Cloud is Future, Cloud is MustOver the next decade, an increasing number of industries and enterprises will grow with the cloud. Cloud computing will become a basic competency in every industry and will help enterprises go digital. Conservative estimates reckon that by 2025, all ICT solutions for enterprises will go cloud (using cloud technology and adopting cloud models) and over 85% of enterprise applications will be deployed in the cloud.

For carriers, “the depth of the industry is beyond imagination”; the whole process of sensing, connecting & behaving, under the digital transformation era, allows unlimited business opportunities providing for a scale of 15 trillion US dollars in this vast market.

The Cloud 2.0 era has well and truly arrived and currently, some operators are responding to market forces as their walled gardens are being gradually broken down, while others are actively embracing the future, speeding up evolution towards being integrated intelligent information service providers.

Africa currently lags behind the world norm with regards cloud take up, but cloud is the future. In the African market, most operators are local well-known companies which have greater resource advantages, including bandwidth, hardware and power resources; with large customer bases and providing high quality services making them ideal candidates, for providing cloud services.

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS & TRENDS1. The Cloud Market Is Flourishing In the Intelligence Era

We are moving into the intelligence era. The key characteristic of the intelligence era is that most of the applications will be running in the cloud. Everyone, Individuals as well as Enterprises will be using cloud in this era. Telecom companies act as the ICT leaders and everyone must take this opportunity to embrace and integrate with the cloud and get the benefits, in terms of revenue, that will come from the cloud in the next 10 years.

2. Leading Telecoms Focus On Hybrid Cloud and Security

Most Telecoms companies have withdrawn from SME Public Cloud Business and switched to Hybrid Cloud solution for big Enterprises and MNC (Multinational Corporations). As Global Cybercrime increases, Telecom companies all offer more security services to meet higher demands on cloud security on their infrastructure and data compliance.

Public cloud partially closed: Shut down two public cloud services and told users to move their workloads to the company’s Virtual Private Cloud.

Netbond: New multi-years agreement with AWS on Hybrid Cloud solution with AWS & Netbond.

HUAWEI’S VIEWS

ONBOARDING CARRIERS TO CLOUD

owadays Cloud is acting as a cradle by hosting new Internet based Applications. While it enables the blossoming startups with elasticity, scalability, effectiveness and lower

cost; there are various challenges to be taken into account within the constantly changing context. At the same time, these challenges should be also considered by carriers who are major tenants in any cloud environment: 1. Agile Development of Applications 2. Compatibility of legacy applications with new applications 3. Deployment & Migration across public / private clouds 4. Adaptation of DC architecture to Cloud Requirements 5. Security of Cloud Environment 6. Application Stability, 7. Business Innovation & Agility, 8. Cloud Performance

At Huawei we tend to believe that the best way for carriers to adapt to these challenges while onboarding on a cloud environment which is worthwhile has three angles of attack:

1. Cloud Infrastructure

The telco cloud serves 3 main purposes namely, The private telco IT business, Enterprise Client IT Hosting and NFV Transformation of Telco Network.

With an aggressive accent on digital transformation these days, the sheer amount of data is expected to explode with a considerable impact on bandwidth, data processing & storage. Hence, concerns around how to plan DC physical layout, how to build a cost effective DC, and how to reasonably adapt to the expanding data requirement are beginning to gain more importance. Driven by end user experience, Huawei has a business model based on nine dimensions to support changing customer needs. Currently, we can help customers slash time to market [TTM] by building a DC with a minimal time delay.

Unified Management Platform allows the carriers to smoothly operate the system with full-fledged O&M capabilities. The modularity of the DC proposed allows for the reduction of cost while delivering high end performance. At the same time, Huawei Cloud is not a closed model used by only a handful of customers from remote origins. Today, it supports more than 100 application models and this flexibility allows practically any application to be hosted smoothly.

N

Page 10

Page 11: ROADS - huawei · 2017-07-05 · ICT solutions for enterprises will go cloud (using cloud technology and adopting cloud models) and over 85% of enterprise applications will be deployed

In addition to this, we also provide a seamless methodology for deployment & migration to and from public / private clouds.

