January 7, 2013 Roadrunner Tracks Baba Adam – Director Institutional Research Snapshot has been completed and is posted on website. SLO report that is due in March is almost complete and ready to submit to the Board. Working on several other items including international student success rate productivity reports, FTS model, nursing department RT program reviews, president’s high school report, substantial change on Skyway Center psychology completeness study, and tracking information on student transfers to other institutions to assist us by learning more about their transfer patterns. Denise Adams – Dean Student Learning (as reported by Kam Bull) Upcoming nursing graduations include 14 CNAs, 22 LVNs, and 52 RNs. Several faculty members attending the CCC Agriculture & Natural Resources Conference in Monterey. Two new John Deere simulators will be ready by spring, improving heavy equipment training program. PG&E hired four of our welding student certificate holders. RT upgraded computer software, bringing clinical simulation practice in line with current practices. Ken Albright – Director Facilities Received final DSA certification and closeout for Arts, SAS, and Skyway Center. Projects over the break will include timeline of the universe, upgrades in older building restrooms, landscape projects & design north of campus center, and upgrades to irrigation controllers to save water. Holding discussions with County ROP regarding their leasing of unused space in the Skyway Center. New single stream recycling program will begin in the spring. If ordering from Printshop, please use proper work order/form. Sherrie Alexander – Director TRIO TRIO serves approximately 160 students and has office study areas, computers, and part-time math tutor. Workshops this semester included information on transferring to other colleges, internships, what to do with a Social & Behavioral Science degree, mapping techniques, and a CSU, Chico campus tour visiting the offices of Admissions, EOP, and Financial Aid. Twenty students attended the college’s production of the Imaginary Invalid. Jo Anna Birdsall – Associate Dean Career Services & Special Programs Program Review completed on Health Clinic with very positive results. DSPS access lab will be moved from CAS to DSPS over break. Stephanie Jimenez has been hired as full-time Safe Place and Wellness Program Coordinator. There will be a student mental health campus-wide training project on suicide prevention in January, a regional strategizing forum on March 1, and a student wellness fair March 11-13 with AS. Two outstanding science students have been nominated for the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship. Juri Brilts – Manager Grants Research & Development Have submitted 16 proposals as of December, which is the same as last year at this time; two of the proposals have been funded for $100,000, 11 are pending for $1.75M, and 3 were not funded. Two Foundation proposals currently being funded are, Welding Diversity for $20,000, and a MESA Rice and Solar Energy Research grant for $50,000. Others grant submissions include foster youth college level pathways, a national science advanced technology pathways for sustainability grant of $750,000 over 3 years, a pathway to success grant for $316,000, and a rural community college student success initiative for timely career pathways of $1M over 3 years.

Kam Bull – Dean Student Learning Arts Dept. busy with curriculum review and two new transfer degrees in studio arts and art appreciation. Gallery show, Work in Progress, by retiree Dennis Wickes just ended and a new show will begin Jan. 21. Performing Arts production of the comedy The Imaginary Invalid just wrapped with excellent reviews. Marilyn Curtis’ music class will be singing at the Paradise symphony on Jan. 19 & 20. Auditions have begun for the spring “Shakespeare in the Schools” production of Lysistrata. Forensics Debate team participated in four tournaments and received several awards. The team also participated

in many local events including our Fireside Debates, the downtown Book in Common reading, the Great Debate at Chico State. Two of the students qualified for the American Forensics Association National Tournament, and two received scholarships to transfer to four year colleges.

Tim Calhoon – Director System Software Development Technology Center completing work on CC Apply, a new version assisting students with online application to

colleges. The new version includes student accounts and identifiers that tie student data together as they move through different colleges. The Help Desk can now answer phone call questions in as little as 30 seconds, rather than students having to wait for long periods of time.

Jamie Cannon – Director Human Resources Live on-line application screening process from home has been completed, speeding up the process. EEO Title V Compliance Plan has been approved by Compliance Committee and will go to Constituent Committees

and Board for approval in June. HR website has been updated for easier navigation. Please follow-up with your staff regarding TB testing so the District is in compliance.

Renee Carini – Director Student Health Services Clinic is performing well at administering student health services. Have had a lot of students come in with colds, but not many with the flu; working hard to promote and offer flu

shot and flu mist vaccine, including discussions for free vaccines with the County. ADD program is working very well, with an overwhelming percentage of students informing staff that their grades

have improved while taking prescribed medication. Some students are now receiving As and Bs rather than Cs and Ds, with improved self-esteem as well.

