THE FREEDOM AREA EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION
The Freedom Area Educational Foundation was created to benefit the students of the Freedom Area School District, comprised of the communities of Conway, Freedom, and New Sewickley Town-ship.
The purpose of the non-profit (501 c 3) foundation is to enhance and enrich the quality of the educational experience and extracurricular activities within the district beyond what is typically ex-pected of taxpayer funding.
The Freedom Area Educational Foundation is designed to fund three primary initiatives:
*Higher Education Scholarships for Students
*Grants for Innovative Teaching Efforts
*Improvements to Athletics & Other Facilities
The profits from this event have been designated primarily to fund scholarships for Freedom Area students pursuing degrees in higher education.
The Freedom Area Educational Foundation generally and the Hall of Fame committee specifi-cally always are seeking additional volunteers to serve in any capacity from board membership to Hall of Fame selection committee. Any person who is interested may contact us at freedomareaeducation-alfoundation.org or at Post Office Box 003, Freedom, PA. 15042.
Any individual who wishes to recommend a candidate for future Hall of Fame membership is encouraged to contact the foundation. Requirements for membership in the Hall of Fame include those persons who are graduates of Freedom Area, current or past employees of the district, or resi-dents of the community. HONORABLE ROBERT KUNSELMAN
Outstanding Achievement in Public Service
Judge Robert Kunselman was born in 1937 in Summerville, Penn-sylvania to Harry and Priscilla Kunselman. He was raised in New Sew-ickley Township. He graduated from Freedom Area High School in 1955. During high school he played football and acted in the school plays. He graduated with a major in history from Geneva College in 1959, and from Duquesne University School of Law in 1962.
After law school Kunselman served in the United States Army Re-serves from 1963 to 1969 and was in private practice in Beaver with the firm of Reed, Luce, Good, Tosh & Kunselman from 1963 to 1982. He served as solicitor for New Sewickley Township for a number of years.
Kunselman was appointed to Common Pleas Judge in Beaver County in May 1982, elected to a ten-year term in 1983, and retained for additional ten-year terms in 1993 and 2003. He served as President Judge from 2003 until December 31, 2007, when he was required by law to retire.
Kunselman married his high school sweetheart, Evonne Bilotto, in 1961 and had four children, Harry, Lisa, Christopher, and Elena. He has nine grandchildren.
During his twenty-five years on the bench, Kunselman has tried sev-eral death penalty cases, several multi-million dollar civil cases, and eve-rything in between. He specialized in child custody cases during the first sixteen years of his tenure and civil cases during the remainder of his tenure.
Kunselman has been an active parishoner at Sts. Peter and Paul Ro-man Catholic Church in Beaver for more than forty years. He has served as a lector, Eucharistic minister, and a member of the pastoral council and school advisory council.
He also has served as chairman of the Beaver Area United Way and as secretary of the Beaver County Bar Association.
Kunselman is a self-proclaimed history buff. In his spare time he also enjoys playing golf.
Politics is the art of the possible.

ANGELA L. MALAGISE
Outstanding Achievement in Athletics
Born in 1953 to Anna and Angelo Malagise, Angela is the youngest of seven children. A 1972 graduate of Freedom Area High School, Angela completed her academic career before women’s athletics were a staple in high schools. In fact, the first women’s basketball team at Freedom was not formed until the year after she graduated. Despite the lack of formal training and organized women’s teams, Angela’s love of sports and her athletic prowess led her to achieve many Beaver County Women’s “firsts”.
For nearly twenty-five years Malagise was a WPIAL referee, the first female member of the Beaver County Basketball Chapter of Referees. As a referee she was the first woman from Beaver County to officiate a PIAA high school girls’ championship game and the first woman to referee a boys’ junior varsity game. Additionally, she officiated volleyball, softball, and little league and pony league baseball contests.
In addition to officiating numerous sports, Malagise also participated and garnered distinction in sports performances. In 1976 Malagise was the starting third baseman for the first Women’s Class A Championship Adult Softball Team.
