If you have not yet been to our lovely town, then I hope you make it soon! If you already live here or have made a visit, then

you know how special our area is. Located on the east shore of Lake Ray Hubbard, Rockwall is only 22 miles east of downtown Dallas, 45 minutes from Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport (DFW), and 30 minutes from Dallas Love Field Airport. Our access to these air-ports gives us one of the largest percentages of non-stop air service to every major city in the United States. With our close proximity to the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex, we also enjoy all of the major sports teams, such as the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Stars, Texas Rangers, and Dallas Mavericks.

Rockwall has the feel and charm of a small town with the amenities of a larger city. Our historic downtown area located on the square offers specialty retail shops and fine dining and there are many activities held in this charming location throughout the year. The

natural break that the lake gives Rockwall to the rest of the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex sets the stage for terrific views and beautiful rolling hills. The recent Harbor Development houses The Hilton Bella Harbor, a resort-style property with beautiful views and lake access and a large conference center. The rest of The Harbor is a mixture of specialty retail stores, restaurants, a movie theater, and a public park area with walkways and boardwalks along the water, including a jetty that has public access with a lighthouse! Boat docks are available for our boating visitors to use while dining or shopping at The Harbor.

There are many subdivisions in the area and along the lake that offer a wide variety of homes and prices. Buffalo Creek Golf Club and The Shores Country Club offer golf and tennis amenities, while Chandlers Landing Yacht Club and Rush Creek Yacht Club are full-service marinas for your boating needs.

John Lindsey has heard it all before. He’s heard the doubters and skeptics dismiss his work. He’s heard the UFO enthusiasts

and treasure hunters begging for valida-tion. He’s met the scientists, geologists, and archaeologists who want to learn more.

Through it all, Lindsey, 64, has kept digging. What he’s found has led him to one conclusion:

“We have a very unique situation out here in Rockwall.”

An ancient, buried wall underneath the city might just turn the understanding of man’s origins in North America on its ear. If the wall is, as Lindsey believes, more than 12,000 years old, Rockwall would be the site of one of the oldest settlements of techno-logically advanced humans in world history. “And that,” Lindsay says, “is where it gets controversial, scary, and all the other exciting elements come into play.”

No one — not scientists, not geologists, not archaeologists — has a definitive answer about the origins of the rock wall. Some believe the 3-by-6-mile subterranean struc-ture is the result of natural geological occur-rences. Others think the wall may be the remnant of one of the mythical cities of gold, Quivira, searched for by Spanish conquista-dor Francisco Coronado in the mid-1500s.

Lindsey says his evidence points to a mix-ture of both natural and man-made structures. While he doesn’t think the wall surrounded a city of gold, he got the idea for the Quivira Project from those legends. Although, look-ing back, Lindsey thinks he might have made a mistake with the name.

“It’s been distracting,” he admits. “First of all, when I did it, it was more for fun. I didn’t have any idea of what I was going to run into or that it was going to be as big as it is. I’ve met people that visited Egypt, and people there would ask if they knew about Rockwall or had heard about John Lindsey and the dig out there.

“If I had to do it all over again, I’d select a different name.”

Lindsey, a building designer and amateur geologist, says he is sure part of the wall, maybe even most of it, was naturally formed. Huge sections of the wall are made of a hard, crystalline structure of metamorphic rock.

But there are also areas that he believes are clearly man-made.

“A lot of stones seemed to be placed there,” he notes. “Although they’re made up of the same composition, they’re dating different, and there are doorways, windows, and all these steps going down that have been found in other wells.

“It seems like every time the wall has been dug down there are different features that point to its being man-made,” Lindsey continues. “Well, some of them I believe obviously are; but some of it is nature, which appears to be man-made, but is not. So, it appears to be a combination of the two that we’re getting the data on, which is where I am right now.”

In addition to windows, doors, and steps, Lindsey has found metal rings at the site. There are also carvings that look like maps and writings, but the wall is still a mystery.

So if the structure isn’t entirely natural, and if it isn’t Quivira, what is it?

“To me, from all the evidence I’ve seen, it was quite possibly a sea wall,” Lindsey says. “Going back, even in our own digs, we would find sharks’ teeth embedded in the wall 30 feet down. That tells you that the ocean was there at one time.”

A key way of dating the structure is found in the sediments that cover it. Lindsey believes the evidence points to massive dis-placement of the Gulf of Mexico.

