RLC SERIES RESIDENTIAL & LIGHT COMMERCIAL AUTOMATIC CARBON MEDIA FILTERS FOR POTABLE & PROCESS WATERS
CARBON OPTIONS GC1200: A high quality general purpose coconut carbon that works by adsorption of small molecular weight organics from potable water and wastewater. Ideal for dechlorination, de-ozonation and pesticide removal GC1200N: A very high-activity and high-performance coconut carbon. The carbon works by adsorption and BAC*. Highly pre-washed to reduce pH. Ideal for beverage plants, aquaculture and pre-filters for renal dialysis water treatment systems GA1000N: A high quality general purpose coal-based carbon that works via adsorption and BAC*. Pre-washed to adjust pH, ash and floaters. Best suited for the removal/reduction of higher molecular weight organics e.g. tannins, vegetation. Ideal for potable water filtration and wastewater Note: *BAC is biological activity on the carbon surface that further enhances carbon activity
Flow rates are a guide only based on dechlorination using GC1200 carbon. Lower flow rates will be required for chloramines and heavy organics. Refer Dowdens for sizing. Minimum backwash pressure required 175kpa. Max. inlet pressure 600 kpa with no water hammer. For open discharge (e.g. tank filling) use solenoid valve & switch kit option to provide back-pressure when filter is backwashing. Refer Dowdens for information .

RLC SERIES AUTOMATIC RESIDENTIAL & LIGHT COMMERCIAL FILTERS FOR POTABLE & PROCESS WATERS. FEATURING DMI65 MEDIA USING CHLORINE OXIDATION
THE PROCESS
Soluble iron and manganese are oxidised by chlorine and precipitated out of solution. Hydrogen Sulphide is reduced by oxidation to a sulphur precipitate. The filter media is oxidised by dosing a liquid chlorine solution prior to the filter by means of a peristaltic dosing pump. The dosing pump is activated either by a flow switch that starts the pump when flow is detected or it can be wired directly to the water supply pump pressure switch or control box. The precipitates are trapped in the filter bed and removed by backwashing the filter.

AUTOMATIC CONTROL OPTIONS Timer: Feature a 24 hour, 7 day electronic time clock. The backwash duration (minutes), time of day and the backwash days are calculated and set into the timer. Backwash frequency is determined by the filter size and the iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide loading. Volume: Feature a water meter with microprocessor. A volume of water is calculated based on the filter size and the iron, manganese & hydrogen sulphide loading, and entered into the microprocessor. The water meter and microprocessor monitor the water flow and initiate a backwash when the preset volume of water has been attained.
Minimum backwash pressure required 175kpa. Maximum inlet pressure 600 kpa with no water hammer. For open discharge (e.g. tank filling), a solenoid valve and switch kit option will be required to provide back-pressure when filter is backwashing. Refer Dowdens for pricing.

CAUSES OF ACIDIC WATER (1) Carbonic AcidAcid water is prevalent along many coastal areas and is the result of thecarbon produced from rotting vegetation mixing with water to form carbonicacid. Natural rainwater is generally acidic with the degree of acidity beingdependent on the demographics of the region.(2) Reverse Osmosis (RO) SystemsRO units remove minerals from the water but do not remove gas. For example,if excess carbon dioxide (CO2) is in the water supply it will permeate throughthe membrane causing an acid water (low pH) condition in the product water.
PROBLEMS CAUSED BY ACIDIC WATER Acidic water corrodes metal pipes, fittings and water contact appliances and will leach copper from copper pipe causing green/blue staining on fixtures and fittings, pitting and the eventual failure of the piping system. In industry, acidic water or fluids have to be neutralised before disposal or reuse.
NEUTRALISING PROCESS The acid water flows upwards through a bed of alkaline calcite media. The acid dissolves the calcite media adjusting the water to a neutral pH and negating the acidity. The calcite is sacrificial and will require periodic replenishment.
FILTER FEATURES • Uses only inexpensive and safe to use calcite media• When water is flowing, the upflow filter keeps the calcite media in a fluid
state preventing it from packing and channelling• Downstream 5 micron filtration prevents calcite fines and precipitated iron
flowing to service• A large screw-cap top-fill valve to facilitate calcite loading• No power required• No backwashing required• No wasted water• Ideal for tank installations and areas suffering from higher than normal acid- rain conditions

*Guide only. **Lower flow rates may be required for high sediment water. Minimum backwash pressure required 175kpa. Max. inlet pressure 600 kpa with no water hammer. For open discharge (e.g. tank filling), use a switch kit & solenoid valve to provide back-pressure when filter is backwashing. Refer Dowdens for pricing.
MEDIA OPTIONS NEXSAND: Based on a rare natural mineral that is highly processed and refined. The hardness, stability and micro-porous character of nexsand makes it a perfect filtration media for virtually all sediment filter applications. High performance, high capacity sediment and turbidity removal. Filtration 3-5 micron* dependant on flow rate and water quality
GLASS: Crushed, treated glass media. Good quality general purpose media. Does not promote bio-mass growth thereby limiting bacteria proliferation. Filtration to 3-5 micron* dependant on flow rate and water quality
FILTER-AG: Lightweight media with fractured and irregular surfaces for good depth filtration with low backwash require-ment. Ideal for gravity feed systems. Filtration 20-40* micron dependant on flow rate and water quality
AUTOMATIC VALVE Incorporate a 3-cycle valve with a variable timer control that backwash, purge, rinse and return to service at selected intervals e.g. every day, every week. Uses safe 12 volt power from wall mount transformer supplied.
MANUAL VALVE Economical back-washable filters. Simply turn the rotary valve handle to backwash the filter. Complete with backwash flow control and ball valve. Ideal for sites where electric power is not available or for filtering water where minimum backwash waste is required e.g. tank water.
