Medical Office Technology 1,080 hours
Practical Nursing minimum of 1,300 hours

CLINICAL NURSING Practical Nursing students will be provided a schedule for clinical
nursing by the Program Coordinator. Clinical nursing involves the
application of learning to provide care for patients. This includes
knowledge of scientific principles, judgment, organization of work,
and development of motor skills. Clinical practice is correlated to the-
ory. A satisfactorily completed comprehensive clinical notebook is
included in the requirements for graduation. It is the responsibility of
the student to “make friends with your notebook,” be aware of clinical
check-offs, and notify the clinical instructor of the need for the check-
off. If the skill check-off is not obtained in the clinical setting, the
student will be required to properly write out the skill, as assigned,
which is to be placed in the clinical notebook.
MAKE-UP WORK Students who miss school must make up their work in order to be suc-
cessful. Students returning from an absence must make-up any work/
tests missed within a reasonable period of time. Strict deadlines may
exist due to the end of a grading period and other program require-
ments. It is the responsibility of the student to request all make-up
assignments, including tests. Failure to do so or to complete them in
the given timeframe will result in a grade of “F” on the assignment(s)
and/or test(s) missed due to such absences.
Practical Nursing students must make up any missed tests the next
class day during break, lunch, or time agreed upon by the instructor.
Any test or assignment not made up on the next class day will result in
a 10% reduction per day until made up, unless the student made other
arrangements with the instructor.
ON-THE-JOB TRAINING SITES Training sites will be revealed to Medical Office students closer to the
time of placement. The training sites will be contacted by the instruc-
tor during the second semester. After the training site agrees to work
with the students, the site will be recommended to the Administrative
Council for approval. A certificate of liability insurance will be avail-
able to any business who wishes to have a copy. Each student will
have an opportunity to be placed at a training site if they are prepared
to go to work. Students who are placed in businesses for on-the-job
training will be evaluated by their on-site supervisor and instructor.
The students will also complete a self-evaluation. The student shall
not contact businesses and place themselves.

ATTENDANCE POLICY FOR
PRACTICAL NURSING Attendance is MANDATORY on clinical or on-the-job training days be-
cause these experiences CANNOT be made up. Instructors will indicate
which days are mandatory in their policies, syllabi, and/or schedules.
Students should personally call the instructor 30 minutes prior to the begin-
ning of the scheduled class or clinical or on-the-job experience if they can-
not attend.
Practical Nursing Students that miss in excess of seven (7) days are dis-
missed from the program. Students will receive a counseling slip when
they have missed three (3) days and the their grades will be reviewed.
Tardiness will not be tolerated. All minutes and hours tardy will accumu-
late and be included in total days missed. When tardy at the beginning of
each class or clinical including returning from lunch:
1 to 15 minutes tardy will count as 15 minutes,
16 minutes to 1 hour will count as 1 hour,
1 hour 1 minute to 2 hours will count as 2 hours, etc.
CLEANLINESS Because medical office and nursing personnel must be in close contact
with patients and must be neither physically offensive nor a source of con-
tamination to patients, a daily bath or shower and use of an underarm de-
odorant are essential.
Moreover, cleanliness is related to one’s self-image. The employee who
feels clean and attractive will generally convey an attractive image. The
employee who has body odor, or obviously shows dirt cannot possibly
maintain the maximum positive relationship with a customer or patient.
Please refrain from using “loud” perfumes, colognes, and hair spray
products because many people suffer from allergies. Please be considerate
of others.

