Littleton Eagles Plus - Future’s so Bright with Pride and Passion

Since the latter part of the 1970s, Littleton rugby fortunes have manifested sporadically in clubs, both youth

and adult, which have flourished for a time and then either merged with another rugby

entity or gone away entirely… welcome the 21st century, Charlie Riley and support

staff: Ethan Pougnet, Cody Melphy and Jesus Flores. For these formidable Colorado

rugby spirits have brought our game to the southern Denver suburb in large and

substantial fashion.

Since 2011 and the resurgence of high school rugby with Littleton Eagles RC, a

Colorado high school Division-1 club, the Sport of Royalty has returned to town in a big

way and by all accounts, it is here to stay.

Littleton’s engagement in Colorado High School rugby had been intermittent before

the arrival of head coach, Charlie Riley, three years past. Mr. Riley, an area builder

who runs a company in the roofing trade, and able assistant, Ethan Pougnet, have enabled and empowered

their charges to participate in rugby at age-grade level, but more importantly, the pair have inspired members

of the side to greater heights beyond high school.

A telling sign of age-grade level club’s impact on its

members is how their alumni fares in the greater

rugby world post-departure. Littleton Eagles alum

Kurt Werner is a full-ride rugby scholarship recipient

at American International College and is finishing his

sophomore year at the western Massachusetts

institution where he is not just making grades in the

classroom, but on the pitch as well. Werner was

invited to U-20 Eagles camp this year and due his

performance at those trials, he is well in the mix for a

shot at both of America’s representative national

men’s sides: 7s and 15s. Young Werner has

substantial rugby roots as brother Ryan earned a berth

as a starter on Colorado High School Rugby Selects,

and father, Russ, featured in the dangerous three-quartersline for Denver Harlequins back in the day and you

can yet catch Werner-the-Elder on the pitch in action if you’re swift and savvy enough with Colorado Senior

Olde Boys (CSOBs) or in Harlequins friendlies.

Another testament to a high school rugby program’s effect is the number and value of its former members

who exercise their right of return to the club as coaches and administrators. Cody Melphy and Jesus Flores are

two such individuals. Says Flores, a formidable blindside flanker and also crafty #2: “I started rugby (after)

overhearing guys in the hall (at school) talking about practice, so I showed up, started learning and studied the

game 24/7. I am excited about coaching because I get to grow the game and help people learn about the

game I fell in love with.” Adds Melphy: “I love playing and hop in on any game presented to me. I’m lucky to

have gotten all the opportunities that I have, and am very excited about starting a new club in Littleton.”

Regards his rugby future, Melphy enthuses, “My … future is always changing but the main focus is to keep

getting to the next level… I am rugby strong and will always be!”

Littleton Eagles home pitch is at Heritage High School, a Colorado secondary school nestled in the suburbs on

Denver’s southern edge between Santa Fe and Broadway. The town has seen a number of rugby start-ups,

most notably Littleton Rugby Club that acquitted itself well and formidably before merging with Denver

Harlequins organization in the 1980s.

Riley played his college ball at University of Colorado with the Buffs where his side contended for USA Rugby’s

first-division college national championship. Charlie, whose pride and passion for our sport are evident in his

speech and subsequent action, played for a number of men’s clubs after graduating CU and prior to his taking

up the instructor’s mantle at Littleton.

And perhaps as the greatest indicator of the

Littleton High School program’s worth;

Messrs. Pougnet, Flores and Melphy have

laid the groundwork for bringing men’s club

rugby back to the Littleton area. Littleton

Rugby Club will play its first match, after

more than a three-decade respite this fall,

and it is Pougnet’s intention that the (re)-

startup club will have its administration

organized and union requirements fulfilled in

time for the club to engage in 7-a-side action

this summer session.

A stretch one might think, but consider

this: Ethan Pougnet will spend near two

months upcoming the summer on the east coast of South Africa with a little organization that you may have

heard of before: Natal Sharks. Yep, we’re talking the big fish that frolic the Super Rugby XV pond and its inland

reaches throughout the Southern Hemisphere. Mr. Pougnet will spend a portion of his summer at Sharks

Academy, learning coaching structures and techniques from some of the finest, forward-thinking rugby

instructors on the planet. And then he’ll bring that rugby treasure trove home with him for Littleton’s benefit.

