  • TO ALL HOLDERS OF STANDARD PLANS

    This booklet is a compilation of Standard Plans approved by the Michigan Department of Transportation Bureau of Highway Development, and the Federal Highway Administration for use on Bureau of Highway Development projects. Any of the Standard Plans contained herein that are applicable to a specific project shall be so referred to in the project plans and will not be physically attached to those plans. The Standard Plans, when incorporated in project plans by reference, constitute contract documents according to Subsection 101.03 of the Standard Specifications for Construction.

    Engineering Manual Preamble

    This manual provides guidance to administrative, engineering, and technical staff. Engineering practice requires that professionals use a combination of technical skills and judgment in decision making. Engineering judgment is necessary to allow decisions to account for unique site-specific conditions and considerations to provide high quality products, within budget, and to protect the public health, safety, and welfare. This manual provides the general operational guidelines; however, it is understood that adaptation, adjustments, and deviations are sometimes necessary. Innovation is a key foundational element to advance the state of engineering practice and develop more effective and efficient engineering solutions and materials. As such, it is essential that our engineering manuals provide a vehicle to promote, pilot, or implement technologies or practices that provide efficiencies and quality products, while maintaining the safety, health, and welfare of the public. It is expected when making significant or impactful deviations from the technical information from these guidance materials, that reasonable consultations with experts, technical committees, and/or policy setting bodies occur prior to actions within the timeframes allowed. It is also expected that these consultations will eliminate any potential conflicts of interest, perceived or otherwise. MDOT Leadership is committed to a culture of innovation to optimize engineering solutions.

    The National Society of Professional Engineers Code of Ethics for Engineering is founded on six fundamental canons. Those canons are provided below.

    Engineers, in the fulfillment of their professional duties, shall:

    1. Hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public. 2. Perform Services only in areas of their competence. 3. Issue public statement only in an objective and truthful manner. 4. Act for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees. 5. Avoid deceptive acts. 6. Conduct themselves honorably, reasonably, ethically and lawfully so as to

    enhance the honor, reputation, and usefulness of the profession.

    August 22, 2017 To: Standard Plan Book Holders: Subject: Standard Plans R-24-E, R-35-D, R-39-J, R-83-C, B-25-K and B-27-A The Michigan Department of Transportation has revised the subject standard plans as follows: Standard Plan R-24-E

    Exchanged the labels for sections A-A and B-B. In section A-A, revised the right side, cover diameter from 46 to 20 .

    Standard Plan R-35-D Two notes that mention the spillway under laid with geotextile blanket were revised to geotextile liner to match the information in the details. Added text in the note section that liner should cover the entire footprint of the plain riprap. Added a note regarding locating guardrail in relation to a spillway or downspout header.

    Standard Plan R-39-J Revised the E3 joint (now a separate detail) by modifying the seal to a depth of polyurethane or polyurethane hybrid joint sealing compound with a closed cell, polyethylene foam rod. Also, eliminated an obsolete note in the note section in regard to neoprene joint seals.

    Standard Plan R-83-C In the details, the term undercut was replaced with Bedding, Granular Material Class IIIA. The bedding area was darkened and extended across the full width of the trench. Details A, B, C, & D were broken down into A1 & A2, B1 & B2, C1 & C2, & D1 & D2. In detail A1, the amount of Class III material was reduced, only being required from the top of bedding to the center of pipe. In detail A2, the label Class III was revised and broken down into Class III (metal) and Class IIIA (plastic). In details C & D, the circumference of pipe in 2 of undercut was replaced with 4 minimum of bedding. In the note section, the first three notes were eliminated since they were backfill specs which are in or will be added to the spec book. The note section was moved to sheet five. The reference to the Current Standard Specification in the notes, was revised to Standard Specification. Added an envelope of Class II AA around the geotextile wrapped underdrains in details C1, C2, D1, & D2.

    Standard Plan B-25-K Details/scheme added for railing use as a separator with sidewalk or multi use path behind railing. See pages 7 & 8. The non-significant modifications to the railing have a positive or inconsequential effect on the safety and performance of the railing.

    Standard Plan B-27-A This is the initial release of the Bridge Railing, 3 Tube with Pickets as a standard plan.

In addition to removing and replacing the appropriate standard plans with the enclosed revisions; remove Standard Plans R-49-F, R-50-F, R-51-D, R-54-H, R-56-E, R-71-B, R-76-D, R-112-H, and R-127-E (a special detail has superseded these plans). In some cases, it may be necessary to retain the outdated plans until all projects using these superseded plans have been completed.