“When we did our big dig-out in 1999 and 2000, a profile about 40 or 50 feet back of the wall showed huge spikes of blue shale, just under the topsoil, laid up against the wall in big spots as if it had been pushed up there by a catastrophic event,” Lindsey notes.

This is the clue that makes the whole mys-tery particularly intriguing, as it may mean that man-made portions of the wall were cre-ated by people employing technologies and knowledge that, until now, scientists didn’t believe existed at the time Lindsey theorizes that the wall was built. The evidence of human construction is side-by-side with the telltale signs of the wall’s age.

“Not only have I found steps, big steps that descended from the top, but we began to find sand dollars, and lots of them,” Lindsey says. “The interesting thing about that is, they weren’t petrified. That meant they weren’t millions of years old; they were thousands of years old, which lent to the idea of a cover-up date of about 12,000 years ago.

“We know the wall was exposed at one time, [but] when did it get covered up?” Lindsey continues. “We’re already talking of dates back 10,000–12,000 B.C.E., and there are very intelligent goings on here at the wall that weren’t supposed to be happening.”

No matter how much Lindsey has uncovered about the wall, there are still more questions.

“[Coronado] was headed this way from Arizona and New Mexico, and at the same time De Soto was crossing the Mississippi headed this way,” Lindsey says. “If the two would have continued their distance of travel, they would have met here in this area. I’m thinking that if they would have continued this way, you have to ask why.”

The Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce fosters a sense of commu-nity and provides its members with

the tools and contacts for success. Along with the annual Business Expo sponsored by the Chamber, informative monthly luncheons, breakfasts, and various business seminars and opportunities are offered to promote lead-ing-edge business education. The Chamber’s directors and staff work diligently to ensure the prosperity currently enjoyed by this thriv-ing community.

Established in 1929, the Rockwall Area Chamber is a member of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which allows it to tap into the experience of more than 4,000 other mem-bers, Texas Association of Business (TAB), and Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives (TCCE). The Rockwall Area Chamber is also an accredited member of the Better Business Bureau of Northeast Texas. The Chamber also has strong ties with the Rockwall Economic Development Corporation (REDC), the city government, and Rockwall’s business commu-nity. The Chamber provides its partners with information on training and education, as well as marketing strategies.

Another key role the Chamber plays in our community is to promote tourism, both on the Web site www.rockwallchamber.org and through distribution of Chamber publi-cations. Along with a member business direc-tory, the Web site features a communitywide calendar. Relocation information is provided through mail-outs and to those visiting the Chamber in person. This relocation informa-tion package typically contains the Rockwall County map and Community Profile & Membership Directory. The provision of these

publications to visitors and telephone inquir-ers promotes both business and tourism in the Rockwall community.

The Chamber has three full-time employ-ees, three part-time employees, and 30 Ambassadors who act as membership recruit-ers and Chamber representatives. Divided into three teams, Chamber Ambassadors also act as volunteers for special events.

The Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce’s five-member executive commit-tee and 21-member board of directors mem-bers’ list reads like a “who’s who” of com-munity business leaders. The Chamber has a very active board of directors who chair and serve on strategic committees. The Legislative Committee monitors local, state, and fed-eral pending legislation that may affect busi-nesses, then takes positions on selected issues and keeps member businesses informed. The Transportation Committee is working with Rockwall County and surrounding cities to bring a unified message to state officials regarding transportation priorities.

Executive Committee

William D. Houser, Chair 2010Bill Houser is an attorney with Jordan,

Houser & Flournoy, LLP, located in Rockwall. Houser is a 2004–2006 Fellow of the American Bar Association’s Real Property, Probate and Trust Section and a member of various committees within that section. He is the marital case law summary editor of the State Bar of Texas’ Real Property, Probate and Trust Journal; a member of the Dallas Bar Association; and active in various industry groups, including the Dallas Estate Planning Council and Estate Planning Council of North Texas. Houser also serves on the boards of the Rockwall Noon Rotary Club, the Rockwall Rotary Foundation, the Rockwall Economic Development Corporation, and the Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce. Houser is a frequent speaker at seminars for both lawyers and non-lawyers. Houser graduated from Baylor University School of Law (JD, cum laude) in 1996 and received his undergradu-ate degree from Baylor University (BBA) in 1993. Houser is the son of missionaries and was born and raised in Kenya, East Africa. He is married to Stacey, and they have three children.

