FROM THEEDITORS
H
OTELS HAVE SERVEDas the changing
houses of social currency since the late
s, when newly minted magnates stalked
Manhattans haut monde along the palm-lined prome-
nade of the Waldorf-Astorias Peacock Alley. Yet in the
decades prior, the citys fashionable fauna eschewed
these too-public precincts. As a th-century arbiter of
etiquette noted, the sole safeguard for U.S. society, in the
absence of a royal court, was its homes. Only the impos-
sibility of putting ones ve hundred dearest friends
into a narrow house, she added, has led to the giving
of balls at public rooms.
If members of the old guard hesitated to cross the thresh-
olds of even the best hotels (see The Top Hotels, page), they certainly would not permit the owners of those
establishments to cross their own. Yet this tacit proscrip-
tion did not deter Marietta Reed Stevens, the wife of one
particularly prosperous hotelier. The daughter of a grocer,
-year-old Marietta began her career as a schoolteacher,
in which capacity she garnered the attentions of Paran
Stevens, a wealthy widower more than twice her age.
Paran began life modestly in a Boston tavern, but his
industry enabled him to buy some of the best hotels on
the East Coast, including the Fifth Avenue Hotel in New
York (pictured). Marietta, whom Paran married in ,
saw in her husbands success the instrument of her ownascendance. Yet the Knickerbockersthe patrician
descendants of New Yorks earliest settlerssternly
resisted the upward thrusts of the willful Marietta, who
purchased the white marble mansion of Mary Mason
Jones, a recently deceased matron of impeccable pedi-
gree, to claim as neighbors the cream of Gotham society.
Still unable to open these closed doors, she traveled to
England, where her husbands millions procured an aris-
tocratic suitor for their daughter, Minnie. Though one
duchess dismissed Minnie as an innkeepers daughter,
her marriage to Arthur Paget, an intimate of the Prince
of Wales, earned Marietta considerable clout in New York,
where British titles constituted the most valuable form
of social capital. Indeed, the arriviste knew she had arrived
when the formidable Caroline Belmont called on her with
great ceremony at her new residence.
The surrender of a house was not the only embarrass-
ment that the Jones family endured on Mariettas account.
Lucretia and George Frederic Jones belonged to societys
most conservative stratum, and though they increasingly
encountered Marietta in the drawing rooms of acquain-
tances, they pointedly rebuffed her. The Joneses distress
was therefore palpable during the Newport season,
when their daughter, Edith, began to court Mariettas
2-year-old son, Henry Harry Leyden Stevens, who on
his 2th birthday stood to inherit $.2 million from the
trust set up by his late father. Unlike most of his contem-
poraries, Harry delighted in Ediths intellectual interests,
and when the Joneses anxiously departed for Europe,
the affable young man followed. Harrys solicitous
demeanor during the nal illness of Ediths own father
warmed even Lucretias icy nature, and in 2, Harry
and Edith became engaged.
Marietta, who ought to have considered the alliance a
coup, remained oddly silent on the subject. The wedding
was set for mid-October, but as that date approached,
Town Topicsannounced an indenite postponement.
The reason for the rupture, reported theDaily News, wasa preponderance of intellectuality on the part of the
intended bride. Yet the likely truth lies in the terms of
Paran Stevenss will, which granted Harry his share of
the money at age 2orat the time of his marriage. By
allying her family with the elite of Old New York, the
spendthrift Marietta would forfeit much of the fortune
that made realizing this ambition possible.
Harrys unexpected death from tuberculosis six weeks
after Ediths marriage to the Bostonian Teddy Wharton
mitigated her public disgrace by providing a plausible
explanation for the breach. Only later, as one of her
countrys most celebrated novelists, did Edith Whartonexact revenge: In The Age of Innocence, she uses the inn-
keepers wife as the model for social-climbing Mrs.
Lemuel Struthers, a former saloon girl of dubious mor-
als whom another character describes as having eventu-
allymarried a shoe-polish baron. There were volumes
of innuendo in the way eventually was spaced, Whartons
narrator acidly observes, and each syllable was given
its due stress.

HE DAIMLER COMPANYwas an indepen-
dent manufacturer that licensed its name from
the German automaker Daimler at the end of the 19th
century and quickly became a favorite of the British elite.
The company, based in Coventry, England, was awarded
a Royal Warrant in 1902 and remained the monarchys
official motorcar manufacturer until 1955, when Queen
Elizabeth II granted the privilege to Rolls-Royce.
Thirty years earlier, Daimlers rivalry with Rolls-Royce
prompted the company to develop the Double Six series.
The cars were powered by a new 6.5-liter V-12 that was
essentially two inline-6 engines paired in a Vcongu-
ration. It developed 150 hp and featured a sleeve-valve
design that enabled the cars to run relatively quietly.