Riley’s high school program recruits and trains players from Arapahoe, Englewood, Heritage and Littleton High

Schools in the way of rugby. Coach Riley reports: “At first, the high school athletic directors were wary of our

sport, but things are changing for the better all the time!”

The 15s season begins after Holiday break in January. Seven-a-side play overlaps 15s somewhat and runs

through the summer months.

Information on Littleton’s high school or men’s rugby programs may be gotten by contacting:

Charlie Riley: 720.270.5600; [email protected];

Ethan Pougnet: 303.956.1232; [email protected]

ed: Coach Riley is not just involved in altruistic activity in our area, he and his family have recently returned

from vacation in Mesoamerica where they spent their time installing critically-needed housing and utilitarian

infrastructure at a rural community in Nicaragua.

Pacific Rugby Premiership: Denver Barbarians v Glendale Raptors

In the much-anticipated test between the elite

Colorado men’s rugby sides, Barbarians and

Raptors battled the full-80 under possibly the finest

rugby viewing conditions ever. Jarring tackles,

crafty kicks, swift lengthy slings and short offloads,

and the big shoulder charge were the order of the

day for each team as Infinity’s Kettle roiled merrily

with the force of action on the day and the pill’s

handle would be a difficult grasp throughout the

match.

Barbarians collected the opening kick and elected

to run from inside their own 22 meters line.

Nothing on and Denver fullback, Max de Achaval,

drove the touch kick downfield. Barbos #9, Tyson

Meek, got a disruptive hand on his opposite

number’s shot from the scrum, but the carom went

forward and re-scrummage ordered up by field

official, Chris Henshall.

Bit of fractive behavior in the front rows as scrum

settled, which Henshall sorted early, and first

Raptors hands on ball resulted in a knock-on.

Barbos had a scrum just inside their opponent’s

half. Won and short bang to breakdown. Raptors

were pinged for offsides at their own 10 meter line

just outside the right post. The Denver #15’s

penalty strike just pushed wide, but Barbos back

pressuring inside Raptors 22 quickly with lineout

five meters from the tryline. Raptors blindside,

Spencer Scott, wound up with the Barbos toss and

popped into space for a fast forty before a

mishandle had possession back in Denver’s hands

with a scrum at midfield.

With Raptors in possession at breakdown, Glendale

halfback Crawford Miller’s perfect leading miss-

pass was surely taken by filling fullback, Dustin

Croy, another skip-sling and sticky hands by outside

center, Chad London, and that man was through

for the finish and Graham’s conversion: 7-0

Glendale in the 19th minute.

Glendale were back shortly as lineout ball won at

10 meter line was mauled to the Barbos 22. A

couple of lateral bangs across to centerfield, the

spin to Graham, and the flyhalf had dropped a

striker through the sticks from 30 meters out, and

Glendale had a double-digit lead, 10-nil, at minute

number 22.

Barbarians lineout 22 meters from the Glendale

tryline. Won and spun, but mix-up in the three-

quarters line and Raptors in possession fast and

furious. A won Raptors lineout and the impressive

hunter’s maul into Denver’s business district. Three

banging phases and a spin to Graham; that shifty

man’s flipper assist into goal for his rollover

grounding and, with his own conversion, 17-0, the

numbers to Glendale with ’26 off Henshall’s clock.

Chances followed for Barbos as bangers from the

loose made for short gains and slips into

substantial space from flanker, Brendan Shea, put

Glendale on its heels momentarily, but Raptors

fitness enabled the re-grouping and shutdown

defense, ultimate turnover and points-denial until

Barbos solid in Raptors district with a penalty

award and the choice scrum; won and spun to

outside 5/8ths, Kyle Hitt, and his burst to space

preceded the grounding that, with de Achaval’s

additional deuce, had Denver on the board, 17-7

the scoreline and the heat ratcheting upwards in

the 32nd minute.

With Barbos in possession a testy territorial boot

was collected by Croy and countered well. The

fullback’s offload to London and, after slicing

Page 5: Rm3r 4 3 14

through a pair of defenders, #13 was into goal for

the grounding that extended the Raptors lead to 15

at 22-7 in the ‘36.