Clinic administers ADD TOVA test for a minimal amount compared to outside testing. Health Center will be open during the winter break beginning January 3.

Casey Carlson – Chief of Police Hiring of two officers and training has been completed. Working on hiring two CSOs.

Luo Zhu Cen – Dean Student Learning Library and IT are in the process of converting to a web-based integrated library system to help students discover

resources seamlessly, streamline library processes, and take advantage of cloud computing. Foreign Language Department recruiting students for study broad in Costa Rica May 30 to July 2013 at a cost of

$3,750. Students who participated in previous trips had life-changing experiences. Activities include staying with families, Spanish immersion, volunteer work, and visits to sustainable communities.

TMI hosting the 4th annual Bb Community Exchange Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, 8:30AM – 3PM at the Chico Center. This popular event allows faculty peers to network, exchange strategies and techniques, and present new features in the use of the District's learning management system, Blackboard (Bb).

Doug Cremer – Director Information Technology Services Working with Financial Aid staff on 2013 FileSuite and a number of changes to MyBC they requested. Transcripts are in testing; we have five different types and they are all in final testing. Making several Student Technology Advisory Council (STAC) changes to the communication process. New Unit Plan system seems to be working well. Wayne Howe has been handling the recent issues with the network, and the whole network will be shut down for

2 to 3 days during the holidays for some reorganization.

David Danielson – Dean Student Learning

Accelerated programs in English and Math are proving successful, moving students along quickly while still meeting their needs.

Several full-time faculty in our departments retiring; look for job announcements to fill vacancies. Timeline of the Universe being installed from the Physical Sciences building to the Media Center stairs. Gradually adjusting to being Dean for Language Arts, as well as Math and Sciences.

Lisa DeLaby – Director Public Relations & Marketing Thanks to all for participating in the making of the Butte College Holiday e-card, with special thanks to Peter Dahl

and Dr. Perry. Very professional and entertaining with a lot of positive feedback. Spring Gala March 23 will honor four outstanding Butte College alumni: Glenn County Sheriff Larry Jones, runway

designer and cosmetologist Terri Dougherty, architect Steve Gonsalves, and author of “A League of their Own” Kelly Kendal.

A new auto fair will be coming soon to the parking lot of the Chico Center, with 20% of proceeds going to Foundation. For $58 a weekend, motorized vehicles of all types can be parked to sell. It is a great revenue source with no effort expended from us.

Steve DeMaggio – Manager Dining Services Purchasing a lot more product from Environmental Horticulture; they have new products all the time. Meatless Monday soups have been very popular. Always looking for new products, ideas and suggestions.

Eric Hoiland – Director Assessment Last spring, Assessment started a process through our National Testing Organization to become a certified test

center, aligning our standards with national standards, and received certification last week. Only 26 colleges in the country have gone through the process. The next step is to put together a business model to explore the value of offering different types of testing and licensure with outside vendors/schools in the region and community as a possible source of revenue and positive outcomes for students in the area.

Les Jauron – Vice President Planning, Research & Organizational Development Regarding accreditation, we have organized the Steering Committee who will be training next semester. The Strategic Planning Retreat will be held January 9 &10 with 94 participants to date. Participants should have

received logistical and reading information via email. Will be resending the survey for those who cannot participate to complete.

Educational Master Planning committee is working to develop, format, and decide how the plan will be organized and put together.

Two more one hour Automated Unit Planning training sessions will be held. Piloting a committee evaluation process to make certain our committees are aligned with where we are and where

we are going as an organization. Four committees are working on it this semester, with the idea of going campus-wide next year.

Peggy Jennings-Severe – Associate Dean Recruitment Outreach & Student Life Hosted Principal/Counselors Summit Nov. 30 with 21 high schools represented, including several high school

principals and counselors. AS hosted several events this fall including the Haunted House where funds were raised for the North Valley Boys

& Girls Club, the Fireside Debates, a thankful tree, and the Holiday Bash & Craft Fair. Culture and Community Center sponsored a successful Poetry Slam and a brown bag series where students discuss

their countries of origin. SRC hosted Sustainability Convergence, which included almost 300 students from California universities and

colleges; we are the first community college to host this event. College Connection, Concurrent Enrollment, and Reg-to-Go have all had a successful semester run. We currently have 146 International students from 34 different countries.