Daimler delivered the rst Double Six in 1926, a year
after Rolls-Royce launched the Phantom I, a more
powerful version of the Silver Ghost.
Though Daimler continued to offer the Double Six
until 1937, it built only 26 examples. The one shown
herewith an 8-foot-long hood, massive wheels, and
a low rooflineis a long-wheelbase version. Its
wheelbase, at 13.3 feet, is nearly as long as that of
Bugattis Type 41 Royale.
The car is said to have been commissioned for the
British actress Anna Neagle by Herbert Wilcox, the lm
producer and director whom she would marry in 1943.

in the rst of 32 lms made by Wilcox. O O

NE COMPANY, Beretta (beretta.com), is
steeped in centuries of tradition. The other,
Apple, has introduced some of this centurys mostinuential innovations. And Marc Newson has col-
laborated with both in recent months. Newson is an
Australian-born industrial designer who rst rose to
fame in the mid-180s with hisLockheed Lounge, an
aluminum-paneled sculpture that looks like a cross
between an 18th-century chaise longue and an aircraft
fuselage. Since then, his designs have ranged from a
concept car to airliner interiors to clothing. He joined
Apple in September and is believed to be responsible
for designing the Apple Watch. (In the 10s, he
cofounded the watch brand Ikepod.) In November,
Beretta, an Italian rearm company that has been in
business since 1526, introduced the 486 by Marc
Newson. The $25,000 limited-edition offering is histake on the 486 Parallelo, the 12-gauge double-barreled
shotgun that Beretta released in 2012.
Newsons design is sleeker and lighter than the original
486 Parallelo. The opening lever hovers over the action
as if suspended in air, and the safety seemingly oats
within the walnut pistol grip. The laser-cut engravings
on the round-bodied receiver refer to the regions of Asia
where the pheasant originated. Each of the six Beretta
galleries (in Milan, Paris, London, Buenos Aires, Dallas,
and New York) is offering one example of the 486 by
Marc Newson.

THE LTIN the name of the new McLaren LT(mclaren.com) stands for Longtail, a
nod to the companys F1 GTR Longtail racecar model that placed rst and second in its
class at the 17 24 Hours of Le Mans. The car was known as the Longtail because,
compared to its predecessor, the F1 GTR, it had an extended rear section with a wider
spoiler. (It also weighed less.) The 675LTs tail is not any longer than that of the 650S, its SuperSeries sibling, but its spoiler is 50 percent wider, and the car is 220 pounds lighter. The design
changes contribute to the 675LTs superior stability (40 percent more downforce than the 650S)
and extraordinary speed (zero to 62 mph in 2. seconds). The 675LT has a starting price of about
$350,000. Deliveries in the United States are expected to begin this summer.

AVISIT TO THE Cy Twombly exhibit at Londons Tate Modern last year inspired the
designs in Wilfredo Rosados newBakkheiacollection of jewelry (available through Just
One Eye, justoneeye.com). I loved his frenzied, maniacal way of scribbling on the
canvas, says Rosado, who is based in New York. The jewelry, which is made in Italy, is
constructed with layers of circular 18-karat gold interspersed with rare colored Scarselli diamonds.
I wanted to showcase colored diamonds in an artistic way, says Rosado, noting that such stones
are typically set in a classical design. The ring shown here features white, pink, and yellow
diamonds, and is priced at $184,000. The earrings, which cost $254,000, are set with white, blue,
and green diamonds.

On executive chef Joris Bijdendijks menu,
traditional Dutch flavors ricochet incontemporary dishes. Zuurvlees, a homey

HERE ARE FEW PLACESin the world as
closely associated with wine as Bordeaux. The
picturesque city in southwestern France issynonymous the world over with rich, earthy reds and
vibrant whites. This year, however, the talk of the town
is not the latest vintage but La Grande Maison, the res-
taurant and boutique hotel that vintner Bernard
Magrez and the Michelin-starred French chef Jol
Robuchon installed in a handsome th-century white-
stone manor.
Since its opening last December, the restaurants two
Napoleon IIIstyle dining rooms have been booked solid.
The demand for tables originates partly with the winetrade, whose luminaries have adopted the new eatery
as their preferred gathering place; however, a renewed
emphasis on great food among the Bordelaises at large
has also contributed signicantly to the establishments
success. Although the city has always boasted excellent
restaurants, what diners drank there often mattered
more than what they ate. Now the tables have turned.

