6"Project description:- Part of the Race to the End of the Earth exhibit by the American Museum of Natural History- Conservation approved exhibitry cases to hold historical artifacts- Project duration: 6 weeks- design, 4 weeks-fabrication- Fabrication Budget: $14K

These two custom cases were designed with the same parameters but on a very different scale. Working with AMNH conservators to determine the proper micro climate, each case meets the rigorous standards that the museum upholds for any piece of exhibitry that holds an accessioned or loaned object. Security and aesthetic concerns were also taken into account.

Project Description

Candlestick Case:Integrated into a label deck, this case allows visitors to get up close to an artifact from the Scott-Amundsen South Pole race. In some ways, it is trickier to present a small object than a large object. If something is small does not mean it does not deserve attention, but it can easily be over-looked. This candlestick holder, made by a member of Scott’s team, is held in a small micro-climate case that is mounted to a handrail. Behind the rail is a diorama of a flock of emperor penguins that were encountered by the English team during their exhibition. To weave this story of bravery, we presented a historical recreation with an object from the original event.

Project Description

Transportation Case:This is one of the largest cases in any travelling AMNH exhibition. At 13’ x 3’ x 7’ high, this case is too large to travel without breaking down. It is a difficult puzzle to build an airtight box that can be taken apart down to its component pieces and re-assembled repeatedly. The aluminum tube frame, and medite and acrylic walls create a secure and steady environment to hold one of the sledges that Robert Falcon Scott took to the South Pole.
