Right to a dignified lifeneeds planning

“Nobody grows oldmerely by living a num-ber of years. We growold by deserting our ide-als. Years may wrinklethe skin, but to give upenthusiasm wrinklesthe soul.” -Samuel Ull-man

This is a quotewhich I admire verymuch. Elderly or seniorcitizen, this word cre-ates an image of sag-ging shoulders ,sadeyes and resolute de-meanour. But shouldwe stick to this image? We all very well knowthat elderlies are a trea-sure of knowledge andexperience for theyoungsters as well asthe economy at large. And as we all witness, life expectancy im-proves, the geriatricpopulation in India isexpected to boom. Inthis age bracket medi-cal expenses are on thehigher side, as with

advancing age manyphysical and mentalproblems arise and sav-ings play a crucial rolein such situations.Dealing with medicalexpenses becomes diffi-cult as income mightdwindle during retire-ment, and as the ageadvances, susceptibilityto various ailments in-creases, which in turnincreases the need for asteady flow of income tocover the expenses fortreatment as well asprevention. Previouslychildren have takentake care of parents butwith nuclear familysystem they do not sup-port parents so the needfor knowing , savingschemes increases andalso the knowledge ofdifferent schemes forthe benefit of senior cit-izens becomes essential

. There are many reallife stories where seniorcitizens are ill -treatedby family. I have heardabout a real incidentand I have written astory based on it. Thestory was published inAmarr Uzala and it gotmuch appreciation. One letter which I re-ceived from a person, asked me how can peo-ple become so cruel toleave their parents insuch a way. I didn’t geta chance to meet theperson to inform that itis real story. I was justgoing through a newswhich said about onereport by Help age In-dia , an organisationthat works for the wel-

fare of senior citizens. In this report the inci-dents reported were soheart stirring. One se-nior citizen told thathis dependence on hisson and daughter inlaw has turned him intoservant ,one fromKolkata said that hisown nephew beat himso brutally that hecouldn’t move out of bedfor 7 days. These inci-dents are reflective ofa larger and deeperproblem that senior cit-izens in the countryface today , and that iselder abuse. To combatthis one has to be awareof the different schemeswhich the governmentof India has launched,in favour of senior citi-zens to protect theirrights and maintaingood health. Here I amlisting some of of the

top governmentschemes for senior citi-zens in India :

1. Pradhan Mantri VayaVandana Scheme

This is one of themost popular senior cit-izen pension schemesin Indiaand it is de-signed for senior citi-zens above 60 years ofage. The policy term ofthis Prime MinisterSenior Citizen Schemeextends to ten years. You can earn interest of8% per annum overthis scheme and theminimum and maxi-mum capping of pen-sion are Rs. 3,000 permonth and 10,000 permonth, respectively.

2. Indira Gandhi Na-

tional Old Age PensionScheme (IGNOAPS) -This is intended for old-er adults above the ageof 60 years, who fallbelow the poverty line, according to the guide-lines prescribed by theGovernment of India. This scheme gives as-sistance with money upto 200 p.m., and 500p.m., for people be-tween 60 and 79 yearsand above 80 years, re-spectively.

3. National Programmefor the Health Care of Eld-erly (NPHCE)- This wasintroduced in 2010, andthis scheme concen-trates on preventive aswell as promotive carefor the maintenance ofoverall health. It ad-dresses the health is-sues faced by seniors

Work from home was never in existence in India till thislockdown and that it was implemented temporarily forthe lockdown phase. Most of businesses as well as officesand government establishments, schools, colleges etcrequire physical presence and it may fail if work fromhome is implemented. Whereas owners can work fromhome for a few days in a week, permanently workingfrom home may affect their quality of management andimplementation. So it is better to open up everything as it was prior toCovid 19 phase and end this concept of work from home or implement itonly where it may work. I feel work from home shall never become thenew norm of the future nor should it be allowed to become one.

Lion Sunil Mishra, Businessman

NAVI MUMBAIKARS SPEAK Do you feel ‘work from home’ should become the new norm

Yes, and I believe Covid has already pushed us to ini-tiate it! Lot of companies have given their employees anoption to work from home till 31.12.2020. It will defi-nitely become a new norm because after experiencingwork from home during the Covid crisis has opened oureyes to the practicality and possibility of this option.Earlier online teaching was considered impractical cit-ing that teaching cannot be effective without personalinteraction. Also, teachers were not equipped with required soft skills. But now after nearly four months of online teaching and working, it isseriously being considered. Even the NEP 2020 has mentioned the possi-bility of online teaching. WFH option is beneficial for companies in termsof saving loads on overhead costs like maintenance, power etc and maybeget more productivity from their employees. It will save a lot of timewhich is otherwise wasted in travelling. Work from home will also reducepollution, traffic congestion and improve the quality of life. However, posi-tions where more security is required, those people will have to go back toconventional job set-up. They can't be working from home for long whileputting company secrets and security at risk. WFH is good for employeessince it saves their travel time and expenses. Work load gets hectic forpeople who have got kids at home to look after. But in our country, a lot ofpeople prefer to work in office setup than at home. Also, younger genera-tion prefer to interact with colleagues rather than work in isolation. Somemay not get motivated if at home. Some may procrastinate. But the Pan-demic has clearly opened more opportunities for remote working. To getthe maximum benefit a middle path has to be reached. But WFH is hereto stay as the pros far outweigh the cons .

