Real-Time Monitoring

RMSReal-Time provides geoscientists and engineers with anintegrated solution to monitor real-time drilling data within the3D geological model. Combined with state-of-the-art RMSTM

functionalities for target picking, trajectory planning and modelupdate RMSReal-Time greatly improves the decision makingprocess at the time of drilling.

Real-time 3D Drilling Diagnosis and Rapid Model Updating

Well planning and access to real-time data has been available inRMS for several years. However, the utilisation of the data hasbeen further improved with the new real-time monitoringfunctionality now available with the RMSReal-Time module since2009.

Real-Time Monitoring using WITSML

While drilling, real-time data from the rig containinginformation about the well path and the logs can be importeddirectly into RMS using the WITSML system. The real-time datacan be co-visualised into multiple views in combination withelements of the geological model.

Geosteering Diagnosis Panel with Alarm System

The new Geosteering Diagnosis panel is an excellent tool toanalyse the current position of the well and the properties ofthe rocks being drilled through relative to other data in the RMSproject. This knowledge is then used to continuously adjust thedrilling strategy. Any number of rules can be defi ned and alarmstriggered when approaching objects like horizons, contacts, faults, targets or a log value. This makes monitoring theoperations easier, and risk and errors can be drastically reduced.

IN SUMMARY

• Team collaboration is greatly improved when live log data is viewed in RMS together with the geological model.

• Monitoring is made easy by the use of alarms.

• Instant re-planning of the well path while monitoring drilled data in real-time.

• Predict the log response while well is being drilled.

• Using the Geosteering Diagnosis panel, risk is reduced by keeping errors under control thanks to alarms. Permanent monitoring of the proximity between the well and the objects in the model.

• Comparing real-time log data with synthetic logs is a key factor in reducing uncertainty and improving wellbore placement.

• Project to bit methods are available to allow for the accurate display of the bit position.

Real-Time Monitoring

Estimated Log Response in the Planned Well Position

Another new and very useful feature for analysing a well being drilled is the possibility to estimate the log response, e.g. gamma ray values, in the position of the planned well. This calculation is based on a 3D parameter, or the log response in selected wells and the stratigraphic position of the planned well. Comparing real-time log data with synthetic logs is a key factor in reducing uncertainty and improving wellbore placement.

Correct Display of Logs and Project to Bit Caculation

To make the right decisions it is imperative to display the data correctly. The distance between the tools measuring the log responses and the bit can be defi ned to ensure accurate display of log data. The possibility to defi ne the exact position of the bit is now available.

Real-Time Interpretation and Model Update

A unique capability of Roxar’s workfl ow is the ability to rapidly update the reservoir model locally around the well. In addition to the more normal methodology of rerunning the entire modelling workfl ow, which can be time consuming and may result in updates away from the well, RMS includes tools for the local updating of both the structural model and the property model. These allow for very local adjustments to be applied in real-time without making undesirable adjustments to the rest of the reservoir model. This ensures that decisions can be made based on the latest acquired data.

Planned Ahead Trajectory

RMS can calculate a Planned Ahead trajectory from the current position using RMSWellplan technology. The Planned Ahead trajectory can be updated in real-time, and adjustments can be made to make sure targets are hit.