In 1992 Malagise became the first woman from Beaver County to bowl a 300 game.
A self-taught golfer, Malagise is a well-known amateur on the cir-cuit, participating and finishing in the top three of local tournaments for several years running. She has golfed in the Women’s Center of Beaver County golf tournament for the past sixteen years.
Malagise also has been active in various coaching assignments. She has lent her expertise as both a volunteer and paid coach for a number of women’s sports in Beaver County. She served as a diving coach for Free-dom Area High School from 1973 through 1974, assistant basketball coach at Aliquippa High School, and head coach for young girls’ recrea-tional softball teams for several years.
Had organized women’s sports been prominent during Malagise’s high school career, her resume undoubtedly would be even longer and hallmarked by additional awards and honors.
In terms of her career, Malagise has been employed by Westing-house/Eaton Corporation for the past thirty-eight years. She has been a faithful donor and supporter of the United Way, the Women’s Center, and Villa St. Joseph for many years.
Malagise still golfs, enjoys spending time with her family and friends, and always will serve as an inspiration to women athletes in Beaver County.
Sports do not build character. They reveal it.

JOANNE (GENOVA) SUJANSKY
Outstanding Achievement in
Business & Leadership
Dr. Joanne Genova Sujansky was born to John and Mary Ellen Genova in Freedom in 1950. She attended Freedom Area High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society and the marching band. She graduated from high school in 1968 and attended Slippery Rock University where she earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in education. She completed her PhD from the University of Pittsburgh.
After completing her degrees at Slippery Rock, Sujansky was appointed to management and director-level positions within the human resources de-partments of Presbyterian University Hospital and Mercy Hospital of Pitts-burgh. In 1980 she started her own consulting practice, which expanded quickly in size and scope. Today KEY Group™ serves Fortune 500 and non-profit organizations around the world.
A popular and much-in-demand speaker, Sujansky traveled the globe exten-sively delivering keynote addresses to audiences in more than 30 countries. She was well known for the infectious energy of her speeches and her ability to instill her audiences with enthusiasm and appreciation. Sujansky is estimated to have spoken to more than
a hundred thousand people over the course of her career. She was a Certified Speaking Professional (CSP), the highest earned designation of the National Speakers Association, recognizing a commitment to ongoing education, proven speaking experience, and ethical behavior. NSA only awards the designation to individuals who have completed a comprehen-sive set of criteria.
Sujansky was also a dedicated member of the American Society of Training and Development. After serving as president of the local Pitts-burgh Chapter and ASTD Region 3, she was elected to the national presi-dency of ASTD in 1985, becoming the youngest president ever elected to serve that 31,000-member world-wide professional organization. In 1988 Joanne Sujansky received the Gordon M. Bliss Award, the highest honor bestowed by ASTD for service to the profession.
She has authored or co-authored more than fourteen books on lead-ership and change, including the Power of Partnering, The Keys to Con-quering Change, and Training Games for Managing Change. As a pas-sionate promoter of Pittsburgh, she wrote and published the book Pitts-burgh Will Steel Your Heart in 2007, later selected as an official publica-tion of Pittsburgh’s 250th anniversary celebration. Her most recent book, Keeping the Millennials with co-author Dr. Jan Ferri-Reed, was released by publisher John Wiley and Sons this past spring.
Long considered an expert resource in several areas, Sujansky was regularly called upon by publications such as TIME, Selling Power, USA Today, Investors Business Daily, New York Times, Industry Week and Forbes to provide guidance on leadership practices and productive work-place cultures. In addition she has made numerous guest appearances on radio and television programs, including “Pittsburgh Today” and “Our Re-gion’s Business.”
Sujansky passed away on December 10, 2009 after a long and coura-geous battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband Chuck and her three children, Cara Olshanski, Justin and Jenna; and two grandchildren, Luciana and Sofia.
Knowing that we can make a difference in this world is a great motivator.
