MULTI-STAGE MODULAR PROTECTION

Introduction

Continuous demand for powerful communications solutions has driven developments in electronics, transforming the traditional telephone network. These developments allow greater functionality for telephone users as well as the transmission of high-speed digital data over existing copper telephone lines.

The sensitive components utilised in modern communications equipment are vulnerable to damage from transient overvoltages, caused by lightning and mains disturbances.

Novaris modular protection features high surge handling capability, high bandwidth and low let-through voltage, providing reliable protection for equipment and users.

Applications PSTN DSL Telephone (POTS) DSL Facsimile HDSL Dial-up modem ADSL PABX, Local loop

ISDN Leased line

Operation

Two-stage protection is utilised, providing high energy handling and low let-through. In an overvoltage situation, the first stage, consisting of gas-filled arresters, absorbs the majority of the surge energy. The second stage, containing Novaris’s proprietry clamping network, reduces the let-through voltage to the safest possible level. All circuit elements return automatically to their normal state after the disturbance has passed.

Installation

Single-pair models are supplied with one socket and one free plug. Two-pair models contain a socket on each end, thus will normall require a patch lead to the equipment.

Markings on the label show which way to orient the protector. The “LINE” end must point towards the incoming line; the “EQUIPMENT” end must point towards the equipment to be protected.

Plug the incoming line and the downstream equipment into the corresponding sockets of the protector.

Connect the earth wire to the frame of the equipment to be protected if it is nearby, or to a suitable protective earth.