General Policies and Procedures
for ALL Students
Roane-Jackson Technical Center requires all students
to enter and exit school by way of
the main doors in the lobby area.
ALCOHOL AND ILLEGAL DRUGS The use of alcohol and illegal drugs while in the school building and at clinical
and on-the-job training sites will not be tolerated.
ASSEMBLIES-CLUB MEETINGS Prior to a general assembly, all students are to report to their assigned instruc-
tional area. Textbooks and other materials are to be left in this area. Purses
and billfolds may be taken with students to the assembly. Students are respon-
sible for any loss of materials or articles that are left unattended.
BOOK BAGS AND BACK PACKS Book bags and back packs are not permitted at the Roane-Jackson Technical
Center with the exception of the adult programs.
CHEATING POLICY Cheating, copying, sharing of answers, etc., of class work will be considered a
violation of the WV Student Code of Conduct and will be addressed according
to classroom policy.
DRESS AND APPEARANCE Rules and regulations concerning student dress must relate to a specific educa-
tional purpose such as health and/or safety. School authorities may prohibit
dress, which clearly results in disrupting the classroom and the learning proc-
ess, or which constitutes a safety hazard. A student’s dress must allow him/her
to fully participate in all class activities. Some programs require students to
wear uniforms and/or appropriate personal protection equipment. If your
clothes are too revealing, you will be asked to go home and change.
See Policy JCDA Code of Conduct for Student Behavior.
10 304-372-7335
CLOSED CAMPUS Parents and possibly appropriate law enforcement officials will be no-
tified when any student or students leave the campus without permis-
sion. Students may not leave the Center with individuals who are not
listed on their emergency information form.
Identification may be required of anyone who picks up a student from
the Center. Students are required to fill out information listing the
adults that are allowed to sign them out at the beginning of the year.
Anyone NOT on this list will NOT be able to sign out a student.
ILLNESS A student who is too ill to remain in class is to report to the administra-
tive office. At this time, arrangements will be made for the student to
contact parents or be transported to the hospital. Medication cannot be
given to anyone at the Center without a doctor’s order.
MAKE-UP WORK Students who miss school must make up their work in order to fulfill
class obligations. Students returning from an absence must make-up
any work/tests missed within a reasonable period of time. Strict dead-
lines may exist due to the end of a grading period and other program
requirements. It is the responsibility of the student to request all
make-up assignments, including tests. Failure to do so or to com-
plete them in the given timeframe will result in a grade of “F” on the
assignment(s) and/or test(s) missed due to such absences.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Must be enrolled at one of the three local high schools: Ravenswood,
Ripley, or Roane County High School.
Home schooled or private school students are admitted on an individual
basis. Please contact RJTC to receive more information.
ATTENDANCE STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE IN CLASS, CLINICALS OR ON-
THE-JOB TRAINING EVERY DAY. The instructor will keep the official
record of attendance for each student. Attendance is a matter of critical impor-
tance to employers. Poor attendance records in school are a tremendous bar-
rier to successful employment. The guidelines provided herein are less strin-
gent than those required by any employer.
Some programs have attendance requirements in order to continue and com-
plete that program. Do not assume that the maximum absences are days that
you may miss school, because they are “allowed”. Such an attitude will ad-
versely affect your employability and your grades in your classes.
Attendance is MANDATORY on clinical or on-the-job training days because
these experiences CANNOT be made up. Instructors will indicate which days
are mandatory in their policies, syllabi, and/or schedules.
Absences related to school functions will not detract from time earned toward
certification. Should you have any problems associated with absences, consult
your instructor and/or the Assistant Director.
Students with perfect attendance within a month will be entered into a draw-
ing and may win a cash prize to reward their perfect attendance for that
month. Excellent attendance pays off now and in the future!

