What a special year at Riverside Primary culminating in our
presentation assembly. We celebrated students Prep to 6 for their
outstanding academic achievement, application to learning, growth
in learning and as a respectful citizen.
Congratulations to the prize winners and students who were
awarded prizes and certificates.
The presentation assembly takes mammoth organisation
a special thank you to all members of the leadership team,
especially Mrs Maree Duggan and Mr Dan Kroon
to all staff involved in the co-ordination of certificates
to our amazing comperes Sienna Bowden, Jaime Ritchie,
Christian Turner, Louis Howell, Charlie Crawford and
Sophia Vincour
to those who contributed to our beautiful flower
arrangements and Fiona Taylor, Viki Elphinstone and Sue
Wood for the lovely arrangements
for the work of Sarah Van Beek, Carmel McGee, Ros
Lippis and Bronte Clarke with items and comperes
Several aspects I highlighted about Riverside Primary in my speech.
We are a school that is aspirational
We set high expectations in learning and behaviour
underpinned by our belief that Tasmanian students can be
as successful as any other student in Australia. We use
feedback to bump up and stretch our learners.
We are a school that is curious
We have a whole school approach that promotes the
skills and dispositions for learning not just the what. Our
inquiry journey has resulted in our school being
recognised as a benchmark and being invited to build the
capacity of other Tasmanian schools in 2020.
As our Grade 6’s said ‘the Learning assets are the
guidelines to success and pathway to the future’.
We are a school that is connected
We look outside of the school to build authentic
experiences for our children. We strive to build positive,
open communication with our parents and carers. We
value the partnerships we have with organisations such as
Woolworths, Riverside Lions Club, Banjos Legana and
Riverside and our Middle Years Project with Riverside
High, Trevallyn and West which focuses on an inquiry
into boys and ways to foster higher outcomes in reading.
We are a school that has courage
We think outside the square to focus on students talking
about how they are learning not only what they are
learning. This year one of our strengths is making learning
move visible for both our students and our parents
through our inquiry walls. We provide a range of
opportunities to engaged and connect students. Options
include dance, chess, coding, cheerleading, Tournament
of Minds, choir and Esk band. We strive to keep
reflecting, refining and stretching ourselves.
We are a school that is inclusive
Our students are very supportive of new students and
the staff differentiate to support the learning needs of all
our children. We are supported by a strong resource
and support team. Our students benefit from an explicit
intervention program as well as exciting and engaging
enrichment opportunities.
I would highlight the amazing support this school has from the
school community, including the School Association.
A special thank you to Grade 6 parents who are leaving Riverside
Primary for the last time. We also acknowledge past School
Chair, Sussan Best, for her work over a long period of time.
Thank you everyone for your contribution to the school.
Farewells
At this stage we farewell

Class Placements
The consultative process of deciding on the best possible
placement for students next year is very complex and time
consuming. It has involved input from teachers, students and
parents. The process involves an opportunity for parents to make
recommendations, teacher information including class history,
friendships, working relationships, behaviour, learning and
social/emotional needs and some student voice. It may not have
been possible to meet all requests, especially if there was a
multiple amount.
It is not possible to now identify requests that you did not put in
writing for 2020 and it is unlikely that there can be any changes to
classes at this date. Students will be monitored in Term 1. Please
be aware that classes may be reconfigured in the holidays if there
are significant change to numbers.
REPORTS AND PORTFOLIOS PREP-6

2019 WRITE ROAD – CELEBRATION
During the course of Term 2 and 3, some Grade 5 and 6 students participated in the Write Road Project. Our students have been
responding to writing prompts posted online by writing either a narrative or a poem.
Alongside students from West Launceston Primary and Trevallyn Primary School, students honed their writing skills, whilst giving and
receiving feedback in a collaborative environment – both together in groups and online. They have also had the opportunity to
workshop their ideas and writing with writers from Riverside High School.
On Monday, students celebrated their work and the release of the 2019 Write Road Anthology. Local author and past student Lyndon
Riggall spoke about the magic of being a writer and shared his new book, Becoming Ellie. A copy of which can be found in our school
Library.
Well done Write Road team, you should be proud of your efforts!!
Her are just a few of the great pieces of writing that were created in the program this year:
On the Rocks
Alice Daveney (Prompt 2)
On the rocks. Raging water swirling around lethal stones. A boat, pierced. Sinking slowly into the unknown, the Adventurer had been on
its maiden voyage when it was struck. Some people survived; others weren’t so lucky.
Assistance
Emma-Lee Vanderpluym (Prompt 1)
Jake stood amidst the chaos of the bustling city, a baby turtle lost at sea. Surrounding him were all sorts of regular characters, going about
their business. He searched with his eyes for a small clearing. He needed to think straight. What he had just seen couldn’t possibly have
been a reality; just a trick of the light. Yes. Surely. But there it was again. Out of the corner of his eye, Jake saw it.