I wanted to create a restaurant with a
great harmony between what you eat and
what you drink, says Magrez, the owner of
four Grands Crus Classs chteaux in the
region and dozens of other estates in France
and around the world. Bordeaux was not
only ready for a great new restaurant, it
needed one. The city has evolved so much
over the last 15 yearsits younger and more
worldly than it was before.
Robuchon also anticipated the moment.
I knew there would be a clientele for a seri-
ous gastronomic restaurant in Bordeaux,
says Robuchon, who holds 28 Michelin stars.
And speaking as a chef, its a gastronomically
discerning city with remarkable produce
some of the worlds best lamb comes from
Pauillac; the seafood is superb; there are
wild mushrooms in season. The local larder
is spectacular and very inspiring.
These raw materials Robuchon entrusted
to his longtime sous chef, Tomonori Danzaki,
a native of Japan, who heads up the kitchen
at La Grande Maison. His contemporary
cooking contrasts dramatically with the din-
ing rooms velvet banquettes and Baccarat
chandeliers. The kitchens modern and
meticulous approach is evident in such pre-
sentations as a medallion of caviar-garnished
crabmeat served on a mirror of crab aspic
topped with tiny tufts of cauliower cream
decorated with dark-green dots of herbal jus.
Indeed, Danzakis technically precise cook-
ing elevates even the most familiar French
classics, including Robuchons famous
version of tournedos Rossinia delectable
composition of let mignon topped with
warm foie gras. At La Grande Maison, the
matre dhtel displays on a bed of salt what
appears to be a glossy, chocolate-colored
lozenge resting on a large crouton. Only
when he removes the morsel to a cutting
board and carves it tableside does one real-
ize that the steak and the foie gras, both
perfectly cooked, have been fused together,
their textures enhancing the luxurious a-
vors of the port sauce and truffle shavings.
To accompany these delicacies, diners
may select a bottle of wine from one of the
best lists in France, which contains 25Grands Crus Classs de Bordeaux (includ-
ing prized bottles from Magrezs crown
jewel, Chteau Pape Clment in Pessac),
as well as vintages from California, Chile,
Morocco, and even Japan.
Although patrons may order la carte,
the tasting menus offer the surest means
of exploring the depth and breadth of the
cuisine. Each begins with a selection of
three small portions of some of Robuchons
greatest recipesperhaps cabbage-wrapped
langoustine ravioli, truffle spaghetti, anddeep-fried frogs legs with new garlic puree.
Fish and meat courses follow, as do a cheese
selection and a suite of desserts, the best of
which is the spectacular caramel souffl.
Still, the sweetest nale to an evening of
epicurean indulgence is retiring to one of
La Grande Maisons six splendidly appointed
guest rooms.

Enjoyed at LengthBOVETS LATEST LONG-RUNNING TIMEPIECE INCORPORATES
A BEVY OF RECENT TECHNICAL ADVANCEMENTS.
N THE SURFACE,the $557,700
Am ad eo Fl eu ri er Tourb il lo n
Braveheart looks like many of the
other pocket-watch-inspired tourbillon
models Bovet has produced in recent years:
reversible and constructed with open, airy
lines that highlight a variety of finishing
and decorative techniques. Yet this resem-
blance is merely case deep. Within, the
Braveheart conceals a number of technical
features that represent a significant ad-
vancement for Bovet timepieces. I had the
idea the day after we opened our new manu-
facturing facility in 2006, says Pascal Raffy,
owner and CEO of Bovet Fleurier.
Afterward, I told my team that when we are
able [to construct] this watch, we will be a
true [watchmaking] facility.
The timepiece qualies as a landmark
leap forward on a number of counts. Perhaps
its most impressive technical achievement
is a long, 22-day power reserve supplied by
two massive barrels. A patented-differential-
gear assembly enables the wearer to charge
these barrels in full with as few as 56 turns
of the crown. At the center of the regulat-
ing system, which has been completely
reworked, is a ying tourbillonanother
rst-time construction for Bovet. The bal-
ance wheel has been replaced by a high-
inertia, three-armed spoke with ogival-
shaped weights at each end. The spoke is
driven by a cylindrical hairspringa type
formerly used in marine chronometers
that Bovet makes in-house. The escapement
has been placed on the reverse side of the
carriage, which also features a separate
seconds indicator that rotates in the oppo-
site direction of the tourbillon.
While many of these features are pres-
ent in other high-end watches, Bovets
Braveheart strings them together in an
especially logical and aesthetically pleasing
manner. Our goal was not just to pay trib-
ute to the long power reserve watch in our
patrimony, says Raffy, referring to thebrands 110 pocket watch that could run
continuously for just over a year. It is a
global concept, with [the] balance wheel
connected to the barrels in terms of both
energy consumption and chronometry.
In fact, Bovet has limited the frequency
of the watch to 18,000 vibrations per hour
to save energy; at this speed, the improve-
ments to both the new balance and the
hairspring are critical to maintaining chro-
nometric performance.
For Raffy, who often approaches watchdevelopment from the perspective of a col-
lector, 18,000 vibrations per hour is a speed
that enables the wearer to enjoy a view of
the cylindrical hairspringthe component
he believes delivers the poetry of the time-
piece. The longest trip I ever take is three
weeks, he says, and I take great pleasure
when I get home to nd the babys heart still
beating. .