Denver got the final points of the half after

Glendale infringement as de Achaval was dead-on

from 20 meters out off the left post with the

sticksplitter. 22-10 for Raptors at Henshall’s

halftime signal.

With Mr. Henshall quite keen on proper

engagement in the sets and Barbarians, at times,

having trouble maintaining possession; Glendale

were sharp employing their successfully capitalistic

style of play to provide for their lead after the first

forty.

Barbarians were hard at Glendale’s goaline after

re-start with lineout five meters out. Won and

banged laterally in short spurts crossfield, but

turnover enabled Graham’s clearance.

Garryowen gathered by Raptors at their 10 meter

line enabled a drifty, shifty run-for-fifty by flying

#14 Brett Willis, his grounding and Graham’s

completion: 29-10 in the 47th minute.

Multiple phases of play from Barbarians now

resulting in their best period of possession and a

lineout in the Raptors district. Well-taken, spun and

flyhalf Taylor Howden had a go before offload to

Shea and the breakdown. Sling by Meek out wide

to de Achaval, his crash over in the corner for five,

and 29-15 with ’53 gone.

A second extended interval of Barbarians

possessive activity, but no joy for the Men in Green

as the turnover beast struck repeatedly with knock-

ons, infringing behavior and forward passes being

its substance.

Final try of the match in the 67th minute as a

Glendale wonscrum at the Barbos 22 was spun to

#11, Preston Bryant, and the wing crashed through

for the dot that meant a record of 36-15 with

Graham’s conversion.

Much action in the last minutes of play, but no

further scoring and Glendale had the five, match-

point victory at Henshall’s last blast.

Scoring Barbarians - Try: Hitt, de Achaval; Con: de Achaval; Pen: de Achaval; Raptors - Try: London (2), Graham, Willis, Bryant ; Con: Graham (4); D-G: Graham

AMOC: Chris Henshall (Referee); Mark Hoskin (RA), Greg Wolf (RA)

noto bene: One dozen men who played either in the Colorado youth leagues or at the region’s universities,

from former CU star and Barbarians fullback, Maximo de Achaval, through to former Colorado Springs high

school Grizzlies and Raptors tighthead, Zack Kennedy - an undeniable victory for Colorado age-grade

coaches for certain!

The Pill, get it?

Got it? Good!

Raptor Eye View

RA : With the Barbarians-Raptors interactive history being what it is, and each and every match contested wel l and harshly, how important this victory? ZF : Every t ime we play the Barbos it is a hard-fought match. They are an extremely talented and strong team and we knew going into the game it wouldn’t be easy. In any game, walking away with a win is the goal, but it was great to get a wel l-rounded performance from the boys. RA : What was your greatest asset during the match?

ZF : Doing the simple things right, that was the key. In previous games we haven’t executed the simple skil ls to our best (effect) and it has hurt us. Our basic skil ls were on point, which allowed us to open up the game. The forwards gave us great ball in the set pieces, and Mike Graham and the backs were on point.

RA : Was this the best outing yet for Raptors in your estimation?

ZF : It was definitely one of the strongest performances we have had since I joined Glendale. We played a full 80 and we got the result we wanted!

RA : You’ve a bye this week, but wil l Raptors rest?

ZF : We have a friendly scheduled against Park City Haggis. It wil l be a game that we can use to get some guys playing t ime that haven’t had much, as well as rest some of the others.

RA : How’s overal l team health? Anyone on the roster from last week unable to work on Saturday?

ZF : Everyone is st i l l doing well and it wil l be nice to have this bye week to prepare again for the Barbos the following week. ed . - Raptors-Barbarians again on Saturday, April 12t h at Glendale.

Both frontrunners, Park City and Glendale, got the five-pointers Saturday and share the ordering seat at

table; Haggis with victory over Denver Harlequins at home and Raptors with the win over Denver

Highlanders on the StoveTop.

The knot at the front of the class will most likely be undone this weekend as the Raptors-Haggis battle on

the StoveTop will not wind up in a tie Saturday afternoon. Furthermore, the outcome of the match could

very well determine playoff seeds for the USA Rugby Men’s D-2 initial round of extra-time.