DRIVING & VEHICLES Secondary students are not permitted to drive a car to the Technical
Center without an approved permission form signed by the parent,
teacher, high school principal, and Technical Center Director.
Secondary students enrolled in Career & Work Skills Training are re-
sponsible for their own transportation to and from their job site.
Adult students are responsible for their own transportation to and from
their classes at the Center, clinicals, and on-the-job training sites.
All students should park in the main (gated) parking lot. The first two
rows of parking spaces are reserved for RJTC faculty and visitors. Stu-
dents should park in the third and fourth rows.
All students must have a Parking Permit which may be purchased from
the secretary in the lobby. The cost of a parking permit is $5.
Automobiles have become one of the greatest methods for transporting
and concealing contraband on school property. Therefore, in exchange
for the privilege of driving a privately owned vehicle to school the STU-
DENT AND PARENT AGREE AND CONSENT TO THE DIREC-
TOR OR HIS/HER DESIGNEE SEARCHING ANY VEHICLE
DRIVEN AT ANY TIME, FOR ANY REASON, WITH OR WITH-
OUT ADVANCE NOTICE TO THE PARENT OR STUDENT.
FREQUENT RANDOM SEARCHES MAY BE CONDUCTED.
EDGE CREDIT “EDGE” is the “Earn a Degree—Graduate Early” program which allows
students who enroll in participating programs and courses to receive
FREE college credit. Talk to your high school counselor, RJTC instruc-
tor, or RJTC’s Assistant Director to determine if your program and
courses are eligible for EDGE credit. Students and teachers must com-
plete appropriate enrollment forms and students must pass the final
exam with a 75% or higher to qualify. EDGE transcripts are generated
for students at no cost. A link can be found on RJTC’s webpage under

FIRE & EVACUATION DRILLS Fire drills at regular intervals are required by law and are an important
safety precaution. It is essential that when the alarm is given everyone
obeys promptly and clears the building by the prescribed route as
quickly as possible. Students are not permitted to talk during a fire
drill and are required to remain outside the building until the signal is
given to return inside.
HOMEWORK Although technical students devote much of their instructional time to
practical laboratory-type work, all technical programs include instruc-
tion in theoretical applications. It will be necessary for students to
complete theory assignments as homework in order to maximize their
time in class for hands-on-training.
LOCKERS All lockers are the property of the Technical Center and are subject to
inspection by any authorized school personnel at any time. The Cen-
ter is not responsible for any stolen items.
PROFANITY The use of profanity will not be tolerated in the school building and at
clinical and on-the-job training sites.
RESPECT FOR EQUIPMENT
AND FACILITIES Each student is expected to assume responsibility for the care of all
school property. Damage of a malicious nature will be considered a
very serious matter and must be repaid and/or replaced at the expense
of the student involved. A pupil, who willfully damages or defaces
any part of the building, equipment, or apparatus, may be suspended
from RJTC until proper restitution is made. 12

without prior approval from the Director, Assistant Director, or
their teacher. All phones should be off or on silent mode.
Telephone calls may be made to the school at (304) 372-7335 be-
tween the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The office is not open on
Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays. Students will be called to the phone
only in extreme emergencies. Personnel will deliver only messages of
an urgent nature to students from the administrative office. Students
may use the office phones only in the case of emergency.
TOBACCO POLICY Tobacco products and electronic vapor cigarettes are prohibited on
school property. Please refer to policy JCDA (Code of Student Con-
duct) and Policy JICG (Tobacco Control Policy) for more informa-
tion.
Adult students will NOT be excused during the morning and after-
noon session to leave the campus in order to smoke. This practice
causes problems with secondary students who are not permitted to do
so and interferes with the instructional process. This policy does not
differ from the policy followed by RJTC employees.
Adults who wish to smoke before school, at lunch, and after school
when secondary students are not present may do so by leaving cam-
pus.
Reminders:
The decision to smoke is a personal matter which is hazardous to
your health.
People do suffer from allergies to tobacco smoke. Please do not
let tobacco odor linger on or become part of your clothing.
Please do not turn in written work that has tobacco odor. The
teacher has the right to deny a grade if your work smells of
smoke.
VISITORS All visitors must sign in at the receptionist desk when entering the
Center. Students are NOT to bring their children to class.

a.m. for the morning session and 12:05 to 2:50 p.m. for the afternoon
session.
Medical Office and Practical Nursing students attend classes be-
tween 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday with a scheduled
lunch break.
Clinical and on-the job training hours for Practical Nursing and
Medical Office students will vary depending on experience and facil-
ity.
Evening courses may be in session until 10 p.m. Monday through
Thursday.
Students are required to be in their educational area at their scheduled
time for each lab/classroom exercise. Students may not leave school
between classes or during a break period without permission from
school personnel. Appointments with the doctor, dentist, etc., should
not be made during school time.
In case this should be necessary for high school students, the student
should bring a note signed by his/her parent/guardian stating the time
it will be necessary for them to leave school, and the reason with the
phone number where the parent may be contacted for verification.

