Thisexpansivepropertyspeaksoftheowners’NewEnglandrootsandloveofplants.Theirelegantwhitefarm-stylehouseissurroundedbyporchesandpatios;awhitepicketfenceenclosestheformalherbgar-den,whichisenteredthrougharose-coveredarborandincludesacobblestonegardenhousethatwasformerlya19thcenturysmokehouse;there’slargevegetablegarden,achildren’swhimsicallyfurnishedplayhousewithsleepingloft,afishingpondattheendofapaththroughthewoods,andlushcon-tainersandboldlycoloredperennialbeds.

Iwantedtotakeafewminutestointro-ducemyselfasyournewExecutiveDirector.IcometotheRochesterCivicGardenCenterbywayofcareerineducationaladministra-tionandadvocacythatspansK—12andhighereducation.Alongtheway,IearnedmyMasterGardenercertificateandcon-vincedmyhusbandthatweshouldconvertourIrondequoitlawnintoamassivegardenthatbringusjoyandbackacheinequalmeasure.Likeyou,I’mforeverinsearchoflearningopportunitiestohelpmebecomeabetter,smarter,andhappiergardener.AndlikesomanyRochesterfamilies,minehasmanyfondmemoriesattheWarnerCastleandSunkenGarden.

I’vespentmyfirstfewmonthsattheCastleporingoverourinstitutionalarchivesandmarvelingathowvisionaryourfounderswere.Iimaginethemtobeaninspired,tena-ciousbunch,whothoughtbigandrefusedtotaketheeasypathwhentheyfoundedthe“RochesterGardenCenter”nearlysevendecadesago.TheytoiledforyearstoearnthedistinctionofRegentscharter,thehighestorderofnon-profitorganizationsinNewYorkState.In1996theyadded“Civic”toourofficialname,nodoubttounderscoreourpublicmissionanddistinguishourworkfromthatofthemanyfineprivategardenclubsalreadyservingRochester.

Ifnotforthehand-writtencalligraphy,ourRegentscharterdocumentmighthavebeenwrittentoday.Initourfoundersdescribedahorticulture“knowledge”orga-nization,decadesbeforetheconceptoftheknowledgeeconomywasborn.Theyspoketotheintersectionofhorticultureandenviron-mentalism,foretellingthe“backyardhabitat”andnativespeciesmovementsthatanimate

somanyofustoday.Theychampionedcol-lectiveactionandrecognizedtheneedforcoordinationandcollaborationamongthedozensoforganizationsdoinggoodworkintheregion’shorticulturesector.Iwasespeciallydelightedtolearnthatourfound-ersalsobelieveditwastheirdutytoeducatechildrenandcultivatethenextgenerationofgardeners.

It’sanexciting,compellingcharter,onethatcomesaliveinthecoursedescriptionsinthisSummercatalogue.It’sacharterthatisjustasboldandrelevantin2017asitwasin1950whentheBoardofRegentsgrantedit.In2020,theRochesterCivicGardenCenterwillcelebrateour70thanniversaryofourof-ficialfounding.Thenextfewmonthswillbespentreflectingonwhowewanttobeat70andwhatweneedtodotorealizethatvision.Asalways,ourcharterandtheinputofourmembersandfriendswillguideusthroughthisnextlegofourjourney.

Dayweekend,inthegrassyareaoutfrontofWarnerCastle.ProudMarketbeganmorethan30yearsagoasavenueforRochester-areagardenclubstoexhibitthefruitsoftheirlabor—theplantstheywere“proud”toshowcasetofellowgardeners.

Manyofyouarefamiliarwiththisevent,andneednofurtherencourage-ment.Incaseyouhaven’tyetmadeitto

ProudMarket,itisagreatopportunitytobuyallmannerofplants,manyofthemunusualorhardtofind,atreallygreatprices.Wehaveseveralregularvendors—gardenclubsandsmallindependentplantspecialists,andofcoursetheRCGCtable—andyoucancountonsomereal“finds.”Lotsofperennials,shrubsandtrees,nativeplants,aswellasannualsandvegetables.Comeearlybecauseplantsselloutfast.