2. Cloud Business

Carriers of today are faced with the issue of hosting a hybrid IT system. While the need of supporting traditional legacy applications on dedicated hardware is still present. Current cloud systems have to also enable innovative business ideas. This presents a paradoxical situation that cloud suppliers have to address.

With this in mind, Huawei emerged with an innovative concept of IT as a Service [ITaaS] which encompasses computing, network, storage, security, data analysis, messaging services, development and testing capabilities, based on Infrastructure as Service & Platform enablers. On the one hand, ITaaS enables business departments to enjoy IT services quickly and easily in the form of “on-demand, self-service” while on the other hand, “virtual data centre” service based on the traditional enterprise organisation structure also helps enterprises to achieve efficient operations.

With respect to legacy applications, we still support with “bare metal services” and high-performance resource pool to meet the “cloudification” requirements.

3. Cloud Operations

Operations & maintenance of any complex system can be a tedious task in itself, whereby two concerns generally arise (Centralization and Automation). This is even worse in MNCs & Telcos whereby the scope spans over multiple areas and countries. To tackle this issue, a well ordered hierarchical deployment is required with real-time sensors, centralized configuration, performance tuning capabilities and appropriate security barriers.

We advocate full end-to-end automation of the process. ManageOne allows users to effectively monitor, manage faults / alarms, adjust resource specifications based on utilization and self-heal documented issues. These are among the 27 state of the art capabilities that ManageOne offers to allow lesser interventions in the live system.

HUAWEI’S VIEWS

Huawei’s Proposal: Unified Cloud Architecture

The panacea to the before mentioned challenges is a unified solution. Huawei proposes the Unified Cloud Architecture which enables carriers to supports internal IT, B2B cloud services and innovation business “cloudification”. It consists of the following: 1. Infrastructure layer, 2. Cloud operating system and management layer [based on Open Stack], 3. Cloud service layer 4. Cloud service composition layer [can be integrated to third-party cloud service capabilities such as GIS, video analysis and others]

Further enhancements are made to the initial baseline. For example,

the OpenStack open source community version is extended to enhance operational and manageability of the platform, including as-a-service, multi-tenant management, tenant self-service monitoring console, and service measurement.

At the cloud service layer, accompanied by Deutsche Telekom, Telefonica and China Telecom joint venture project needs - Huawei released 45 categories of cloud services, covering IaaS and PaaS, and by the end of 2017 this will have been increased to 70 categories of services fully equipped to support the Carriers internal and external service needs. To fully support carrier’s B2B cloud service, Huawei established Open Lab, which has two main functions: First is Service Verification which can secure apps and data migration to cloud. Second is Service Innovation which can enable new apps, new service creation and reduce TTM.

Page 12

Page 13: ROADS - huawei · 2017-07-05 · ICT solutions for enterprises will go cloud (using cloud technology and adopting cloud models) and over 85% of enterprise applications will be deployed

Furthermore, Huawei is actively engaged with Governments & International carriers to join forces with them in order to attain new heights.

The future of the cloud is clear, but full of challenges for carriers and their partners of choice. Huawei is committed to become a provider of innovative cloud technology acting as a digital society and intelligent social development promoter, as the entire enterprise cloud evangelist, digital strategy envoy and thus preferred partner for carriers. The future is here already and Huawei has already extended the invitation to operators to come onboard, and begin the cloud journey with us.

Three steps to achieve “One Cloud”

Cloud computing is the future, technically realizing the goal of cloud transformation will enable, management and operation to also realize cloud transformation and IT and CT will eventually run in a unified cloud platform. The maintenance and management automation, system virtualization, cloudization will bring a significant reduction in operation and maintenance and management costs.

1. IT on Cloud- IT business will easily achieve cloudization, the management system (MSS) and BSS system first, virtualization and then cloudization.

2. CT on Cloud- Telecommunication business (CT business) virtualization and cloudization are carry forward, such as VAS system was ready, vEPC and vIMS are deploying ,Other CT business are preparing.

Page 13

- SDN and NFV can support network transformation regarding the CT system virtualization and cloudization.

3. IT business,CT business and B2B business run One Cloud- The third step is the full range of cloudization, including B2B and other business clouds. All business systems will ultimately run on one cloud, greatly improving management and maintenance efficiency, automated business deployment and service on-line. Huawei unified cloud architecture to support telecom services, internal IT business, B2B business and innovation business, “One cloud “evolution wii ready for the future business.

