a little about our history

k heliski, originally named Radium Hot Springs Glacier Skiing was founded in 1970

by Roger Keith Madson and was incorporated in the spring of 1972. The original

operation utilized a short take-off and landing aircraft based from the airstrip in Radium.

At this time Forster Creek, Horsethief Creek, Glacier Creek and Toby Creek were all

major drainages used for skiing.

In the winter of 1975, a joint partnership was formed with Hans Gmoser of Canadian

Mountain Holidays, called Radium Bugaboo Heli-Skiing. This firm operated out of Radium

Hot Springs utilizing helicopters for transportation until 1979. The partnership then

moved to Panorama Resort and continued to operate as CMH Panorama until 1981.

In 1987, the present Heli-Plex facility was constructed. During this period Radium Hot

Springs Glacier Skiing separated its affiliation with CMH and became Panorama Heli-Ski

and R.K. Heli-Ski Panorama. Currently the operation is marketed as rk heliski.

In the fall 2002 Roger Madson passed away. He was considered local legend and is greatly

missed by the people of the Columbia Valley. His company, rk heliski, was sold to a small

group of investors who, to this day, keep Roger’s legacy alive in the Purcell Mountains.

rk heliski is now a major player in the mechanized ski industry in

South East British Columbia. It staffs 13 full time ski guides as well

as 10 administrative and front end personel. These figures do

not include rk’s Choppers Landing Restaruant and Bar. rkheliski

has operated from mid December to mid April since 1970, it’s

future looks bright and snowy!

some words on safety at rk heliski

Every year as our guests and potential new guests contemplate booking a heli-ski holiday with us the question of safety comes up. It begins with RK only using Guides that are trained and certified by the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) and / or the International Guides Association (IFMGA). Every morning before our guest arrive for their day of heli-skiing / heli-boarding the guides and pilots are busy in the guides’ meeting reviewing snowpack information, weather, snow quality to decide where we feel we can safely take you and show you safe great skiing. We evaluate what every other operation in western Canada has seen also. We use a system called the Infoex. This system is managed by the Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA) which takes the observations from every operation and compiles it together so all subscribers can compare their own observation to that of the whole sector. I will also add a fact you may not know that this same information is the core of what is used by the Canadian Avalanche Centre (CAC) to come up with their Public Forecasts that some of you may use as you go ski touring or snowmobiling in the back country. At the end of everyday there is another guides’ meeting with all the guides and pilots in which we digest the day, evaluating safety, product quality and efficiency so as to do even a better job tomorrow. Yes, this happens every single day.

We are often asked if we do avalanche control. The answer is yes. It is one of the topics that is discussed and decided on at our Guides meetings. When we think conditions are appropriate we use one of our helicopters to drop the explosives to the avalanche start zones we feel could produce an avalanche. By doing this it allows us to bring down avalanches on our terms rather than being surprised.

Another tool we use everyday is “avoidance.” What I mean by that is we have a large area to ski in and maybe at a particular time of the season there is an aspect we are concerned about say southern aspects between 2200m and 2700m in elevation. The answer may be a simple as avoiding that type terrain for a period of time until things settle out.

There are many details about safety that happen every day too many to men-tion here but I will mention one other point. RK is also a member of Helicat

Canada. This is an association of Helicopter and Snowcat skiing operators. We are fellow competitors that have come together to establish a set of minimum standards, guidelines and best practices to safely oper-ate by. The Standards Committee of Helicat Canada, of which I sit on, has established a set of Operational Guidelines to cover all aspects of our sector. As part of being a member, an operation must under go regular reviews of their operation by outside independent reviewers. This process includes a checklist that must be completed to attain the maximum return review which is 5 years. This is part of a process that keeps us op-erationally using and practicing the latest best practices. There is one more point I want to mention to you as to why being a member of Helicat Canada is good for our guests. Besides setting the standards Helicat Canada is also working continually to protect the privilege to go heli-skiing in Canada.
