Jose Rizal (1998) movie
The movie Jose Rizal, leaded by Caesar Montano as Dr. Jose Rizal, was a movie for all
Filipinos. For us to have knowledge on what our heroes did for our country. Our teacher
told us to watch the movie last Saturday, October 10, 2015. But I was not able to watch the
movie so I decided to watch it on Youtube instead since Ma’am told us that we can watch it
online. So while watching the movie, I felt so bored at first but I tried to focus on watching
the movie. I got excited on the process. I wonder what will happen next. About the movie,
yes it’s nice. I can understand the language since it’s in Filipino and there was an English
subtitle. The movie started where Rizal was writing a letter to his parents or to his mother,
Teodora. The movie lasted almost two hours. There are some scenes that are boring but
some are not. The video quality of the movie is fine. It looked like it is old which enhanced
the movie since the story was from a long time ago. The movie was all about Rizal fighting
for the Philippines. It was saying what Patriotism is. And we can see from the movie how
Rizal fought along with his co-patriots for the Philippines. We can see how he sacrificed,
how he really love his country that he even risked his life for it.
Dr. Jose Rizal was a noble person. He was a man of incredible intellectual power, with
amazing artistic talent as well. He outshined at anything that he put his mind to - medicine,
poetry, sketching, architecture, sociology. He wrote the two novels that contain the abuse
of the Spanish colony to the Filipinos and the sacrifices the Filipino had. Rizal wrote Noli
Me Tangere in Spanish which was published in 1887 in Berlin. The novel is a mocking
indictment of the Catholic Church and Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines.
This book covered Jose Rizal on the Spanish colonial government's list of menaces. When
Rizal returned home for a visit, he received command from the Governor General, and had
to defend himself from charges of disseminating rebellious ideas.

Although the Spanish governor accepted Rizal's explanations, the Catholic Church was
less willing to forgive. The movie was saying what the real meaning of “Patriotism” was.
The movie focuses on the condition of the society and also to the government at the time of
the Spanish Colonization. With the use of the novels, "Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo" written by himself the Filipinos have been awaken to the reality such as the
abusive ways of the Spaniards towards the Filipino people. It really gave the picture of
abusing and oppression of the Spanish Government and also the Friars. Because of that,
Dr. Jose Rizal finally realized that writing was the best way on how to awake the hearts of
these poor Filipino and that the start of the climax, the start of fighting. Rizal didn't really
stay being blind, mute and deaf in fighting the condition of the Filipino. He also criticized the
Friars in using the religion for abusing the people. The movie had successfully showed
some of the characteristics of the Filipino like being brave and Patriotism especially at the
time of Rizal. But lastly, the most important for him was to give his country the freedom and
justice until the end of his life.
The movie pertains the life of our National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. Describing his youthful life,
his studies, his life when he was striving in the other country, his journey, his life when he
was in Dapitan and finally his life when death was approaching to him.
The focus of the camera is very clear and it helps the scene to be seen clearly. The
pictures on the movie is clear. Obviously, the actions and on how the actors and actresses
move is very truthful in the eyes of the viewers. The setting like mountains or hills, the
farms and the surrounding are also clear. They also carefully used the technologies in
order to give more of the quality of the movie.
We can really see from its whole movie because the story started at the jail. This happened
when his death was approaching. He talked to Atty. Jose Taviel de Andrade. He narrated
his life from being a child until being a grown-up man. He also narrated his love for the
country until to his death. It focuses also to his works in arts but not in every woman who
got involved to him. Obviously, the role of the women before was they don’t have major role
in speaking but on the action that's very essential in delivering the message. Lastly, we can
see here also the works of Jose Rizal such as the two novels mentioned. When the movie
was about to finish, the scene where Rizal was about to die, was really amazing. It

captured my attention. Rizal was really an amazing person. Even to his death, he smiled
with the thought that he died for his country. He maybe was not that happy when he died
but we can see that he is half happy when he smiled facing the sea. When he was shot at
the back that was the most heartbreaking scene of the movie. I really idolize people who
died without regrets. He was a patriot who sacrificed everything for his homeland when no
one can fight. He was really an amazing person but it makes me laugh that he had so
many lovers. He also lost his baby with Josephine Bracken.