GMs Superlative CarTHE CORVETTE Z06 HAS POSTED UNPRECEDENTED
PERFORMANCE MARKS FOR THE AUTOMAKER.
ENERAL MOTORShas good
reason to call the 2015 Chevrolet
Corvette Z06 one of the most ca-
pable vehicles on the market. It accelerates
in a flash, stops on a dime, and provides
more horsepower per sticker-price dollar
than perhaps any other production car.
An extensiv ely tune d version of the
Stingraythe seventh-generation Corvettethat debuted for the 2014 model yearthe
Z06 is powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter
V-8 that churns out 650 hp and 650 ft lbs
of torque. Chevrolet has produced Z06
variants of the second-, fth-, and sixth-
generation Corvettes, but this is the rst
with a supercharged engine.
It is also the rst Z06 available with an
optional automatic transmission. When
equipped with the 8-speed, paddle-shifted
gearbox and the Z07 performance package
(which includes 40 percent stiffer suspen-
sion, bodywork that is more aerodynamic,
Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, and
Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup tires), the
Z06 accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 2.5
seconds (and in 3.2 seconds with the stan-
dard 7-speed manual). That is the fastest
zero-to-60-mph time of any front-engine,
rear-wheel-drive production car. With theautomatic transmission and Z07 package,
a Z06 also posted the fastest time ever for
a production car tested on GMs 2.-mile
test track, beating the Corvette ZR1s record
by a full second. It also achieved the best
braking performance of any GM produc-
tion car (from 60 mph to a stop in .6 feet),
and it produced the most downforce of any
car ever tested at GMs wind tunnel.
While the new Z06 boasts a number of
firstsfeatures and rankingsit also
represents a long-standing production
practice with the Corvette. The original
Z06 was conceived in the early 160s by
Zora Arkus-Duntov, the GM chief engineer
who helped transform the Corvette from a
docile roadster into a world-class sports car
in the mid-150s. After the Sports Car Club
of America banned factory-sponsored rac-
ing, he wanted to provide a performance
package for Corvette owners who would
continue to race their cars. Thus, since
launching the Corvettes second generation
in 163, the company has produced the Z06
and other top-tier variants (including the
aforementioned ZR1) that are comparable
to the highest-performance European
sports carsvehicles that cost twice as
much or more. The new Z06 has a starting
price of just under $7,000. A convertible
(the rst Z06 convertible since 163) will
arrive later this spring with a price tag of
about $84,000.
During a test-drive earlier this year at the
Spring Mountain Motorsports Resort in
Nevada, the Z06s outrageous thrust
accompanied by a blast from the cars four
tailpipesmade short work of straightaways,
and the automatic transmission delivered
well-timed, lightning-quick gear changes.
Chevrolet claims it shifts faster thanPorsches dual-clutch PDK transmission.
The Z06 was sure-footed when turning
into corners, thanks in part to Chevrolets
Performance Traction Management system,
which anticipates power slides and adjusts
the engine torque accordingly. As promised
by their record-setting stopping distance,
the Z07 packages carbon-ceramic brakes
were strong and fade free. Another optional
feature, the Performance Data Recorder,
enables drivers to document and review
their track laps. It uses a forward-facingcamera to record high-denition video,
which is overlaid with data for engine rpm,
gear selection, throttle and brake pressure,
and steering angle.
GM has long billed the Corvette as
Americas Sports Car. While lauding the
Z06s capabilities, it is calling this Vette
Americas Supercar. The designation ts
the performance.
