But how did St. Patrick's Day become the big party that it is today? People celebrated the life of St. Patrick who was a priest and spent his life con- verng the Irish to Chrisanity. We cele- brate St. Patrick's Day on March 17 every year because that was the day that St. Pat- rick died. At any St. Patrick's Day event you aend these days, you will just see a sea of green. Open Microphone Cafe -Wya Stambaugh In Mrs. Lawrence's class on January 12, 2016, you would see a classroom dressed to cafe standards. The kids were reading poems aloud to their classmates. One kid named Isaac read a poem called Boa Constrictor. He did it because it was funny. The book you can read it from is Where the Sidewalk Ends. It is told from the perspecve of a kid be- ing eaten by a boa constrictor. Lily Snyder liked a poem called “Peanut Buer Sandwich.” She liked it because it was funny. When he was interviewed aſter the reward, he said, "In all honesty, we came into the game wanng to play our defense. We knew if we were to be consistent and play our style of defense that we'd be able to come out on top." He had a total of 2.5 sacks on Cam New- ton that made the Panthers lose 27 yards. Miller also had two forced fumbles with assistance from his team and a defended pass. Von Miller also said, “If I could cut this award, I would give it to DeMarcus Ware, and Derek Wolfe.” Broncos Take It This Time -Gavin Smith This Super Bowl was fun for some people and not so fun watching for others. People cheering for the Broncos got what they wanted. But on the other hand people who went for the Panthers are mad because of what happened in the game and the out- come. Some calls in the game make people think that it might be rigged. But throughout the whole game the Broncos defense was too much for Cam Newton and their high pow- ered offense. Late in the fourth quarter Cam fumbled the ball and made a controversial decision. He did not jump for the ball, even though it was right in front of him. In my opinion I think the reason he didn't jump for the ball was because of injury reasons. But for Peyton Manning's most likely last year, he got what he deserved. One of the great- est of all me will get his second super bowl victory. The New Kid -Wya Stambaugh Do you know Rahmel Bay? Well, he is the new kid at SGI. Some people he looks up to are LeB- ron James, Desean Jackson, and Cam Newton. When he grows up he wants to be an NFL running back. His favorite sports teams are the Cleveland Browns and the Portland Trailblazers. He is almost certain he has 20 pairs of shoes. Titanic ll Launch in 2018 -Scarle Garman Titanic ll is supposed to launch in 2018. This exact replica was supposed to set sail in 2016 but got pushed back to 2018. The only big difference is that it will have more lifeboats, will be wider, and have a welded hull and not a riveted one. The voyage will be from Jiangsu in East- ern China to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. The original Titanic was sup- posed to sail the Atlanc Ocean from Southampton, England, to New York. Bad Water in Flint -Alexa Strohman

Flint is a town in Michigan. But the tap water in Flint isn't clean, or clear. Instead, it is dirty, and brown because of a high level of lead and iron that is in it. The water crisis started in April 2014, when Flint switched their water source from Detroit water to wa-ter from the Flint River.

The city switched their water source to save money. After they switched their source, people complained that the water had a weird color, smell, and taste. The Department of Environmental Quality ignored the complaints. The problem with the water was that it had high levels of lead in it. Anyone who drank the water in Flint since April 2014 has a high level of lead in their bloodstream. Lead is harmful to people, especially children. It can cause health problems, including permanent effects on the brain and nervous system. The lead got into the water because the water was not properly treated. Also, lead from the old

pipes got into the water after the city switched their water source. In October 2015, Flint switched back to Detroit water, hoping that would fix the prob-lem. Unfortunately, switching back didn't solve the problem. The city wants to replace the old pipes, so lead won't get into the water. It wasn't until January 5, 2016 that Flint, Michigan was declared in a state of emergency. On January 12, 2016, the National Guard brought bottled water to Flint. The Flint water crisis has been going on since April 2014, and is still going on today. Not many people outside of Flint know about the problem, but it is very serious. Flint needs help!

Albino Green Turtle Discovered on a Beach in Australia!

