Mine Rescue Team Places 2nd in B Flight

The Mine Safety Olympiad was recently held in Elko from July

29-31. For 34 years, the Mine Safety Olympiad features teams

from the Western states to compete in a friendly competition of

mine rescue skills. Each year, a different site hosts the compe-

titions. This year, Kinross Bald Mountain hosted the contest,

creating scenarios for the parts of the contest.

The nine teams from Nevada and Wyoming competed in the

competition including Kinross Round Mountain, Marigold,

KGBM Robinson, Thunder Basin Coal from Wyoming, and Ne-

vada Gold Mine sites from Carlin, Cortez, Long Canyon, Phoe-

nix, and Turquoise Ridge.

On Friday, teams competed in confined space, medical, fire,

ropes, hazmat, triage and written tests. The scores place them

in either Flight A or Flight B for Saturday’s large-scale scenario.

Kinross Round Mountain’s mine rescue team placed 2nd in fire,

2nd in confined space, and 2nd place in B Flight scenario res-

cue and received trophies for those placements.

Mine rescue teams are common at modern mine operations. At

safety Olympiads mine rescue teams show off their skills and

work together and as individuals to show what they know and

have practiced. The Safety Olympiad is one of several held in

the US. The purpose of these Olympiads is for teams to sharp-

en skills, and learn new techniques and best practices. Ac-

cording to MSHA, the mine operators of surface metal mines

shall establish emergency firefighting, evacuation, and rescue

procedures. Having a practiced mine rescue team keeps skills

fresh and rehearsed in case of an emergency on the mine site.

The Elko Safety Olympiad was postponed last year due to

Covid-19, so having the opportunity to compete this year was

especially fun. Co-captain John Burton said, “I am very proud

of the team, there were only a couple of people who had com-

peted before so it was amazing to go up and do so well. I can’t

wait to see what the future holds for this young team. Thank

you very much to the entire Kinross Round Mountain team, as

none of this would be possible without support from the entire

mine site.”

Lavender Farm One of Many Local Agriculture Enterprises

Upon looking around the valley and surrounding Great Basin,

one would think the arid land would not support much agricul-

ture. But think again. Central Nevada is home to a variety of

agricultural enterprises. According to the 2017 USDA Census

of Agriculture, over 93,000 acres are farmed in Nye County.

The average size of the farms in Nye County is 443 acres. But

not all farms are that large or run a large operation. Over one

third of the farms in Nye County are under 9 acres. Nye County

farms small and large raise livestock, poultry, crops and other

products.

One small farm raising a unique crop is located here in Smoky

Valley. The Side Hill Spring Lavender farm is nestled at 6000’

elevation and uses natural spring water to irrigate the lavender

crop and in the distilling process. Owner Hazel Gomes harvests

the lavender and distills it to create lavender oil and lavender

hydrosol which is used to create many other products such as

lotions, bath bombs, and pain relief roll-ons.

Lavender is known for many purposes. Lavender is said to

have many benefits like reducing stress and anxiety, promoting

sleep, and pain relief. Visit www.sidehillspringlavender.com for

more information. And follow Side Hill Spring Lavender on

Instagram.