Jack Lemley – Director Auxiliary Services & Special Projects Bookstore has had a successful semester, especially working with the online company that provides competitive

prices and quotes so we can purchase our products at a good price, and sell them to our students for the lowest price possible.

Rentals were up with 260 titles available to rent and we have implemented a service that will assist with the return of delinquent books at the end of the semester.

Working with a vendor to supply us refurbished computers for extremely low prices. Working out a few bugs with the new online ticket sales for our performing arts productions. Happy to support

the Arts. Holiday sale currently happening in the Bookstore, as well as in the Chico Mall in conjunction with the Chico State

Wildcats.

Mike Maloney - Director Public Safety Education & Training Police Academy will be graduating 28 students from the130th class with several receiving scholarships. At the

ceremony, two retiring staff members will be honored for their years of dedication to public safety education - Ken Clausen and Deb Mead.

Fire Academy’s 58th graduation will take place in January. Due to budget decisions, the Fish and Game Academy is no longer on campus. They would love to be here, but

have been reassigned to the CHP Academy in Sacramento. Recently met with several counterparts from several other community colleges to discuss curriculum, new state

guidelines, unit plans, curriculum review, etc., and we appear to be far ahead of them in many areas.

Karen Micalizio – Dean Financial Aid & Special Programs & Services Working to make test proctoring area of CAS more efficient with limited resources. Recently opened a Chico

Center location and student usage has picked up in just a limited time. EOPS funded a math tutor for a number of hours which they are hoping to continue in the spring in spite of

limited resources. EOPS accepting applications for 2013; undocumented immigrants are now eligible. Two flex sessions will be held in January, Veterans and Foster Youth. Partnering with Chico State to decide on the best allocation and disbursement of the $60,000 Walter S. Johnson

Planning grant improving higher education opportunities for Foster Youth.

Craig Rigsbee – Director Physical Education & Athletics Faculty has been busy and making a lot of progress with curriculum review and changes. Athletics had a very successful fall season. See December 5 edition of Roadrunner Tracks for results. Football Banquet last night was wonderful with great food from our own Food Services staff. Basketball season has begun. Athletics fundraiser Crab Feed January 12, and Athletics/Foundation fundraiser March 23. Gala will now be in the

Big Room at Sierra Nevada Brewery.

Carolyn Stephen – Director Financial Aid & Veterans Services Financial Aid has disbursed federal funds of more than $17M, and state Cal Grants of about $835,000. We have authorized 14 BOG fee waivers under the new California Dream Act for those students previously

ineligible, and are getting the word out to high schools regarding this information. Under the new Pell lifetime regulation, 85 of our students have run out of eligibility for these grant funds. Thank you to all who participated in the successful Veterans celebration. We currently have about 300 veterans

and dependents; Al Renville and Dan Torres are currently attending the Veterans Summit.

Trevor Stewart – Director Business Services Thank you A&R, Financial Aid, and all others who assisted with the audit. Business Office is short on staff so appreciate everyone’s patience while we make certain accounts payable still

moves along as quickly as possible. Good news for us and the state with the passage of Prop. 30, but we still have a federal fiscal cliff that may impact

us, including FICA at 2% less due to end of tax cuts. Will keep everyone informed as budget decisions are made.

Darrell Whitacre – Director Child Development Center

CDC has had several fundraising activities including t-shirts, greeting cards, calendars, and books featuring children’s art.

CDC has been written into several grants that are currently in process including First Five and Head Start. October’s pumpkin patch and trick-or-treating around campus was fun for the children and adults, as well as the

recently held winter celebration sing-along with the children and their families. Darrell was a very successful Frosty the Snowman.

Food program review that takes place every three years passed with flying colors.

Samia Yaqub – Vice President Student Learning and Economic Development Faculty prioritization process has started with 8 positions we know of to date. We will prioritize 15 because we

expect more retirement letters by December 14 due to the early incentive of $2,000 that was offered to help with planning purposes. Prioritization list should go out in January.

Curriculum Committee is doing amazing work. New regulations regarding course repeatability is impacting a lot of our curriculum, and in the last three months, a large amount of work regarding courses has been produced. The committee has been meeting twice as often.

Yesterday’s Board meeting included a spotlight presentation on SLOs. Institute day will again focus on SLO work for faculty, including a session between noon and 2 pm where faculty in similar GE areas will be able to meet.

Public Relations is working on informational brochures with regard to the five transfer degrees.