SUCCESS STORIES

1. Deutsche Telecom Strategy: Launch Flexible, Open, and Agile Public Cloud Services

ntroduction

Deutsche Telekom is one of the leading converged telecom carriers around the

globe. As of the end of 2014, it has 151 million mobile subscribers, 30 million fixed network subscribers and 17 million broadband subscribers. The Group provides products and services related to fixed network, mobile telecommunication, Internet, and IPTV for individual consumers, and ICT solutions for enterprises. It has branches in more than 50 countries and about 228,000 employees worldwide. In fiscal year 2014, the Group achieved a turnover of €62.7 billion, of which over 60 percent came from overseas services. In an increasingly complex digital market, Deutsche Telekom provides ICT solutions for small- and medium-sized enterprises and multinational corporations.

Challenges of Deutsche Telecom

Having never faced such a disruptive shift as the one brought on by digitization, Europe fell behind during recent years in adapting to a rapidly changing environment, but is now catching up.

I In this process, Deutsche Telekom, together with its subsidiary T-Systems, is determined to lead the way to the future of digitization. Deutsche Telekom is capable of providing customers with end-to-end services and building a world of cloud, Internet of Things, and big data, which is one of ongoing transformations for Deutsche Telekom.

Deutsche Telekom’s customers are expecting it to provide the right tools, the right products, and the right end-to-end services to help them embark on a digitization journey that meets their requirements. These enterprises are no longer reluctant to spend money on testing and development, but prefer to purchase plug-and-play products and services that can be put into use immediately. In addition, they want to have someone by their side, providing training for these products and services.

Many enterprises that have already deployed private cloud are now being confronted with bottlenecks as their service volume grows.

1. The demand for resources is growing rapidly. However, traditional hardware purchase and deployment and online application installation are costly and time-consuming. Futher more, the private cloud can no longer satisfy the fast growth demands of data storage and high-performance computing economically and flexibly. 2. In addition, the costs for operation and maintenance of enterprises’ existing data centers are huge.

Page 16

Page 17: ROADS - huawei · 2017-07-05 · ICT solutions for enterprises will go cloud (using cloud technology and adopting cloud models) and over 85% of enterprise applications will be deployed

From the early stages of the pre-developed OpenStack-based public cloud product, it only took us 10 months to launch the new public cloud platform, and four months to finish the development. This ability to deliver services quickly is exactly what we need. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Huawei and all its staff and partners. It is you and all your support that made all this possible.

- Anette Bronder, Director of Digital Division, T-Systems International

SUCCESS STORIES How did Deutsche Telecom Solve the Problems?

On March 14, 2016 at CeBIT 2016, Deutsche Telekom announced the launch of Open Telekom Cloud. The new public cloud platform provides European enterprises of all sizes with on-demand, pay-as-you-go, and secure cloud services to respond to fast changing market conditions.

The launch of Open Telekom Cloud is setting the stage for digitization in Germany and across the rest of Europe, which also strengthens the position of Deutsche Telekom in the European cloud service market. The first phase of Open Telekom Cloud is set up in two twin data centers to guarantee service reliability. The first is the Biere data center located in Saxony-Anhalt, and the second in Magdeburg. Open Telekom Cloud is an OpenStack-based Infrastructure-as-a-Service solution. It has passed the testing of the OpenStack Interoperability Working Group that is responsible for establishing unified global OpenStack standards and is officially recognized by the OpenStack Foundation as OpenStack Powered, providing reliable core services for users.

Therefore, Open Telekom Cloud has the same architecture as the cloud platform of enterprises that use the OpenStack private cloud. This makes data management and migration between the private and public clouds possible.

Since its launch in March 2016, Open Telekom Cloud has already provided 17 services covering computing, storage, networking, security, management and deployment, database, data analysis, and enterprise application, and it will unveil another three services by the end of 2016.

Deutsche Telecom’s Benefits

By the end of 2016, the Open Telekom Cloud platform has been widely recognized by many enterprises.

The two parties broke into the public cloud market. Both companies put the customers first, responded fast, and spent money on design instead of pilots.

