History of Rockets

Alexandra #2

During the late 17th century Sir Isaac Newton organized his understandings of physical motion into three specific laws. The laws explain why rockets work and how they are able to work in the vacuum of space. These impacted the design of rockets. During the end of the 18th century and early into the 19th, rockets experienced a revival as a weapon of war. Early in the 20th century Robert Goddard conducted practical experiments in rocketry. While working on solid-propellant rockets, Goddard became convinced that a rocket could be propelled better by liquid fuel. Goddard built the first successful liquid propelled rocket. Rockets had a long history and it still continues today as they are made more advanced.

Formulas

Speed- Distance/Time

Conversion of feet per second to miles per hour- ((FPS*60)*60)/5280

Conversion of average angle measure to tangent value- Opposite/Adjacent

Conversion of miles per hour to a Mach number- 1 Mach=761 MPH, Ratio=Object Speed/Speed of Sound=Mach Number

Conversion of tangent value to height in feet for rocket elevation- Average Angle*Tangent Value=Height

Tangent:

70+34=104 104/2=52

Tangent of 52degrees is 1.279941632

Speed:

234.22931/4.19= 55.901983 FPS

((55.901983*60)*60)/5280=38.114986 MPH

38.114986/786= .0496288 Mach

Newton’s Law of Motion

Newton’s First Law of Motion states that an object at rest will stay at rest unless an outside acts upon it. Ex. Ball

Newton’s Second Law of Motion states that an object will change velocity if it is pushed or pulled. Ex. Door

Newton’s Third Law of Motion states that for every action there is an opposite equal reaction. Ex. Bouncing a basketball.

Law that Applies to Rocket Launch

Alexandra #8

3rd- Whenever one object exerts a force on a second object, the second object exerts an equal and opposite force on the first object.

This law applies to the rocket because when the rocket engine is set off it has a force going downward and as an equal and opposite reaction the rocket goes upward.
