    MeSSAge FRoM the executive diRectoR:

Thanks to our incredible big-hearted supporters, 2009 was the best year in the history of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation raising nearly $1.5 million to help end family violence. In a year when many charities saw significant declines in fundraising revenues, you came through to help women and children who needed your help. Thank you.

Because of your commitment, families lives will be forever changed, children will be able to sleep through the night, and women at the shelters we support will be safe.

I had the honour of visiting many of the shelters you support this past year and seen smiles on children’s faces who now have a safe haven. I have seen mothers stand tall as they make brave choices for their families. And I have seen the incredible spirit of the staff and volunteers. These critical community organizations are on the front lines literally saving lives. With your support, they continue to keep their doors open and welcome new families who have nowhere else to turn.

Our Foundation has grown by leaps and bounds and we are so thrilled to be able to raise more funds and awareness than ever before. But most of all, we are grateful and humbled by the opportunity to make a significant and lasting difference for Canadian families by supporting women’s shelters and our partners at the Canadian Women’s Foundation and the 4thR Project.

Together, we are working hard to “put abuse out of commission”!

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation I would like to thank everyone at Royal LePage for their incredible ongoing support. This past year we reached an exciting milestone announcing that we have raised more than $10 million since 1999 to help Canadian women and children.

As a result of your generous commission donations, special events and volunteer contributions we have grown to become Canada’s largest public foundation dedicated exclusively to funding women’s shelters and violence prevention programs. Thank you for making 2009 our most successful fundraising year yet.

We look forward to continuing this momentum and welcoming even more Royal LePage REALTORS® as supporters of our work.

“Helping You Is What We Do” is not just a collection of words that sits beneath our logo. Royal LePage agents, brokers and staff care deeply about giving back to the community. As Canada’s only real estate company with our own charity, we have a long history of philanthropy and working to make a difference in the communities where we live and work.

We are so proud of every Royal LePager from coast to coast for helping raise record funds in 2009. Thank you for your generosity, hard work and leadership in all that you do to support the Shelter Foundation. From the extraordinary National Garage Sale for Shelter, to the commission donations you make in honour of your clients, to the 50,000 Royal LePage red Shelter Blooms tulips you plant across the country - you are showing Canada how committed we are to creating safer homes and safer communities.

Thank you also to our generous business partners who often step up as event sponsors and donors to the Shelter Foundation making so many of our fundraisers possible. Because of your commitment to our cause we can provide shelter and a new beginning for those who need it most.

Royal LePage is Canada’s leading provider of franchise services to residential real estate brokerages, with a network of 14,000 real estate professionals in over 600 locations across Canada. We are proud to also be a leader in giving back thanks to the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation.

Statistics tell us that 50% of Canadian women have experienced abuse and 360,000 children witness domestic violence each year. Women’s shelters provide a safe haven for those who need it most.

“I don’t recognize myself! I am different from the woman who came through those doors. I appreciate all that you have done for me! I am more confident and now I can go and live and I know that I am not going to be the beaten down woman that came to the Women’s Shelter some months ago.”

    - Amanda, resident of YWCA Arise Shelter

“There is something absolutely heart warming about people, and agencies that get involved just because it is the right thing to do. Having been aware of the work that happens at our local Royal LePage office, I know how much time and effort (as well as $$$) are given by Royal LePage employees. It truly makes such a difference in the level of quality we provide to our families. THANK YOU!”

    - Kerri Potvin, C.Y.C. Harbour House Manager YWCA Lethbridge & District

Commission donations stay locally to help women and children in our communities and fund a variety of programs in shelters. Examples of programs our agents have funded at local shelters that are making a big difference include: - art therapy programs for children - peaceful gardens for women and their children to enjoy and have a safe and secure outside space- training and job search programs- peer counseling programs- … and funding the cost of food, housing, therapy, childcare and support

“What would The Redwood do without the dedicated team at the Royal LePage office? Our local agents have raised over $100,000 to help The Redwood give women and children a lifeline out of abuse. Thanks to your generous support, families are getting the emotional, practical and social support they need to get their lives back on track, including programs that help children and youth rebuild their self-esteem, and break the cycle of violence through art and play therapy, counseling, and after-school school tutoring.

A huge thank you to everyone who is helping create safer homes and communities by supporting the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation.” -Anne-Marie Gardner, Executive Director, The Redwood

“The Royal LePage Shelter Foundation is by far our biggest donor. The financial support that we receive from you is invaluable to our ability to continue to provide programming and support to women and their children who are rebuilding their lives in the wake of abuse. Thank you again for the work that you do in aid of Margaret Laurence House and in aid of the other shelters who also benefit from your time, energy and passion for supporting women in transition from abuse.”

~Melanie Smart, Managing Counselor, Margaret Laurence House

“What once was a dream of hope and peace is now our reality. This is an accomplishment that I am very proud of and I would not be where I am today without the shelter. For women like me who for so long lived in isolation it is deeply moving to see all the people that care. Thank you for being here and to every Royal LePage agent across Canada who donates to the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation and volunteers at their local shelter. Thank you for supporting the programs that saved my life.”

She wears long sleeves in the summer heatDoesn’t make eye contact with people she meetsShe keeps to herself, rarely ventures outsideHer curtains are closed, she has something to hide. She may be a neighborhood child you watched growBut trust me on this, she is someone you know.

She wears dark glasses and collars up highWhen she’s alone she feels safest to cry.She feels so lost and completely aloneHer prison surrounds her, her prison is home. She may be the big sister who helped you to growBut trust me on this, she is someone you know.