A statue of polished stone, sitting on an ordinary bench. But this statue certainly wasn’t behaving ordinarily. Clasped in its smooth hands
was a newspaper, but the statue was actually reading it; not just sculpted to look like it was reading. Every few minutes, the figure would
pause, turn a page, and stretch its stony arms.
Jake, pinching himself to be sure he was truly awake, crept towards the stone figure, the same way a cat would - about to pounce on his
prey. After a short hesitation, Jake spoke.
‘Excuse me, sir?’
Nothing. Feeling stupid for believing such abnormalities, Jake turned to leave. That was when possibly the strangest event of the day
happened. The voice sounded of a man unlike any Jake had heard before. But one thing was for sure, this voice wasn’t just rattling inside
his head.
‘Do you need assistance?’
Freedom
By Lara Danziger (Prompt 1)
You were not born a statue
Nor rooted like a tree.
You were born a wild one,
A spirit pure and free.
No cage should keep you captive.
No title should define.
You’re flexible and fluid,
So can change at any time.
With nothing set in stone
And so much more to explore,
Wander down the paths
And rattle every door.
Never stop adventuring
Embrace your inner soul.
Stay fearless and curious,
Stay positive and wild.
65TH ANNUAL REPORT
What a wonderful year it has been at our school this year!
At the beginning of 2019 we returned from holidays to be welcomed with an amazing new basketball court. We were very privileged
to have the South East Melbourne Phoenix basketball NBL team join us in opening celebrations later in the year. The weather was
very kind to us and some of our older children courageously fielded teams to play against them, while our cheer team also created an
amazing display of talent. Lots of fun banter was had, whilst the other Grade 3-6s enjoyed watching and cheering.
There have been upgrades around the school that our association have participated in the decision-making process with, including the
new paths being widened, new electronic school signage and street 60kms signs which looks amazing and makes our school stand out!
Great choice and easy to read with the upcoming events. There are more developments to come as part of a highly-researched
community development plan for safety around the vicinity of our school. As part of the RPSA it is great to be able to help make
choices and have input around our school for the future of all our children.
In April, the RPSA were able to offer support to our parent community, through funding i-Gen workshops about managing technology
with our children. We were also honoured to be part of a visit by the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Councillors and the Managers of the
West Tamar Council who came and listened to our amazing core leaders share about what is happening in our school. I personally
enjoyed being able to assist in building positive connections with these valuable members of our local community. We were all blown
away by how the core leaders conducted themselves.
It was a big year with the opening of the re-development which was officially opened by the Hon Jeremy Rockliff, Minister for Education
and Training. We also welcomed Members of Council, past Riverside Primary Principals, past RPSA chair people and other important
community representatives to the event. It was a fantastic morning and enjoyed by all. The students performed ‘One Song’ which was
very heart warming. We were able to see the students perform a mixture of performances and lots of talents in the mixture. We
then were able to present our wonderful school to our visitors, with our Grade 6 leaders doing a remarkable job as tour guides,
walking our guests through the school. This was followed by a delicious morning tea (by our own canteen manager Bianca) during
which we were able to watch a slideshow of the development’s building process in action, and the children were able to further
elaborate about the developing of the school and their personal attributes.
The RPSA has run several fundraisers this year that have been well supported by our school community, and in turn have raised funds
that go directly towards big projects in our school that benefit our children. We ran barbecues at the athletics carnival and cross
country, stalls for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, sold Entertainment Books, and hosted the very popular disco event. We have also
raised significant funds for the school through our School Banking program and our Uniform Shop, which are both run on a recurring
basis through volunteer rosters – both of which need more help in 2020!
I would love to take the opportunity to thank all the volunteers who have helped out on all our exciting things, who have given up
their time, it is very much appreciated. Also thanks to the Committee who helped support the school and me personally as I have
taken on the role of Chair this year. Thank you to Jane and the amazing staff at our school for their leadership, and the extra time
that teachers have spent to undertake additional training, or attend events that our children participate in outside of school hours,
they are always putting our children first. We appreciate you.
As you can see, we have an amazing school and I am so excited to be a part of it all. It has been a fantastic year to see so many students
grow, as well as see all the great work the RPSA has done to help lots of students and support our fantastic school. Our school has
an amazing array of opportunities for our children to be involved in, and as a parent community we are very grateful and appreciative
of what is happening in our school. Reach for the Stars kids, as there is lots of opportunity to get involved.
It will be lovely to see existing members and new faces next year at the RPSA meetings, feel free to bring some fresh ideas that we can
brainstorm and listen to. These meetings are very informative and it’s wonderful as parents to feel knowledgeable about what’s going
on in the school and why, and to be able to have a say in what is happening. All parents and guardians of children in our school are
most welcome.
I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas, and a safe and Happy New Year to all. We look forward to seeing the exciting new
Kinder playground works when we return from holidays in 2020.
