What is a Mineral?

Minerals are what rocks come from There are many different types They grow even though they aren't alive Most minerals grow in crystal shapes Many sometimes grow in the same place, so

different crystals all grow together and become very big

How do Minerals grow?

2 WAYS When magma from a volcano cools When water evaporates away so the minerals are

left behind.

How do you know if it is a Mineral?

Each has a different name and different traits Look at the color and shape Is it hard? Does it look glassy or dull? *all of these are ways of determining what kind

of mineral you are looking at

What is a Rock?

You see them in the mountains and canyons!

Its a solid New rocks are always

developing Made up of a mineral or

sometimes more than one mineral

3 Types of Rocks

Sedimentary: when already existing rocks and fossils come together to form a rock

Rock Layers

History is studied by looking at the layers of rocks.

What is in the rocks? The bottom layers are

older than the top layers.

Activity Time

We are going to be making our own Metamorphic Rock!

Supplies: (each person) 1 Baggy of playdough 2 pieces of wax paper 1 Rock paper Hammers that you will

share with your row (I will pass these out)

• *Get colored pencils if you don't already have them at your desk

Steps to Making your Rock!

1. Put a piece of wax paper down on table (as your mat to work on)

2. Make little balls with your playdough3. Put the little balls side by side in any order you

want4. Put other piece of wax paper on top of playdough

(making a sandwich)5. Hammer them together flat6. Form a rock shape with your hands

Activity Continued..

All of the small balls of playdough represented what?

Different little pebbles or rocks (sedimentary or igneous)

When you hammered your play dough what happened?

With the pressure from the hammer and heat from your hands a metamorphic rock was formed
