this reason cycling is prohibited throughout the woodlands and dogs are not al-lowed in the pond. Apart from this, all you need to remember is that the woods belong to the com-munity of South Molton and we hope that you will all enjoy using them. Please contact us through our website or by phoning me on 01769 572630.
