W omen change their fashions

regularly, so why shouldn’t

they do the same with their

jewelry? there’s a reason why second-

hand shops thrive even in areas where

money isn’t the driving force behind

those trash bags of unwanted clothes.

It turns out that many retail jewelers

are ready and able to take in used and

unwanted jewelry, either for resale, con-

signment, or repurposing. It may be a

ring that the customer no longer wears,

or an inherited necklace that doesn’t

match the new owner’s taste. regard-

less, retailers who take in vintage pieces

find it’s a surefire way to stand out from

their more traditional competitors. Not

only does it let them add unique pieces

to their showcases, it also creates stron-

ger connections with customers, who

can move on to something that better

suits their tastes—which often means a

new piece from that same retailer.

there’s no one way to approach the

sale of vintage jewelry. But if you do it

right, vintage pieces have the potential

to become a significant part of your

business. Here’s how two retailers who

have found “vintage success” handle it

in their stores.

KrOMbhOlz JEWElErs:

helping Customers Trade Up

s elling vintage jewelry is a natural

fit for custom jewelers: Both vin-

tage and custom address custom-

ers’ desire for something matching their

individual personalities and styles. Just ask

lee Krombholz, the third-generation owner

of Krombholz Jewelers in Cincinnati. Kromb-

holz Jewelers specializes in custom design,

and the store draws customers (from a

30-mile radius) who want something dis-

tinctive. Its vintage jewelry selection helps

to fulfill that desire.

Krombholz says that although custom

design still makes up half of his store’s busi-

ness, vintage jewelry sales have grown 10

to 15 percent annually over the past few

years, and they now account for 25 per-

cent of the store’s overall revenue. Some

of his antique and estate pieces he buys

from dealers, enabling him to keep a broad

range of inventory and target needed

items. However, the majority of the store’s

vintage stock comes from its consign-

ments—everyday jewelry of little antique

value, but by no means undesirable.

“a lot of our consignment comes from

existing clients who really like jewelry,”

Krombholz explains. “they just want to

buy something different, and this [con-

signment] enables them to get the cash to

make that change.” Sometimes a piece

may sell quickly, in a week or so; other

times it may not sell for a year. Either way,

the customer stands to receive a 50/50

split—which is about 25 to 40 percent

more than if Krombholz were to buy it

outright (when he would be offering only

the scrap value of the piece). Often, that

additional money goes toward a new cus-

tom piece designed by Krombholz.

the staff evaluates each piece brought

in for consignment according to certain

standards, such as the intrinsic value of its

gem and metal weight, its durability, how

well it was originally made, and whether

it’s aesthetically pleasing (a subjective

standard, Krombholz admits: “We try not

to be too judgmental”).

“If a piece doesn’t meet our standards,

we will make an offer for its intrinsic

value,” Krombholz says. If it does, then

they’ll arrive at a price in consultation with

the consigning client. “We’ll listen to what

the client thinks it’s worth,” he explains,

“but we also might compare it to similar

items, so we can list it at a reasonable

price.” If it’s a signed piece, he and the staff

will look up websites that specialize in such

items (such as rubylane.com, which Kromb-

holz describes as “an eBay just for antiques”).

and sometimes they’ll simply look at a

piece and, based on their experience and

customer knowledge, think, “What should

it be worth?”

they will also do whatever repairs are

needed before displaying a piece. Kromb-

holz says, “We will not put something in

the case until it is in good shape. If we

know the client, and we need to repolish a

stone to make the piece salable, we will

subtract that from the price they receive

at the end.”

Once a piece is ready for the showcase,

Krombholz remains sensitive to the con-

signor’s wishes and expectations, espe-

cially since he or she is usually a frequent

customer. Sometimes, whether because of

the jewelry’s emotional connection or the

fear of public judgment, he’ll get a request

for a piece not to be put in a display case;

in those instances, he’ll sell the jewelry to

dealers or take it apart for scrap. He will

also lay out for the customers exactly what

to expect. “We’re very up-front with peo-

ple about how we’re going to tag a piece,

how much they’ll net, and when we pay

them. We don’t want people to think we’re

doing anything shady.”

He’s also learned a few things about

the process. “We’ve had antique jewelry

for 50 years, and we always segregated

them to a separate case—I thought it was

taboo to put them with modern jewelry,”

he says. “Four years ago we started blend-

ing them. a case might have both antique

and modern colored-stone rings—and our

customers didn’t really care. It surprised

me. We were very clear if something was

old or new, but most people went between

the two without thinking about it. If

something appealed to them, it appealed

to them.”

