Dear Fellow Members:
What a “memorable “ MemorialDay! An estimated 170 membersattended the 8 o’clock service topay tribute to our men and womenwho have died in defense of ourcountry and to remember thosemembers and spouses who passedaway during the year. MotherNature smiled on us throughout theday, and so the parade went off
without a hitch. Many thanks to the RJYC officers and toall who helped, either as participants or observers.Membership support is what made and keeps RYC great.
The annual summer cruise will be under way when youreceive this issue of the Log. As of now, 45 boating“families” had signed up to participate in at least oneport of call. This is a great way to renew old friendshipsand make new ones.
For some number of years now, various boards ofdirectors have wrestled with the concept of attemptingto make the club cashless. Commencing around July 1,we will institute a system whereby visiting boaters and
regatta participants will be issued a temporary“membership” card against which they can chargepurchases made at RYC. See the article below.
With the summer upon us, we may observe people orevents, which for whatever reason do not appear to becorrect. If you feel you see something with which you’renot comfortable, please contact Mary Smith, our ClubManager or one of the flag officers rather thanattempting to deal with it yourself.
By now, most of you have seen the “Martin-16.” It is herethrough the hard work of Keith Burhans, and it will beused to teach the physically challenged in our communitythe fine art of sailing. It’s really a high-tech machine andshould be fun for those who take lessons!
Harborfest was back in Charlotte, and therefore our firstdeck party was able to take advantage of theneighboring fireworks display. The outside areas werefilled to capacity with members and guests enjoying thepig roast and a terrific band! Don’t miss the next outsideevent on Saturday, July 22!
See you at our Club!Fred Karshick, Commodore
Commodore’s Message
Please submit articles or photos forconsideration for publication in the Log no later than the monthly Boardmeeting night to Karen Gerwitz, OfficeManager ([email protected]),Shelly Dinan, Editor ([email protected])or Kate Karshick, Log Chairperson([email protected]).
ARTICLES FOR THE LOG
During the month of July, the RochesterYacht Club will start creating “GuestMemberships” for our transient visitorsand regatta participants. Similar to theprocess that some of our Canadiancounterparts offer, visitors to RYC willnow be able to establish a tab for theduration of their visit, guaranteed by acredit card. This system will allow thevisitor to more easily enjoy our services, and save the Yacht Club both time andmoney by only processing one creditcard transaction for the visitor.
Please feel free to contact RearCommodore Charlie Ross if you have anycomments or concerns regarding ourguest memberships.

We can thank the weather gods forthe beautiful weather we have hadthus far this season. It has helpedto make all of our outdoor eventsmost pleasant.
Wednesday and Friday race nightshave been very popular. The warmnight air has helped create a niceambiance for the sailors to enjoy. The buffet this year offers a widevariety of grilled items from whichto choose.
Many of you have taken advantageof our dining service on the deckwhich is available for both lunchand dinner Tuesday throughSunday during our regular dininghours. We will continue to haveentertainment on Wednesday andFridays from 8 until 10 pmthroughout the summer for addeddining pleasure.
Our snack bar leaves yet anotheroption for you and your guests tochoose from. Its convenientlocation near the pool makes iteasy for kids in wet bathing suits tograb a bite to eat without havingto change into dry clothes andcome inside. The hours ofoperation are from noon until 7 pm every evening except Friday.Due to the limited space in the GrillRoom kitchen, the Snack Bar andBar Menu are only available until 6 pm in order to provide optimaldinner service on Friday. However,we do provide dining service in theSnack Bar area with both theregular and children's menusavailable until 9 pm Burgers areavailable during all dining hours.
Don't forget our specials that wecontinue to offer during thesummer season. Chef Georgeprepares Carved Prime Rib onThursday nights and SupperSpecials on Sunday nights that hegears towards home cooking foryou and your family to enjoy. We
continue to ask for reservationswhen you can. This helps thedining service run smoothly andefficiently. However, we do notwant to discourage those whochoose to just stop in. We willserve you in the best way possibleon a first come, first serve basis andask in advance for your patience.
