2004 Western Open If you don’t know where you are going any road will get you there. So here is my question: Who is driving the bus?

Sure looks like me.

The 2004 Season • Ten “Top 10” finishes in a row• Finished 8th on the money list with $3.2 Million in earnings• First career win on the PGA Tour• World ranking of 17th • Fast forward to 2006:

– In February Stephen endures the most crushing defeat in match play ever recorded.

– There is even a plaque at La Costa golf course that highlights the match.

What Do You Mean “It’s Not Working?”

• How do you recover? • It can’t be me—look at what we have

achieved together. It must be Stephen.• Understanding the concept that people need

to be coached in a different way. • I thought all great players needed this.

Breakthrough Performances• Stephen plays with the other side of his brain. He

was the artist• How do you go from getting shellacked in the

Match Play event and one month later win the biggest purse in golf and the 5th Major?

• Call in Alan Fine and the approach gets tweaked and the interference goes away.

• The conversation with yours truly was as follows:

Page 8: Robbie Ames- Presentation for InsideOut Development. March 2016

The Conversation• Less is more • Get out of the way • Stephen plays better with a quiet mind • Let Stephen drive the bus • and its ok if he crashes the bus • What did that lead to?

The New Bus Driver: The Artist!

Faith, Fire, Focus• Allow Stephen to choose the shot. He has to paint

the picture. – The Focus• He has to believe that the picture he paints is the

right one- The Faith• He won’t terminate your services – The Fire • Not quite. I had to allow his passion to bubble up

to the surface- The Fire. • What was the result?

10 Years Later: Where Are We?• The athlete remained the athlete.• My journey in the past ten years is as follows:– Played competitive golf for one more year– Began a new chapter in my life– Worked on the other side of the golf business

Leading the World’s Toughest Workforce!

• Jamaica Mon! Great to visit, tough to work, and even tougher to lead a workforce.

• Basic needs: Water, electricity not always available. • Crime prevented employees from getting to work.

Don’t tell me you have issues. These are as real as they get!

• Figuring how out to coach the team! The “one love” experience on hotel commercials was what visitors wanted… this was not enough.

Page 15: Robbie Ames- Presentation for InsideOut Development. March 2016

The Toughest Workforce (con’t) • We had to choose the method that enabled

the team to perform at their best. • The power of trust and caring is how I got the

team engaged. But isn't that the goal for all businesses: an engaged team of employees?

Page 16: Robbie Ames- Presentation for InsideOut Development. March 2016

How I Used the GROW Model. My Goal was simple: Offer the best golf experience and best- conditioned

golf course on the island!Reality: How to achieve the buy in? This had to be a win-win. The better the service the more return customers. Not “my club,” but “our club.”Options: Presented a clear strategyWay Forward: Get on the bus. Let’s get focused.

Page 18: Robbie Ames- Presentation for InsideOut Development. March 2016

My New Role• Who do I turn to for help? This is the big league!• My first workshop…– Using the 3F’s to inspire others.– Understanding the power of a team and how

InsideOut mindset makes teams better. – Learning employees are not enough you want

committed employees. • What's the difference you ask?

Page 19: Robbie Ames- Presentation for InsideOut Development. March 2016

The Chicken and the Pig!• Starts with the most important meal of the

day! • When dealing with breakfast: – The chicken lays the egg. He is engaged.– The pig becomes the bacon. He is committed!

• What kind of partner/employee do you want on your team?

Page 20: Robbie Ames- Presentation for InsideOut Development. March 2016

Q & A• So I challenge each of you: • How are you going to make the GROW tool

become as common as the clock in the office?