-Cindy Zheng Volunteers found an extremely rare green sea turtle in Australia and called the green albino turtle, Alby. They are hardly ever seen in the wild and the vol-unteers are lucky to see the albino green sea turtle. People have noticed that Alby isn’t green at all. He has much more of a pale white color like a pearl, and Alby was a hatchling out of 122 other hatch-lings that went ahead into the ocean. Alby and his siblings were born from their eggs at Friday evening when no one was anywhere outside. There isn’t a big chance that Alby would survive on his own in the wild, in fact, he might not even survive in the wild with the help of others. They are so extremely rare that last year, 4 of them hatched but only half of them survived and went on into the ocean. Alby can’t survive that well, but people can’t keep him forever and soon they will let him go. Everyone hopes he will survive in his journey as an extremely rare albino green turtle so he can have a happy life and probably make more of his kind!

Alive So Far -Chloe Meyering

Tropical Cyclone Winston was the strongest tropical cyclone to hit Fiji on record. It struck the country of Fiji as a Category 5 on February 20th, 2016. Win-ston caused widespread damage on many islands and killed over 40 people. The total damage was estimated at 460 million dol-lars. During Cyclone Winston, Cayla Tikaram tweeted throughout the storm and even had pictures of the damage. Her tweets were: “The house is leaking and everyone’s crying. Planning where to hide when the entire roof comes off” at 1:28 am February 20. “Everyone’s safe & in the cupboard with a mattress against us. No roof, barely any house, but alive so far Thank God. #TCWinston” at 4:35 am February 20. “No idea what is happening with #TCWinston as reception keeps going but thank you all for your well wishes. It means a lot x” at 5:20 am February 20. “Now that the storm has died down a little we’ve started poking around the rest of the house & it’s all gone. The entire roof has blown off and walls crushed in. No

insurance either. 100% one of those surre-al ‘it’ll never happen to me’ moments” at 7:41 am February 20. “Kitchen and living room now mainly wall-less and no roof #TCWinston” at 8:42am February 20. “Daylight #TCWinston” at 1:09 pm Feb-ruary 20. “Can’t even begin to comprehend how we survived. Every room in the house is shredded to bits. #TCWinston Went to go try find my neighbors but their house is wrecked and no ones home #TCWinston” at 2:06 pm February 20. “Love this resilient little nation” at 11:36 pm February 21. “Material possessions are so worthless and unnecessary at the end of the day. Also money is fairly worthless right now because supplies are so limited. So beauti-ful to see everyone sharing what little they have!” at 11:51pm February 21. “What they don't tell you post cyclone: no roof & trees means sun 24/7. (ie, holy moly am I sunburnt)” at 4:30 am February 22. To see the full story go to: http://www.cnn.com/2016/02/22/asia/fiji-cyclone-live-tweets/.

The Chinese New Year - Amelia Cook

The Chinese New Year started this Monday, February 8. This year is the year of the goat/sheep. It is also the start of the Chi-nese year 4713. The celebration is the 7th-the 13th. The legend that started the Chi-nese New Year traditions begins with a beast called Nian. This beast would kill vil-lagers of a Chinese town and the villagers began to believe that if they put food in front of their doors at the beginning of each year, they would be safe. As the legend goes on a villager decides to enact revenge on Nian. The villagers then discovered that the beast, Nian, was afraid of the color red and so when the New Year was about to come the villagers would hang red lanterns, wear red clothes, and shoot off fireworks. Nian never attacked the villagers again.

Fly Geyser United States -Karsen Hax

Fly Geyser is a man-made landform that has a variety of colors. It has a red, orange, green, and brown col-or to it. As beautiful as it is it isn’t for others. It’s on a man’s private property. Some people are tempt-ed by the beauty of this land struc-ture and climb the fence that sur-rounds the area. Todd Jaksick is the lucky person who owns the Fly Gey-ser. Fly Geyser is also known for its hot springs that shoot out from the top of it, another reason there is a fence around it. The owner simply does not want anyone to get hit with the hot springs. Fly Geyser is one of the top ten most beautiful and strange places in the world.

