RMACRAO NEWS Fall 2018 Newsletter
From the President
Greetings to the RMACRAO membership. I hope that everyone’s semester got off to a
great start. It is hard to believe that we are already almost midway into the semester.
I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the members of the Board: Stacy Sharp
from University of Northern Colorado, Alli McCown from Laramie County Community
College, Amelia Jackson from University of Colorado Boulder, Trish Torrez from Colorado
State University, Miori Gidley from Front Range Community College, Tracy Barber from
University of Colorado Colorado Springs, Katie Risheill from Colorado State University,
Jerry Becker from Colorado State University, Kristin Conway from University of
Colorado Boulder, Katie Pederson from Denver Seminary, Chris Bennett from Denver
College of Nursing, and Charlie Couch from University of Northern Colorado. Thank you
to our new and returning Board members and your dedication to RMACRAO.
I would also like to introduce myself as the current RMACRAO president as well as serving as President-Elect. Our previous
president, Jim Tisdale accepted a new position earlier this year and stepped down as president. We thank him for his service to
RMACRAO and wish him continued success in his endeavors.
Due to the vacancy, the board held a special meeting on September 9, 2018 to discuss how to move forward with the vacancy.
The Board members voted and I am honored to have been selected to serve in both capacities for the current year.
Welcome to RMACRAO two new member institutions: Aspen University and Denver Seminary. Both institutions submitted
applications for membership, which were approved by the membership at the annual business meeting.
Mark your calendars for the AACRAO annual meeting in Los Angeles, California, March 31 – April 3, 2019. More information is
available at www.aacrao.org. This is a great opportunity to engage in professional development with peers from across the
country. If you would like to attend AACRAO and you are a first-time attendee, consider applying for the AACRAO Travel Grant
through RMACRAO. Please contact any of the RMACRAO VPs for more information if you are interested.
Also, be sure to save the date for our 2019 RMACRAO Annual Meeting, July 17 – 19 in Boulder, Colorado. Stay tuned for
updates.
The Board of Directors held a two-day meeting on October 11 and 12, in Boulder, Colorado. Agenda items included the
planning of the Annual 2019 meeting, maintaining a comprehensive membership list, and discussing what support the board can
provide to member institutions.
I encourage everyone to reach out to your peers and network with other RMACRAO members. If you have any questions or
suggestions for the Board please feel free to contact any of us.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 2018 RMACRAO Annual Business Meeting either by phone or in-person. Even
though we were not able to hold a conference this year, it was still important to hold the business meeting to move forward with
RMACRAO business. I would like to welcome Aspen University and Denver Seminary to RMACRAO, both of these institutions
were approved as members at the business meeting. We also had a few small housekeeping by-law changes that
approved. Please remember that meeting minutes can be viewed on the RMACRAO website once they are voted on and
approved.
As noted earlier, RMACRAO President Jim Tisdale has resigned his position because he has taken a new job. I would like to thank
Jim for his service on the board and I wish him luck in his new adventure.
I would like to thank the institutions and board members who have stepped forward to support RMACRAO. In the past few years
that I have served on the board we have had similar circumstances. In order to make sure that the organization can move forward,
Eriks Humeyumptewa has agreed to fill both the President-Elect and President roles during this next year. I would like to thank
Eriks and the Colorado School of Mines for this being willing to do this.
The Board is committed to having a great 2019 Annual Meeting. Next year’s conference is already deep in the planning stage and I
would like to remind everyone that it takes many members contributing and offering presentations for us to put on a successful
conference. Please be thinking of session ideas now and don’t hesitate to email Eriks today to sign up to present! If you have any
thing that you would like to see or any other suggestions for the conference please let us know.
If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to any board member.

Insights from last year’s recipients...
I was fortunate enough to attend the AACRAO Summer Institute for International
Admissions in July. At this event I learned a lot about international transcripts and educational
systems in regions of the world. We were provided with real experience in evaluating validity of
foreign credentials. The facilitators of the Summer Institute were incredibly knowledgeable regarding
international issues. I would highly recommend this training for any employee who is dealing with
international transcripts and/or making admissions decisions based on them.
Abby Calcote, 2017-2018 Professional Development Scholarship Recipient Director of Admissions & Recruitment, San Juan College
As a newly appointed NCAA Academic Certifying Officer for the University of Northern
Colorado, I was grateful to RMACRAO for the Professional Development Scholarship,
which allowed me to attend the NCAA Regional Rules Seminar in San Antonio,
Texas. For a first timer at the conference, I was excited to attend sessions that would
help me to get my feet on the ground in my new role.
I was able to learn how other schools certified their student athletes and pull best practices from each to help form and re-
evaluate our process. Progress Toward Degree, New Proposals, and Case Studies sessions all provided information to further
my knowledge.
At every conference I have attended, I always make sure that I meet as many of my peers as possible. I think it is valuable to
have contacts at peer institutions to reach out and brainstorm scenarios that are challenging. It is helpful to bounce ideas off
others and hear their best practices.
Thank you again for this opportunity.
Michelle Heiny, 2017-2018 Professional Development Scholarship Recipient NCAA Certifying Officer, University of Northern Colorado