Sandra Doyle, Past Chair 2009A native of Dallas, Texas, Sandra Doyle

earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and a Master of Education in Communications from Texas A&M University-Commerce. Doyle is the director of public affairs for the Mid-Tex Division of Atmos Energy Corporation. Before joining Atmos Energy, Doyle was director of gas transportation marketing for TXU Gas from 1991–2004. During her 25 years in the gas business, Doyle has been active in various industry and community associations. She is a board member of both the Texas Gas Association and the National Energy Services Association. She currently serves on the American Gas Association and Southern Gas Association Public Affairs committees, on the Texas A&M University-Commerce Foundation Board, and as a director for both the North Dallas and Rockwall Area chamber boards.

Carolyn Jackson, Chair Elect 2011Carolyn Jackson joined Tenet in 2002 and

holds the positions chief executive officer of Lake Pointe Medical Center. Under her direc-tion, Lake Pointe Medical Center has received Pathways to Excellence designation from the

Texas Nurses Association and is currently a JD Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital for Maternity Service Excellence. Carolyn has a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware and a Master’s of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School in Boston. In addition to serv-ing on the Rockwall Area Chamber board, she also serves as a director for the Rockwall Economic Development Corporation.

Lou Johnson TreasurerLou is a Certified Financial Planner™ and is

a vice president and trust officer for American National Bank of Texas. She is a current direc-tor for the Rockwall Area Chamber board (having served as both treasurer and past board chair) and is a member of the Noon Rotary Club. Lou has a BBA in accounting from the University of Texas at Arlington and has been FINRA registered since 1998.

Cheryl Dunlop, SecretaryCheryl L. Dunlop has been the director

of administrative services for the city of Rockwall since 1999. In this capacity, she directs the city’s organizational develop-ment, risk management programs, utility franchise compliance, employment law com-pliance, and human resources management.

Margie Hooper has lived in Rockwall since 1976. Hooper holds an MBA from Southern Methodist University, which she attended after earning a bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University. She joined the Chamber staff when she retired from SBC/

Cingular (now AT&T) in 2005. Hooper is also a member of the board of directors of the RISD Education Foundation, serves on the RISD Higher Education and the Rockwall Business Education councils, and is on the board of directors of the Rockwall Noon Rotary Club.

Sharon Vidito, Operations ManagerA native of Nova Scotia, Canada, Sharon

Vidito is fairly new to the Rockwall area. She and her family chose the community because of its outstanding amenities and warm, caring people. Before arriving in Rockwall, Vidito was active in her commu-nity, serving on church and school boards, fundraising for the Heart & Stroke and Cancer societies, and working for SunLife Insurance and Investments.

Kindle Martin, Events/ Public Relations Manager

Kindle Martin was born and raised in Rockwall. After graduating from Rockwall High School in 2000, she became a Kilgore College Rangerette. Martin is an alumna of Southern Methodist University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in business admin-istration from the Cox School of Business. Working in a variety of positions throughout the professional sports/entertainment indus-try led her to Nashville in 2006. She returned to Rockwall in 2008 to coach the 2008/09 RHS cheerleaders. She has been an active volunteer with the Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce as well as many youth organiza-tions across Texas.

As the fastest-growing county in Texas, and the fifth-fastest-growing in the nation, Rockwall County is

succeeding in its mission of diversifying the local tax base to relieve the burden on hom-eowners. Rockwall’s location and amenities make it an easy sell.

Additionally, realizing that networking is essential to business success, the REDC creates a community atmosphere at the Technology Park, hosting an annual appre-ciation event for clients and sponsoring criterion bicycle races.

“Biking is the new golf,” Franza says. “It’s especially popular among Generation Xers, who are the upcoming business leaders.”

Once two separate cities, the residents of McLendon and Chisholm elected to become a single town in 1969. The combined city has cer-tainly come a long way since the late 1800s, when the original town lots each sold for $30. Today, McLendon-Chisholm is a prime example of suburban rural life — with a quaint central business district, live-stock still grazing in the fields, and an economically healthy mix of historic charm with modern-day growth.

Because of their desire to handle growth both efficiently and effec-tively, city leaders added a city administrator to their staff.

“It’s just part of the growth of the city,” says Dave Butler, who was hired for that position in December 2005.

According to Butler, the city is working on plans that focus on expanded parks, retention of open spaces, and added recre-ational opportunities.

