A good friend of mine once said that leadership is a journey, one that has no final destination yet one where we can learn something every day. During these journeys, we will meet many different types of leaders and share a multitude of experiences and interactions. The people you meet in these shared experiences will shape the kind of leader you become.

The Robert Mayer leadership Academy does a great job of bringing together key professionals from every walk of business. As you and your classmates progress through the Academy, you will face challenges, build self-awareness and develop a network of community leaders. You will look back on this experience and remember this Academy as a big step in your leadership journey.

ABOUT ACADEMYThe Leadership Academy provides Huntington Beach professionals with a unique opportunity to connect with their community and to better understand the components of its government, public safety, business community, economic climate, social uniqueness, education and health care system.

Graduates have found the program to be invaluable to enhancing their careers and formulating lasting relationships with fellow classmates.

WHY JOINApplicants chosen for the 2016-2017 program will have the unique opportunity to develop their potential for public responsibility. Each of the nine workshops are designed to inform, motivate and challenge the participant and give you a glimpse behind the scenes of your community. The Leadership Academy does not advocate programs or particular solutions. It seeks, instead, to present the views of a wide spectrum of experts in the selected areas of discussion.

Any adult 18 or over, who works or lives in Huntington Beach, may apply. Since the class size is limited to 30 people, the Academy will select a good balance of individuals who want to learn how to become more effective leaders and those who simply want to learn more about our community. Those not selected are encouraged to apply the following year.

I am very grateful to Robert Mayer and the Robert Mayer Leadership Academy for all the amazing Huntington Beach people, places, and programs I have had the opportunity learn about during this past year. Because of the Leadership Academy, not only myself personally, as an academic Dean, but Golden West College in general, have been able to develop meaningful relationships that will benefit students and our Huntington Beach community for years to come!Before the Academy, I had very little understanding of our community’s profile--the who, what, when, where, why, and how of Huntington Beach. I believe I have gained knowledge and developed relationships that would have taken me years and years to develop and understand. 2. Program dates are the third Wednesday of every month for nine months (September - June; December being dark), with the exception of the overnight retreat in October.

I understand that the Robert Mayer Leadership Academy includes eight day-length programs and one overnight retreat held during the nine-month period beginning in September.
