Michael Waltrip wins the Daytona 500. What are you up to these days? I still do some work for the Rockies, like Fantasy Camp, Client Batting Practice and things like that. That’s pretty much it. You were born and raised in Los Angeles, so what was it like going to college at Lewis-Clark State College in Idaho? It was great. I had a couple opportunities, went up there on a recruit- ing trip and it was awesome. It’s a beautiful part of the state, Lewis- ton, Idaho. It was a little bit of culture shock from where I grew up, but it’s a small town and I think I needed to get out of L.A. So it was nice to get to a smaller town of 35,000 people and the baseball was great. Plus, I ended up meeting my wife there and 27 years later, here we are. Tell us about your family. My wife is Terry. My older son is Dylan, a 19-year-old student at Colorado State University, and my youngest son, Logan, is a sophomore at Ralston Valley High School. We’ve lived here in Colorado for 20 years. Do you have any pets? We have two pets: a Portuguese Water Dog and a Yellow Lab. What’s your favorite food? Steak, potatoes and corn on the cob What’s your favorite junk food? Peanut M&M’s Least favorite food? Squash How about your first job? I had a paper route way back in the day. Worst job? Moving drywall What was your first car? 1969 Volkswagen Bug Your first concert? The Police Since you were a member of the inaugural Rockies team, let’s look back. Which of these albums was the best of 1993: What was your favorite 1993 TV show? “Seinfeld,” but “Home Improvement” was right there with it. What was your favorite city to play in besides Denver? San Diego Who is the funniest teammate you ever had? Dave Burba Who is your best friend from your playing days, someone you always keep in touch with? Bruce Ruffin What is your best memory as a player? I’d say Opening Day ’93 was big, but also when we clinched the Wild Card in ’95—that was special. And finally, how do you look back at that inaugural season? It was a storybook year. It was exciting with 75,000 people every night and it was one of those years that will never happen again. It’s pretty awe- some to be on the first team ever and be part of something like that. It was great to see the community and the whole state of Colorado get on board with the Rockies. Time goes quickly.
