A native of New York state, Don first came to RLT in the summer of 1973 when he did the program for the RLT production of “The Hobbit” at the old Maple Street location. In the fall of 1974 he was cast in his first lead- ing role at RLT as Paul in “A Shot in the Dark” the first time RLT did that show. The first show he directed at RLT was “Arsenic and Old Lace” in 1975. Overall, he has directed 35 plays, musicals, and follies, 29 of them being at RLT including 18 musi- cals and one Junior Service League Fol- lies held at the DeSoto. I asked Don what kinds of problems he had with this production. Most of you know that origi- nally RLT had se- lected Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” to be done in this slot, but the rights were pulled by R & H Theat- ricals because a production of that script opened on Broadway this spring (for the first time!--three productions have been on televi- sion, but this is the first time it has appeared on Broadway.) So the Board had to change the plan for the season and for this director, and assigned “The Wizard of Oz” to him instead. Then the Board had to change the original dates of the show to two weeks sooner due to school schedules and the dates of the CRCT tests. So Don began to face this challenge with two strikes against him already! But, he has risen to the challenge and now his third chal- lenge, but not a strike, is the sheer number of his cast - 71! Problems are magnified when you have more people involved, such as actors missing rehearsals due to conflicts, the weather or illness, and then having to catch them up. In addition, one of the original leads had to be re- placed because she got a new job out of town and could no longer partici- pate in the show, but even this obstacle has been overcome, and Don says his greatest joy has been working with this wonderful, cooperative cast, and especially his first-time-but-outstanding, highly organized produc- er, Allison Cox Dolbeer. Also assisting Don in this production is the mu- sical director and conduc- tor, returning to RLT once again, Bill King. Bill was the musical director and conductor the last time RLT did this show - in 1993. Usual Musical Di- rector and Conductor James Willis is taking a bit of a break from his duties, but is still going to be playing keyboards in the pit for the show, and is doing some musical rehearsals, along with regular rehearsal pianist Donna Hester. Alisha Abrams is the choreogra- pher, and Don is especially excited about in- cluding the original dance number, “The Jitterbug,” which was filmed but cut from the original movie (to make the entire movie short- er, only 1 hour and 40 minutes long.) He is also excited to see some of the special effects re- quired by the script that he and the cast and crew have come up with, such as the melting of the Wicked Witch of the West and the appear- ance of Aunt Em in the witch’s crystal ball. and coming up soon is the AtlantaOpera production of one of the

funniest operas I have ever seen, Rossini’s “L’italiana di Algeri”(or “The Italian Girl in Algiers”) April 27th and 30th and May 3rdand 5th. This will be sung in Italian with English Operatitles.Atlanta Ballet will close out their season May 10th-12th with “LoveStories.” More information about these amazing productions canbe found at http://www.cobbenergycentre.org. Going east, the fabulous Aurora Theatre in downtownLawrenceville is presenting the funniest musical I ever saw onBroadway, the hilarious “The Drowsy Chaperone,” now throughApril 14th. The play is the story of a man who puts his favoritecast album LP on his turntable and suddenly the musical burststo life in his living room! You do not want to miss this mostentertaining show! They will close their season with “Lark Eden,”a new humorous play set in the smallest of Georgia’s towns thattraces the lives of three life-long friends. “Lark Eden will run May2nd-26th. For more information on these shows, go tohttp://www.auroratheatre.com. Remember that you can find outabout even more opportunities in the metropolitan Atlanta area athttp://www.atlantaperforms.com, and even snag some discounttickets through their Atlantix program! Going a little further into northeast Georgia and just a little overtwo hours away, the Holly Theater in Dahlonega is back inoperation with a full season, and first up is Lerner and Lowe’smagical and romantic musical fantasy, “Brigadoon,” which will runApril 5th-21st. They have an exciting season lined up. Theirwebsite is http://www.hollytheater.com, and don’t forget to spell“theater” this way instead of the usual British way! The Gainesville Theatre Alliance in northeast Georgia isgearing up for their final production at the Ed Cabell Theatre onthe UNG-Gainesville campus in Oakwood, Shakespeare’s“Twelfth Night,” April 9th-20th. The company will also be on theroad presenting the breakneck small cast (and hysterical!)version of “Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps” at the new Sylvia Beard

Theatre in Buford April 5th-14th. Tickets and information aboutboth of these shows are available athttp://www.gainesvilletheatrealliance.org. And as always my tour of “Beyond the RLT” would not becomplete without a shout out to two of our favorite out of statevenues. The first is the Greenville Little Theatre, and although wespent a night in that beautiful city this month, unfortunately therewas not any theatre onstage anywhere in town! (But we did see aglorious production of “Oliver!” in Virginia Beach the next day!)The final show of the GLT season is a comedy set in 1970 called“Elvis Has Left the Building,” which is about Col. Tom Parker’ssearch for the King for a very important concert. This show willrun April 5th-20th (seems like I’ve heard these dates beforesomewhere! :)) Their annual summer musical this year will beIrving Berlin’s best, “Annie Get Your Gun,” which will openMemorial Day weekend. I’ll cover that in the next newsletter, butyou can go to http://www.greenvillelittletheatre.org for tickets andmore information. Which brings us to the exciting news at our favorite weekendgetaway, the Cumberland County Playhouse in Crossville, TN, amere 3 ½ hours away. It’s a great long weekend place to go,where you can possible squeeze in as many as four differentshows in two days! Currently running at CCP are: their openingproduction of “Steel Magnolias,” now through March 29th and“Les Miserables” now through May 3rd. Opening April 5th andrunning through May 17th is William Gibson’s classic dramaabout Helen Keller’s early education, “The Miracle Worker.” Andbefore the next newsletter, they will open Dolly Parton’sBroadway hit, “9 to 5, the Musical” running through July 14th.May 24th-August 2nd will see their 20th anniversary production ofthe hit musical, “Smoke on the Mountain.” Plan a theatreweekend at http://www.ccplayhouse.com. So that’s a little taste of what lies beyond Emerald City, Kansasand RLT! Thanks for supporting live theatre at RLT, and Beyond!

(Continued from page 3)

You’ll have to come see the show tobe amazed by how these work!

As usual, many family groups are participating at RLT, one of thestrengths of our community theatre. Obviously, many parents get in-volved when so many children are cast, and these parents have been ablessing not only transporting their actors to rehearsal, but also workingbackstage and even coming up with props! Three of the leads, the Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow, also have children in the production, and there isanother mother-daughter pair. There are at least two sets of sisters. And onefamily has three generations in the cast! Don is also looking forward to the four sold-out school shows, which will beshortened only by a narration of the first scenes but will still include Dorothy’siconic song, “Over the Rainbow.” And he wanted to remind the audiences that notonly have the dates been changed, but so have the regular RLT performancesdue to opening on Easter weekend: there will be a matinee and an evening per-formance on Saturday, March 30th and no Sunday matinee on Easter Sunday,March 31st. The regular Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday matinee per-formances will be held the second weekend, April 5th-7th. I asked Don what he thinks the moral of the story is, and what he would like forthe audiences to take away from the viewing of the show. He said he thinks that itis summed up in Dorothy’s last line, “There’s no place like home,” meaning ofcourse that it is important for children to realize that parents are disciplining andteaching their children out of love and not to create conflict or pressure on them.Speaking from experience as someone who has directed this show before (Dar-lington School in 2006), I agree with Don’s assessment of this timeless story giv-ing us life lessons we will never forget. You are sure to say “Ahhh…” after youhave traveled with the RLT company to Don’s interpretation of “…Oz!” «