Due to the popularity of ourbeautiful 8M Room, we requestagain this year, that you beconsiderate of others that may bewaiting to dine there also, especially on Friday nights. Ourhostess plans on approximately oneand one half hours for eachseating. This should be sufficienttime for you and your guests toenjoy your meal without feelingrushed. Should you choose toenjoy a longer stay, we ask that youmove to the lounge or deck areafor a cocktail or just for your leisureand relaxation after dinner duringour busy season.
I know it is summer, but it is theperfect time to start thinking aboutthose fall and winter events youplan to host. Your Club is theperfect place to entertain guestsand we are happy to accommodateparties and meetings for alloccasions. Banquet menus areavailable for your review and canbe sent via e-mail to you or theperson in your office whocoordinates your special events. You may contact me or DawnNicole to reserve a date for yourfunction. Junior members express thanks formember donations and support atrecent RJYC annual auction
According to Kate Roth, Past Commodore of theRochester Junior Yacht Club, “Our membershiphas grown to consist of 65 members, ages 13
to18, and over two thirds of these members haveparents who belong to RYC.”
“There’s been more attendance at monthly meetings asRJYC is gaining in popularity. Everyone in high schoolsailing tends to join, so more people are drawn to theyacht club,” said Kate. “We like to socialize and havetons of fun. Our three day trip to Smuggler’s Notchwas our third ski trip!”
Recently, the RJYC’s major fundraiser, the annualauction this past spring, brought in close to $8,ooo toadd to the RYC general fund. Treasurer Jamie Moranfelt that “the success was due to the quantity andquality of items donated by members for both the liveand silent auctions. Gift certificates were real popularas were the two Franz Schwenk paintings.”
The RJYC’s main mentor, Past Commodore Tom Roth, commented that “…the RJYC building has evolvedfrom that of an RJYC center and moved to being asailing center. The real purpose, hopefully, is that theteenagers have a place to come, enjoy theirtournaments, and have this place as a spot to socializewith their friends.”
Officers are elected each spring, so Kate, a senior atMercy, plans to attend Hobart/William Smith afterspending the summer teaching sailing here at RYC.
Jamie, a Pittsford Sutherland senior, will enterVillanova.
Incoming RJYC Commodore Cory Murfin has severalobjectives. “We need to keep the core kids involvedand we need to build up the membership. Focusing onthe kids now sailing in the 420s program will beimportant. Also, I hope to encourage members tobecome involved in the events sponsored both by RYCand RYCWA, who put on the big parties for thechildren, such as on Halloween, the Santa Brunch, andthe Easter Egg Hunt. Communication is a majorobjective.”
Fleet Captain Graham Gardner added that “…there’s aneed to get more kids involved in laser sailing. It’s onlynow that sailing is being considered a sport in highschools and even featured in yearbooks such as Mercyand Honeoye Falls, my high school. I’d like to see fundsgo to sailing equipment such as sails and rigging forthe fleet. Also, we need more out on lasers.”
Amy Moran, Jamie’s mother, commented that Jamiewas 15 when he joined RJYC and “it’s been a very goodexperience. Making longterm friends, learning timemanagement, and determining priorities has reallyhelped him figure out what’s important.”
As the change of watch takes place, Tom Roth made ita point to say, “It’s certainly been fun to watch thisgroup grow. High school sailing has been the realcatalyst we’ve reached out to people who haven’t beenexposed to water and changed their lives.”
Joining Commodore Murfin and Treasurer Gardner onthe 2006-07 RJYC roster are Kurt Texter, ViceCommodore; and Killian Corbishley, Secretary.
Changing of the guard– 2005-06 RJYC officers, left to right, Graham Gardner, Fleet Captain; Kate Roth,Commodore; Cory Murfin, Vice Commodore and Jamie Moran, Treasurer. As Kate and Jamie head off to collegein the fall, Cory takes over as Commodore and Graham will serve as Treasurer for the 2006-07 season.
