The Sterling Tiger soccer team battled to a 1-1 tie in double- overtime at Estes Park Saturday in a match that did count in the Region 4 standings. Sterling is 5-5-1 overall and 1-0- 1 in the region. Neither team scored in the first half and both goals came in the second half. Sterling’s goal came off the foot of senior Kevin Erisman with senior Jayden Garcia getting the assist. Neither team could score in the first or second overtime periods as the hard-fought match ended in a 1-1 tie. Sophomore Logan Kiefer took 3 shots on goal for Sterling, Erisman and senior Ryan Boyer 2 each and Garcia, senior Bryant Lechman and junior Sam Chaney 1 apiece. Junior goalkeeper Erick Krier had 11 saves at the net. Sterling hosted Estes Park and posted a 2-1 win in a non-region match. The Tigers will travel to Greeley Thursday to take on Frontier Academy at 4 p.m. in Region 4 action in the first meeting of the season between the two squads. Frontier Academy is 7-1-2 overall and 1-0 in the region. On Tuesday the Tigers will host Valley in a Region 4 match. Soccer team ties with Estes Park By Ken McDowell Sports Editor KERSEY It was sweet revenge for the Sterling Lady Tiger volleyball team Tuesday in their Patriot League volleyball match at Platte Valley. Sterling swiftly took care of business, sweeping Platte Valley by scores of 25-23, 25-19, 25-18. On Aug. 28, in only the second match of the season for the Lady Tigers, Platte Valley defeated Sterling in Wally Post Gym in 4 games. The Lady Tigers improve to 10-7 overall and even their record in the Patriot League at 5-5. Platte Valley falls to 10-5 overall and 5-4 in the league. “We played well and needed a big win like this against a good team like Platte Valley,” said Sterling Coach Lisa Schumacher. “We are obviously running our offense better than the first time we played them, so this shows how much we have improved. “We’ve had time to get our offense going and the girls know what they are capable of doing. But we are still trying to get where we need to be.” Sterling’s attack was balanced as seniors Kenzie Chrisman and Shayla Klein had 12 kills each and senior Emily Werner and sophomore Kylie Chavez had 6 each. Senior Kayla Smock led in assists with 18, Chrisman 7, freshman Kyndall Feather 5 and junior Josie Blagg 3. Werner, Feather and Smock each had an ace. Klein had 3 blocks and Chrisman 2. Chrisman led in digs with 15, Klein 12, Feather 11 and Smock and Werner 4 each. On Saturday the Lady Tigers hosted Weld Central in non-league action and won in straight sets, 25- 8, 25-11, 25-15. Chrisman led Sterling in kills with 14, Klein 13, Chavez 7 and Feather and Blagg 2 each. Smock had 14 assists, Feather 10, Chrisman 6 and junior Victoria Lopez 4. Klein had 22 digs, Chavez 20, Feather 17, Chrisman 13 and Fleharty and Werner 7 each. Klein and Werner each served 3 aces and Feather and Smock 2 each. On Thursday the Lady Tigers hosted Eaton, the defending Class 3A state champs and the top- ranked team this year, and fell in 3 sets, 17-25, 21-25, 17-25. On Aug. 30 Sterling lost at Eaton in 3 games, 24-26, 17-25, 20-25. In Thursday’s re-match Chrisman stood tall with 14 kills, Klein 7 and Chavez 4. Smock led in assists with 8, Feather 7 and Chrisman 6. Feather had 13 digs, Klein and Chrisman 10 each, Fleharty 7 and Chavez 6. Klein had 2 blocks and also served 2 aces. The Lady Tigers will host the Valley Lady Vikings Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in Patriot League action. Valley is 13-2 overall and 7-1 in the league, and is ranked second in Class 3A behind Eaton. Sterling is ranked 12th this week. Sterling lost at Valley in 3 games on Sept. 6, 13-25, 23-25, 15-25. On Tuesday Sterling will host University in another big Patriot League contest. University is ranked sixth in the state and swept the Lady Tigers in Greeley on Sept. 4. The Riverview Ladies Golf Association had 7 players on Tues., Sept. 30. The game of the day was Low Gross. Flight winners included: Championship Vickie Heimbegner – 95 and First – Jerri MacIntosh – 110. Nine-Hole Player was Sheila Worley with a score of 60.