“We’re working with all area developers on keeping the small-town atmosphere,” Butler says. “And, even better, they’re very willing to work with us.”

Between 1900 and 1970, the population of this area fluctuated between 100 and 200 people. Currently, the population is estimated at 1,300, a testament to the charm and appeal of this growing city.

With a population of almost 11,000, Royse City continues its rapid shift from a historically agricultural community to a quiet, friendly, residential city. An influx of new families has reduced the average age for residents to less than 32 years old, with an average household income of around $62,000.

Currently, 16 subdivisions are being developed in Royse City, offering more than 3,000 residential lots. Developments adjacent to the city limits place the total available lots in the Royse City area at approximately 10,000.

Along with the exponential residential growth, Royse City has ample opportunities for commercial, retail, and industrial develop-ment. Over the past several years, almost 30 new businesses have come to call Royse City home. scoring on Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) and national norm testing, including the ACT and the SAT. The 2009 TAKS test resulted in a “Recognized” rating for the district as well as “Recognized” or “Exemplary” ratings for all campuses.

The integration of technology in the class-room is a major ongoing initiative for the district. Staff technology training and campus-based instructional technologists are part of the district’s commitment to provide students with technology-based learning opportuni-ties. The computer ratio for RISD teachers is 1-to-1, and the district recently provided lap-top computers to all seventh and eighth grade

students as part of its long-range technology plan.

More children’s activities, more adult lit-eracy programs, and more cozy places to read are some of the treasures in the new Rockwall County Library.

“Circulation of materials increased 85 per-cent in the first six months after the new library opened,” says Library Director Marcine McCulley. “We are able to offer more pro-grams and materials, and more comfortable and inviting interior spaces.”

With 52,000 square feet of space, the new building dwarfs the library’s former location. McCulley notes that the current children’s area is approximately the same size as the entire previous library.

The new children’s area features an appeal-ing cave-like entryway and a story-time room with decorative doors reminiscent of a gate to a backyard garden. Here, children are encouraged to develop a love of reading and to become familiar with and comfortable using libraries.

Sail-shaped computer station dividers and fluorescent light covers that seem to float bring life to the teen room, while the quiet reading room for adults has arm chairs and tables to seat a dozen patrons. Visitors can enjoy a fresh-air read on the patio, accessible from the first floor, or on the second-floor balcony. The library’s “Reading for Adults” program occupies its own office and two classrooms in the new building. Additional amenities include a 200-seat public meeting room, 30 public computers with Internet access and Microsoft Office applications, and six group study rooms. Free wireless Internet is acces-sible throughout the building, and beverages and snacks are available in a small café.

Rockwall County voters made the library possible with an $11.5 million bond; the Friends of Rockwall County Library raised an additional $400,000 in donations for the project.

L ive theater, choral performances, public statuary, and scholarships to provide private lessons for promising young

artists are just a few of the ways the Rockwall County Alliance for the Arts promotes artis-tic expression.

“We want to support and encourage the development of organizations that will bring any form of art to our community, whether it is painting, music, drama, or any other media,” says Rockwall County Alliance for the Arts President Kathleen Morrow. “We believe art enriches the lives of our citizens.”

Activities spearheaded by the Alliance include:

The Alliance raises funds for its Open Door • Grants to help local arts organizations such as Rockwall MusicFest, Rockwall Community Playhouse, and the Rockwall Children’s Chorus.

Scholarships are funded for promising • young artists through its Youth ArtReach Grant program. These grants help gifted young people who otherwise might not be able to afford private lessons in their media.The organization’s Artists in Residence • program brings a wide variety of visual and performing artists to the area, who give performances and instruction to Rockwall’s elementary school students. The Alliance Gala is held each October and • is an important source of funding. The gala features dinner, dancing to live music, a celebrity art auction, and a celebrity dance contest.

According to Morrow, the Alliance con-tributed approximately $30,000 to grant pro-grams in a single year; yet they were still only able to fund about 50 percent of community

requests. The group hopes businesses in the booming city will invest some of their prof-its in the arts, as it has been demonstrated that cultural amenities are key when new businesses or residents are considering a community.

“We are very interested in finding busi-nesses that would contribute part of their profits for artistic pursuits, such as placing a sculpture in the city or county,” Morrow says. “The city is growing very fast, and we hope our new residents will assist us in making our community a lovely place to live and to visit.”