Potato Picture Sold for $1.08 Million -Scarlett Garman

Last year, Kevin Abosch, acclaimed Irish visual artist, took a picture of a simple Irish potato. This photo was sold to an anonymous businessman at dinner for $1.08 mil-lion. This 46-year-old

man, who typically charges up to $500,000, revealed that the sale was the biggest of his career. He made three prints. He kept one in his private collection, another do-nated to a museum in Serbia, and of course the last one sold.

Puppy Monkey Baby -Caylyn Shirey

Mountain Dew’s new rather “creepy” commercial featuring the mixed creature “Puppy monkey baby” is already trending worldwide after the ad debuted during Su-per Bowl 50. As you should know, “Puppy monkey baby” is a puppy, a monkey, and a baby combined. The creature has a pug face. It has baby legs with a diaper. And also a monkey tail, torso, and arms. The ad cele-brates the four new Mountain Dew Kickstart flavors. They are…midnight grape, water-melon, blueberry pomegranate, and blood orange. Kickstart combines three “awesome” things, as the Mountain Dew Company says. Dew, fruit juice, and caffeine. That is why the “Puppy monkey baby” is also combined with three things. The ad starts with the creature walking into a home of three men and giving them each one of Mountain Dew’s new Kickstart drinks. Then, the creature strolls around the living room repeating the words, “Puppy monkey baby.” The creature also licks one man’s face. If you want to see the actual commercial, you can just look up “Puppy Monkey Baby Commercial” on YouTube.

Saving the Spirit Bear -Lizzie Bell

In 2006 it was officially announced that a rain forest in Canada would be nominated to be legally protect-ed. It wasn’t until Monday, Febru-ary 1, 2016, 10 years in the making, that it was finally announced it was protected. Over nine million acres of land will be protected, that is half the size of Ireland. In order to protect this forest, they banned “logging”. Except not from all parts of the rainforest, 85 percent of the Great Bear Rainforest will be illegal to log, but 15 percent will be al-lowed for companies. Do you know what a spirit bear is? Well a spirit bear is a white bear, also known as the Kermode bear (kir-moudi). They are 1/10 of the population of bears. Genes are the reason they are white, well a dou-ble recessive gene. You would think that spirit bears would be related to polar bears right? Wrong! Would you do the same for these rare bears? Would you pro-tect a whole forest for them?

Ten Fun Facts About Pandas! -Logan Ripley

1. Pandas used to be symbol of peace in China. For example, hundreds of years ago, when China was in battle, they would hold up a flag with a picture of a panda on it to call a truce.

2. Pandas have lived on Earth for three million years. 3. Pandas are pigeon-toed. In other words, they walk with their front paws turned

inward. 4. According to legend, the panda was once an all-white bear. When a small girl tried

to save a panda cub from being attacked by a leopard, the leopard killed the girl instead. Pandas came to her funeral wearing armbands of black ashes. As they cried and hugged each other, they smeared the ashes on each other.

5. It takes about five years for a female cub to become an adult and up to seven years for a male.

6. More than half of newborn pandas die from accidentally being squashed by their mothers.

7. Giant pandas do not hibernate because their bamboo diet will not allow them to build enough fat reserves for the winter.

8. In China, they believe that if you sleep on a panda pelt, it will keep ghosts away. 9. Adult pandas are so large, they have no natural enemies. 10. Pandas have a modified wrist which the Chinese call a “thumb” to hold their bam-

boo.

The Ninth Planet ~ Sydney Glass

Can you believe that there is a ninth planet? No, it isn't Pluto, its name is Planet X. There is no real name for it so for now, they call it Planet X. Did you know that Planet X is 10 times bigger than Earth? Planet X is farther out than Pluto! Planet X is also bigger than Nep-tune! Planet X orbits the sun every 15,000 years!

More Than 500 Stranded on Turnpike -Brooke Shaffer

On Friday, January 22, 2016, my family and I were some of the 500 who got stranded on a stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The Blizzard of 2016 hit the northeast around 6pm on Friday. The motorists were stranded for at least 26 hours. The local Fire Dept., Police Dept., and the National Guard came with water and MRE’s (Meals Ready to Eat) for the stranded around noon on Saturday the 23rd. There were a few college basketball teams, a youth group, and a few hundred others. The motorists were starting to get dug out around 1pm on Saturday.
