The SchoolRockridge Secondary School is a co-ed public school founded in 1996 in the municipality of West Vancouver. Rockridge has a total enrollment of approximately 900 students in Grades 8-12. The current graduating class numbers 190.

What’s New at Rockridge 2013/14Rockridge Secondary is a candidate school for the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). The school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School; these are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education. Rockridge students are also offered five premier sport academies including tennis, baseball, hockey, soccer and basketball, for students wishing to develop their potential as a high performance athlete.

Mission StatementRockridge strives to inspire students to achieve their full potential by providing a supportive learning environment rich with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to succeed. By demonstrating moral character through community service, by practicing athletic excellence, by involvement in superior artistic performance, and by actively engaging in critical thinking and creative writing, our students embody the school motto, Esse Quam Videri—To Be Rather Than To Seem.

The School CalendarThree terms over a 36-week school year: Term 1: September–NovemberTerm 2: December–FebruaryTerm 3: March–June

Students take formal school or provincial exams in June. There are three official reporting periods: mid-December, March and late June. We do not produce predicted end-of-year marks. Almost all courses are of full-year duration. Classes meet five times in a two-week cycle and are of 79-minute duration, with a total of 175 class days per year.

Graduation RequirementsCredits for English 10–12, Math 10 and 11 or 12, Science 10 and 11 or 12, Social Studies 10 and 11, plus PE 10, Planning 10 and one Fine Arts or Applied Skills

10–12 are required for the BC Dogwood Diploma. Students must also take a minimum of three other Grade 12 academic courses in addition to English 12. English 12 requires students to write a provincial exam, which contributes 40% to the final mark, with the remaining 60% from school-submitted marks.

Marking SystemRockridge uses an unweighted 100-point system. The following is a list of British Columbia Ministry of Education authorized final letter grades for all courses listed on report cards and transcripts. The GPA equivalent, on a 4.0 scale, is listed for the purpose of US university information only:

Honour Roll / AwardsHonour Roll is achieved with a GPA of 79.5 to 85.4. Honours with Distinction is achieved with a GPA of 85.5 to 100. Calculations are based on courses taken within the West Vancouver School District and on a student’s best marks on 6 of 8 courses in Grades 11-12, and best 7 of 8 marks in Grades 8-10. No failing or incomplete marks are allowed; only courses with letter grades assigned are eligible to be included (see the Rockridge website for further details). The Prestige Award is given to one boy and one girl within the school who have shown outstanding excellence in academics, sports and leadership. The Principal’s Award is given to one boy and one girl in each grade who have shown all round excellence, including exemplary service.

The Super Achievers ProgrammeRockridge is a member of the BC Super Achievers Programme, which is open to students by application. It is meant for those who are seriously committed to high-calibre performing arts or athletics (including, but not limited to: music, dance, theatre, ballet, gymnastics, figure skating, skiing, synchronized swimming, tennis) and who wish to perform or compete at the regional or provincial level. Course requirements are achieved with morning classes, and fixed blocks each afternoon are scheduled as training blocks for artists and athletes in the program.

Clubs and ActivitiesRockridge students are involved in over 20 student-run clubs and activities, with a strong emphasis on humanitarian organizations. Some choose to contribute to one of the school’s publications, such as the annual yearbook. Community service is encouraged through involvement with soup kitchens, volunteering in hospices, tutoring in local schools, and working with various community organizations.

University PlacementsRockridge graduates attend university and post-secondary programs at a rate of 94 per cent (within three years of graduation), compared to a provincial rate of 52 per cent. Approximately 50 per cent of Rockridge graduates attend university outside of their home province.