There is a significant demand for a Germany-based public cloud solution. “Access to a scalable, inexpensive public cloud provided by a German service provider from a German data center under German law will be very attractive to many customers in Germany.

1. The European Organization for Nuclear Research Center (CERN): CERN uses the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents – the fundamental particles.

Page 18

Page 19: ROADS - huawei · 2017-07-05 · ICT solutions for enterprises will go cloud (using cloud technology and adopting cloud models) and over 85% of enterprise applications will be deployed

CERN has applied for 1000 VMs from Open Telekom Cloud in the phase I project. These VMs are divided into computing nodes and worker nodes for high-performance computing. With the invocation of APIs, all the computing nodes created and used by the CERN perform stably. High-performance computing nodes, 15,000 IOPS, 125 MB/s streaming r/w, and leading high-performance computing capability in public cloud completely meet the cloud computing requirements of scientific research institutions. In addition, the high-speed network connection capability of Deutsche Telecom in Europe perfectly meets the requirements of fast information transmission between CERN and Open Telekom Cloud or other European scientific research institutions.

2. The Helix Nebula – the Science Cloud: Due to its excellent performance in the phase I project, Open Telekom Cloud was chosen by CERN and 10 other famous European scientific research institutions as their cloud platform in the press conference of “The Helix Nebula – the Science Cloud”. A framework contract, which covers the design, prototype and test of the science cloud, was also signed. Huawei and Deutsche Telecom will closely cooperate with CERN to adjust and optimize services to meet varied requirements of scientific research users in different scenarios and complete building the hybrid cloud ecosystem of the Science Cloud in 2018.

3. The Group Innovation Plus (GIP) of Deutsche Telekom: GIP formally signed a contract for Open Telekom Cloud, providing support for its service development. The first launched application is Business Marketplace, through which Deutsche Telekom is able to deliver services to its customers.

4. REWE Group: REWE is one of Europe’s largest trade and tourism companies. In 2014, the company acquired Commertools, a cloud-based e-commerce platform developer. REWE is now developing and deploying product websites for its customers and partners by renting the Open Telekom Cloud services, and is dedicated to building Commerce as a Service.

5. Daimler AG: Allying with Audi AG and BMW Group, Daimler AG purchased a mapping company HERE to build a platform that enables self-driving automobiles to connect to the Internet. Therefore, Daimler AG needs a cloud service provider to process massive data that HERE generates. With Open Telekom Cloud, Daimler AG officially launched its navigation map service in October 2016.

SUCCESS STORIES 2. Thailand’s Great Mobile Operator: AIS Move Its BSS to the Cloud

ackground IntroductionAIS the largest mobile carrier in Thailand, Advanced Info Service (AIS) has 44 million subscribers

and occupies 44% of the market share. Its biggest shareholder Intouch (formerly the Shin Corporation) has 43% of the market share with SingTel owning 22%. (Temasek now controls 95% of Shin.)

Challenges of AIS

AIS has a silo-like IT architecture in which hundreds of systems, big and small, spanned across the field network’s four data centers. IT devices provided by international vendors and local SIs required several million USD every year to maintain.

B AIS wants to build a unified resource pool by integrating existing IT systems to prepare for fast-rising NFV and SDN, which could move all data on the production system to the cloud and support the evolution to NFV.

1. The existing billing system reached its limit capacity, which required a converged billing system with greater scalability.

2. Time-consuming IT construction and low resource utilization did not meet service development requirements.

3. Existing constructed IT systems separately required a converged, high-performing, and reliable underlying cloud platform to support service development.

Page 20

Page 21: ROADS - huawei · 2017-07-05 · ICT solutions for enterprises will go cloud (using cloud technology and adopting cloud models) and over 85% of enterprise applications will be deployed

Huawei’s FusionCube resource pool solution has been introduced to AIS since last year. It is very beneficial to us. We can combine or update the functionalities of telecom and IT into the same hardware, in order to group the resources and pool the resources. Today, all the world is combined together. So, what we are looking for today is to combine high resource pool utilization of IT and the reliability and stability of telecom. It is not easy to find out that solution, but Huawei can provide it for AIS. That’s why AIS chose Huawei. It’s very suitable for today and the future.