Varun Vij, Advocate, High Court, Navi Mumbai

Work from home cannot be a bench mark for each andevery person or each and every sector. Large Corporatescan afford to convert some of their departments whichare connected to Internet Sales and Services, PublicRelations to work from home. Technical expertise ormachine operators, traders, sales staff, house keeping,Banking etc can never work from home. So also the gov-ernment departments and semi government establish-

ments. Businesses required staff for attending office or factory work can-not also adapt to work from home. Services connected to Information Tech-nology which constitute less than 10 -15 percent of overall job sector canmanage to work from home. Moreover the cost of proving basic infra-structure to the employee also needs to be borne in mind. Hence what isnot suitable for majority of the population is not worth implementing andso I strongly feel work from home should not be allowed to become thenew norm.

Dr Pratap Mudaliar, Social worker, Vashi

Yes, it will facilitate work life balance for employees spe-cially females in city like Mumbai and suburb wheredaily at least 2 to 4 hours are spent on travelling. Yes,wherever possible work from home should be encour-aged as it would help in effective utilisation of time. Itwill save time, energy and money too. Also, productivityof people would be higher. However, my opinion is sub-ject to job profile of individual. It will be cost and time

effective for employees and employers too.Aasita Bhatt, Chartered Accountant, Nerul

QUESTION FOR NEXT WEEK :

Should malls be allowed to reopen?

Readers desirous of contributing in this column

may send their views along with their passport

size picture and address to [email protected]

I feel this question itself is not practical. Look at thedrawbacks of working from home. Everything from com-puter, internet, data and instructions has to be deliv-ered to the employee by another employee. This itselfdestroys the very concept of work from home. If 1000people work from home, about 200-300 employees maybe required to provide them the working information ordata. So how come it's useful? Doesn't the cost of opera-tions get increased? Yes, the reduction in office rental

and travelling perks etc may be reduced , but even that is not substantialto continue with the plan. As this was meant to be a temporary option, itshould be phased out once the situation returns to normal. All in all I feel work from home may not become the new norm.

Lion Prasad Punde, Professional, Vashi

I do not support this new norm as it may kill more ofour economy as we all do different type of work. Forsome it may be possible to work from home but for somework it is essential to step out. For people like maids, cab drivers, tiffin services etc. it would be essential tocome out. So I think it would be better if we continuewith our old routine.Khushbu Chandwani, VasaiFor me work from home or from office doesn't really

matter as if we are dedicated towards our work locationdoesn't matter much. Except for some perks we get ofnot traveling, less expense and somewhere adaptable timetoo.Priyanka R. Ambekar, Mira Bhayandar

‘Work from Home' and 'online school' were future meth-od but due to corona pandemic both the things came atour doorstep. Since we are new to these things, theremay some issues but we will work on it. We will do moreand more improvements. And this is our actual future.Roshani Beg, Airoli

Captain Cool’s retirement:End of an epoch in cricket arena

India’s World Cup winning captain, MS Dhoni has announcedhis retirement from International cricket. Dhoni, who was fondlycalled as ‘Captain Cool’ for his calm and composed attitude, hadmade his test debut in 2005 and retired from the longer format ofthe game nine years later.

Dhoni was one of India’s most successful captains. Under hisstewardship, India won the T20 World Cup in 2007, the 50-overWorld Cup in 2011 on home soil and the Champions Trophy in2013. The team also reached the top of the test rankings in 2009under his leadership. He also played in 98 T20 internationals forIndia and has enjoyed great success captaining Chennai SuperKings in the Indian Premier League - winning the competitionthree times since its launch in 2008.

Dhoni, who played in 90 tests, 350 one-day internationals and98 Twenty20s for his country, was dropped from India’s list of 27centrally contracted players in January. He had not played inter-national cricket since last year's 50-over World Cup, where hescored a half-century in India's loss to New Zealand in the semi-finals.

Having retired from Test cricket in December of 2014 with 4876runs from 90 matches, Dhoni carried on playing ODIs and T20Is.With 10,733 runs, Dhoni is fifth in the list of India’s all-time run-scorers in ODI behind Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Sourav Gan-guly and Rahul Dravid.

There is no doubt that every cricketer has to retire from thegame one day, but Dhoni’s decision has come as a shock to hisfans across the globe. Dhoni has scripted history and will alwaysbe remembered as India’s most illustrious captain, distinguishedwicketkeeper and also as one of the most destructive batsmenthe world has ever seen. His leadership quality, his cool and com-posed attitude even during pressure, his batting style, the ‘heli-copter shot’, his natural brilliance will be hard to match. His jour-ney will definitely be a source of inspiration for everyone the worldover.