She wraps her arms around herself tightBarely whispers her words and won’t sleep at night. She cringes and jumps and seems scattered at bestHer body, her soul are never at rest. She may be the daughter with pride you watched growBut trust me on this, she is someone you know.

She stands beside you in the grocery store lineShe serves you your meals and pours you your wine. She delivers your mail, she alters your clothesShe cuts your hair and she paints your toes. She drives your bus, she plows your snow,But trust me on this, she is someone you know.

You notice the signs, see the look in her eyesYou hear her small voice and the muffled criesYou smile as you push up the sleeves on her shirtYou promise you’ll help her to end all the hurtYou hold her gently and you don’t let her goFor trust me on this, she is someone you know.

    The FourTh r

To break the cycle of abuse and make a lasting difference, the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation believes strongly in education and prevention work across the country. We are a major partner and founding donor in the Fourth R Project. The curriculum based project engages high school students in over 1000 schools across Canada to better understand what a healthy and safe relationship looks like. More than 50,000 youth benefited from the program in 2009.

“Working in partnership with the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation has allowed the Fourth R program to expand across the country. First through the generous $1 million donation made, and currently through individual office fundraising, the Fourth R curriculum is in over 1000 schools in all Canadian provinces. The Royal LePage Shelter Foundation and agents working collectively across the country has allowed hundreds of thousands of children to learn about healthy relationships at a young age to put an end to violence against women and children. The support received from the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation and Royal LePage agents is appreciated by children, teachers, parents and communities Canada-wide.”

We work hard to prevent domestic violence by providing grants to innovative grassroots work in every province across the country with the Canadian Women’s Foundation. In 2009, the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation contributed $253,635 to help fund programs for girls and teens as well as ground-breaking work to help women rebuild their lives after living with violence.

“Canadian Women’s Foundation is proud to partner with the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation. Together we are supporting shelters for women and children fleeing abuse, programs to help women and their children rebuild their lives after abuse, and education programs to prevent abuse in the first place. And we are doing this in local communities all across Canada. Royal LePage brokers, agents, employees and management, through their support of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation and our partnership, are outstanding business leaders on this issue in Canada.”

“I learnt early that the essence of who I am and what makes me happy is what I can do for others. I want to make a difference in the world where I live. And then there is the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation – I didn’t go looking for it - IT found me. When you actually realize that you have something so awesome within your organization it’s really quite incredible. But if you have to stop first … and then pay attention to what our Foundation is all about and what we are accomplishing. If you don’t take that time to let the information sink in then you are missing an incredible opportunity. We have a company that has a vision and a way for each one of us help make a difference where we live and work in helping women and children in crisis. One day I did stop and pay attention and that was the beginning of my growing passion in trying to do my part in helping make a difference. People are like sticks of dynamite…. The power’s on the inside. But nothing happens until the fuse gets lit. The Royal LePage Shelter Foundation and everything that it does to help women and children in horrifying life threatening situations lit my fuse. I hope you will stop and take a moment so that it will light yours as well.”

Our office already supported Armagh House, a 2nd stage Shelter for abused women, and so we are now able to support both Peel Family and Armagh House in a mighty way. I wrote down a goal to raise a certain amount of money without knowing how, except that I was going to use social media. What drove me was the hope of being able to help abused women and children escape violence. I think of my own wife and children, and want others to enjoy the same peace and security that they have. The shelters not only serve as a safe haven, but as a sanctuary where women are able to regain a sense of self and confidence in a supportive and self-enabling environment in preparation for a return to lives free from violence. “It’s luxury for us as Realtors to be aligned with a company that has the social conscience and reach to make the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation a reality. I cannot think of a more compelling cause for me as an Agent than that of ensuring that women and their children have a safe place to go where they can begin again.”

“I think we all need to help each other in times of need and crisis. As individuals we don’t always hear of the needs of others in time to do anything to help. That is why it is so important to have shelters in place so when there is a sudden need, the hurting have some where safe to go. That takes planning and money. Collectively, we can and do make a difference. And it feels good to give.”

    James WriGhT

“As someone who is fortunate enough to sell shelter to clients and their families, I feel that giving to the RLP Shelter Foundation it is my way of giving back to the families who are less fortunate than my clients and myself.”

    elli davis

“I feel a great sense of pride that I have helped women and children in their most difficult time and I am so grateful I have been able to help. Every transaction I complete is for my “partner” as there is an automatic donation through Royal LePage which keeps it easy and “painless”. The more successful I am, the more the Shelter Foundation benefits and I love to share in success!”

“The RLP Shelter Foundation provides hope and it’s an honour for me to be able to support a cause that brings comfort and security to families that are searching for a better place to be in life.”

“I was delighted when Royal Lepage established the Shelter Foundation. It is easy to support a charity with a definite mission and with subsequent quantifiable success. The Foundation has helped to effect change in the lives of its client population. In particular, I have seen the wonderful work of Interval House in our community. I particularly appreciate the fact that any intervention is not just a temporary measure but extends to aiding in re-establishing the client in her community”.

“The woman’s shelter saved mine and my daughter’s lives. I believe that statement sums up how much the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation means to me. It is the reason I chose Royal LePage as brokerage over all of the others. The more I learned about what a wonderful charity it is, the more it solidified for me the excellent choice I made. I want to be a part of something that can potentially help others to rise above family violence and triumph in their lives as I have done.” -DarlisBachusky,Donor&AgentofChangeVolunteer