Telling a story

“We sell ‘interesting,’” is how

Cynthia gurin explains the

philosophy behind treasure

Coast Jewelers in Stuart, Florida. the store

specializes in vintage jewelry on consign-

ment—and when someone brought in a

vintage pendant that featured an accor-

dion-playing frog, she knew it would fit

right in with her merchandise.

gurin shares her showroom space with

John David Cooney, a custom designer,

platinumsmith, and goldsmith with 43

years’ experience. When she showed the

pendant to him, Cooney just rolled his

eyes. “this is such a dog,” he sighed.

But gurin knew. “I loved it. It was a

delightful bit of whimsy. I can look at some-

thing and know my clientele will respond

to it—I just know. John will look at some-

thing and say, ‘WHAT?!’ but I’ll just tell him,

‘trust me. It’s wonderful. I can sell this.’”

and, like the frog pendant, it does sell—

and not just because gurin has an extraor-

dinary sense of her customers’ tastes

(although that helps). She also works hard

to tell the story behind a piece, to bring

out its romance and history. the frog pen-

dant illustrates this well. It contained a

tag imprinted with “C. Madsen,” which she

soon learned was Christian Madsen, a top

designer for Harry Winston from the 1930s

to the 1960s. She then, as she puts it,

“researched the daylights out of it.”

“I’m very good at online research,” she

says, noting ancestry.com, Polygon.net,

and the sites for both Sotheby’s and Chris-

tie’s as particularly helpful. “I found pic-

tures of [Madsen], traced his ancestry,

determined when he came to the united

States, and confirmed he had been work-

ing for Harry Winston.”

When the client who inherited the pen-

dant said he remembered his mother men-

tioning a magazine article that featured a

photo of Christian Madsen in the 1950s,

gurin searched for and eventually found

that 1953 issue of Life magazine. gurin

then compiled all of that research—as well

as a few “fun facts” about frogs and some

images of clothing that would work well

with the piece—and created a sales page

on her website, treasurecoastjewelers.com.

“I do my homework on every piece,”

gurin says. and that homework, along

with her ability to tell a story (“I’m a sci-

ence fiction/fantasy novelist when I’m not

selling jewelry,” she notes), have been key

components to her success.

Her location—along Florida’s famed

“treasure Coast” north of Palm Beach—

also helps, particularly with supply: Estate

jewelry comes to gurin from the many

retired people who have moved into the

region. “they often sell off pieces they

don’t want before they come here,” she

says, ”but once they’re here for a while,

they realize their children don’t want the

remaining pieces of jewelry and they ask

us to sell them.”

Perhaps because of the particular clien-

tele in her region, she says she gets intrigu-

ing pieces all the time (as shown by the

Harry Winston pendant), and they often

have a substantial value. Consignment

To help market a vintage pendant by noted jewelry designer Christian Madsen, Gurin developed a web page that included historical research on Madsen as well as a selection of clothing that complemented the pendant. “I do my homework on every piece,” Gurin says.

allows her to take in a variety of these pieces

(when buying them might not be econom-

ically feasible), and she offers the consignor

a generous 70 percent of the sale price.

However, although most pieces she

receives are in good condition, gurin esti-

mates that she turns down 80 percent of

what’s brought to her. the pieces that do

make the cut not only exhibit high quality,

but also have that “interesting” aspect that

she prefers. “My clients are not interested

in jewelry that can be found in every chain

store in the mall,” she says. and that exclu-

sivity not only becomes a selling point, but

also leads to some of her best marketing.

“We used to do a whole lot of joint

advertising, and we also made generous

donations of fine jewelry to various chari-

ties, but we didn’t really get the right

return on our investment,” gurin remem-

bers. “at this point, almost all of our busi-

ness is word of mouth—just yesterday,

someone came into the store because she

saw our earrings on a neighbor and asked,

‘Where did you get them?’ Because we

specialize in interesting pieces, people are

always asking that question.” and the

answer typically leads to fairly steady year-

round traffic, both in-store and online (her

sales are divided fairly evenly between the

two, she says).

Her business relationship with Cooney

offers another advantage: For the pieces

that she gracefully declines to take on con-

signment (or that simply aren’t selling),

she’s able to suggest tactfully that the

owner consider having them redesigned.

“I can say, ‘you know, if you never wear this,

John can turn it into an entirely new piece

of jewelry.’ that happens all the time—

redesigning and repurposing now accounts

for about 30 percent of John’s custom work.”

In either case, it all comes down to

“interesting” and uniqueness—qualities

epitomized by vintage jewelry. and those

qualities do lead to sales, as long as you

have a bit of patience.

“It’s a bit like selling a house,” gurin says.

“I was a realtor and an appraiser of luxury

real estate properties for many years

before eventually turning an avocation

into a vocation. I’ve found that selling vin-

tage jewelry is very much like real estate: It

depends on getting the right piece of jew-

elry in front of the right buyer.” as gurin is

quick to note, there is a buyer out there for

every piece of vintage jewelry. It’s just a

matter of understanding your market,

making sure that old piece looks as good

as new—and telling a good story. u
