Road America is hosting a special tribute to the Chevrolet V8 during theHAWK International Challenge with Brian Redman because the Chevrolet V8 ispart of Road America’s essential character and has powered history-makingmachines across the nish line for six decades. This year, Detroit’s most storiedengine celebrates its 60th anniversary, with well over 100 million produced, representing billions in horsepower. It’s a wonder any tires have survived.

Chevy’s universal V8 rst appeared in 1955, when a group of engineers took only15 weeks to deliver this revolutionary design from the drawing board to theproduction line. Since its inception, racers perceived the Chevy V8’s potentialalmost instantly, as it became the powerplant of choice for every form ofmotorsport from sprint cars to sports car racing.

In the early days, Road America was a favorite destination for Chevroletexecutives to stage sneak previews of upcoming models and to develophigh-performance packages featuring the Chevrolet V8 for production models. The high-speed 4-mile track in Wisconsin's rolling Kettle Moraine has long been abattleground for generations of road racers running with Chevrolet V8’s under the hood, from the glory days of the original solid-axle Corvettes, Sting Rays, and GrandSports to today's championship-winning Corvette C6.Rs campaigned by Corvette Racing.

Wisconsin-based racers Augie Pabst and Jim Jeords excelled in sports car racing in the early ’60s with their Chevrolet V8-powered machines. The lightweight Grand SportCorvette created by Corvette chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov rumbled through Road America’s rolling hills with racing luminaries Roger Penske, Jim Hall and Hap Sharpsharing the driving chores. Notable racers who have made their mark on the legendary circuit with Chevrolet V8 power include Tony DeLorenzo, Jerry Thompson, JohnGreenwood, John Heinricy and Ron Fellows.

To this day the Chevrolet V8 remains the most successful engine ever in many racing series’ and still rules the streets. While the small-block V8 in its original congurationis no longer available in showrooms, it lives on in crate-motor form through GM’s popular performance parts line, and in several racing applications.