SEVERE WEATHER & SCHOOL CLOSING In case of severe weather – snow, ice, flooding, etc. – the official an-
nouncement for school closing may be heard over the local radio and
TV stations. Students can also sign up for text and email alerts through
local stations or the WV Department of Education at the website http://
wvde.state.wv.us/closings/
For Adult Students:
If Roane and Jackson Counties are both closed, then RJTC will
also be closed. If both counties are on a two-hour delay, then
RJTC will be as well.
In the event the two counties do not agree, RJTC will operate using
the least restrictive option. For example, if one county is closed
while the other is on a two-hour delay, then RJTC will operate on a
two-hour delay.
Students reporting to clinical or on-the-job training sites should
follow the instructions provided by their teachers on when and/or
where to report in the event of delays and/or closures.
STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT All students are expected to behave in a manner that is appropriate
during class, clinical, and on-the-job training experiences. If a student
behaves in a way that distracts themselves or others from learning, the
student may be warned, removed from class, or removed from the pro-
gram. The safety of ALL students will always come first. RJTC’s
Administrative Council adopted Policy JCDA (Code of Student Con-
duct) as guidelines for student behavior which is available on the Cen-
ter’s website.

(e) Assistant Director - The Assistant Director of the school in
which the student is enrolled. RJTC’s Assistant Director serves as the
Title IX Coordinator.
(f) Parties in Interest - Any persons involved in the processing of
the grievance.
(f) Coordinator - The Coordinator of the Practical Nursing Class.
(g) Instructor - The Instructor of the Program in which the student
is enrolled, if not a Practical Nursing student.
Section III - Procedure
Since it is important that a grievance be processed as rapidly as
possible, the number of days indicated at each level shall be consid-
ered as a maximum, and every effort should be made to expedite the
process. The time limit specified may, however, be extended by mu-
tual agreement of the student and the Coordinator or Instructor.
If a grievance is filed which might not be finally resolved under
the time limits set forth herein prior to the end of the school year, and
which left unresolved until the beginning of the following school year,
could result in irreparable harm to a student, the time limit set forth
herein will be reduced to the extent possible so that the grievance pro-
cedure may be concluded prior to the end of the school year, or as
soon as is practical.
No reprisals of any kind shall be taken by the Administrative
Council or by any member of the administration against any student or
any other participant in the grievance procedure by reason of such
participation.
All decisions rendered at all levels of the Grievance Procedure
shall be in writing setting forth the decision and the reasons therefore
and shall be transmitted promptly to all parties in interest.
Forms for filing grievances, taking appeals, and any other neces-
sary documents shall be made available from the Coordinator's or As-
sistant Director’s office to all students upon request so as to facilitate
operations of the grievance procedure.
All meetings and hearings under this procedure shall be conducted
in private and shall include only such parties in interest.
Grievances shall be processed in a manner which does not inter-
fere with the student's work and the normal operation of the school.
In no case may a grievance be altered in content or wording once
it is filed. Anything different from the original grievance would be a
different case and can be accepted only as a different grievance.
Level One: A formal grievance must be lodged by the student
with the student's coordinator or instructor in writing, on the pre-
scribed form and signed by the student. Such grievance shall be
lodged within ten days of the occurrence of the event upon which it is
based. Any discussion with the Coordinator or Instructor concerning
the grievance shall be (1) by the student in his own behalf or (2) by the
student accompanied by a fellow student. 15