As part of its Art in Public Places Program, the Alliance has raised approximately half of the estimated $100,000 needed to produce Discovery, a life-size sculpture depicting the discovery of the rock wall for which the city is named. The City of Rockwall has pledged a matching grant of $30,000 toward the project.

Rockwall MusicFest• brings live music performances to the city each year. An outstanding philharmonic orchestra comprised of area musicians is assembled for the annual event.

Rockwall Community Playhouse• produces six main-stage productions each season. The playhouse makes its home in a building that once served as a church in the heart of Rockwall.

Rockwall Children’s Chorus• is a countywide choir for boys and girls in grades two through nine. Choir members receive a challenging music education and performance opportu-nities. Membership is by audition.

Lakeside Civic Chorus• was formed in 1984 to provide high-quality choral performances of nearly every period of musical history. Chorus members and patrons raise money for music scholarships at accredited area universities.

Rockwall Art League• hosts lectures and workshops in a variety of media. They too provide art scholarships.

Rockwall Community Band• boasts approximately 30 musicians play-ing American standards. The band actively recruits new members to join them in entertaining at concerts, parades, and festivals.

Rockwall County Historic •Foundation maintains a permanent museum and actively preserves local oral history.

Stilt walkers, food vendors, professional music acts, and living history exhibits are among the crowd-pleasers at the Rockwall Founders Day Festival.

“It’s a family environment,” says Brad Griggs, director of the Rockwall Parks, Recreation, and Right of Way Department, which sponsors the festival. “We put some-thing on there that everyone can enjoy, free of charge.”

Activities are often educational as well as fun. “We recently started out the festival with a children’s animal act,” Griggs says. “We brought different varieties of snakes, hawks, and a possum and provided the audience an educational background on each animal.”

Musicians playing the festival have ranged from Elvis impersonators, to Beatles tribute bands, to country and polka acts. In addition to the stage shows, visitors will see magicians, unicyclists, and stilt walkers mingling among the crowd. Fine arts and

craft and jewelry vendors are on hand to sell their wares, and craftspersons dressed in period costumes demonstrate historic crafts such as blacksmithing, wool spinning, and butter churning.

The festival is held on Rockwall’s his-toric courthouse square, which includes buildings dating to the early 20th century. Founders Day is each year on a Saturday near the end of May. The 2010 festival is scheduled for May 22.

Waters that have been a training spot for an Olympic gold medal-winning sailor are the venue for Dallas Race Week, a premier sailing and charitable event held annually on Lake Ray Hubbard. Rockwall is home to 2004 Athens Olympics gold medal-winning sailor Paul Foerster.

Top sailors from around the area, includ-ing Olympic, world, national, and regional champions, compete each year for the grand prize. Over 50 yachts measuring in size from 22 feet to 40 feet with three to 12-man crews have competed. Many of the competitors are members of the Rush Creek Yacht Club, which has been training national and interna-tional prize-winning sailors of all ages on Lake Ray Hubbard since 1969.

One of the most beautiful sights of the week, sailboat racing at sunset, is viewable at the Harbor in Rockwall. Dozens of yachts can be seen racing within 50 yards of the Harbor breakwater each evening. Seats aboard Seawolf, a 40-foot custom wooden catamaran, are also available for fans wishing to watch the races from the water. In 2008, the event fea-tured a new race course designed specifically for spectators at the new Bella Hilton Hotel at the Harbor.

Sail boat dealers test new yachts at the event, and numerous fundraising dinners and receptions accompany the event in Rockwall Harbor’s public gathering spots. Proceeds ben-efit the Rockwall Breakfast Rotary Club and its projects to promote economic development, hunger relief, literacy, and health care.

Dallas Race Week is held each June on the week bridging the summer solstice.

Visitors enjoy viewing and buying the wares of nearly 200 different artists and crafts-men at the Aspasians Fall and Spring Art fairs on the Rockwall Square. Both fairs are one-day events and are always held on Saturday. The fall fair is a September event, while the spring fair occurs in either April or May. In addition to arts and crafts, the events also fea-ture food vendors serving turkey legs, barbe-cue, kettle corn, and other items. The first fair was comprised exclusively of Aspasian-made handcrafts and food.

The Aspasians, a club unique to Rockwall, began the fair over 30 years ago to help local students realize the dream of a college educa-tion. The organization grew out of the work of a Rockwall chapter of the national women’s philanthropic organization Epsilon Sigma Alpha. Desiring to devote their time and energy exclusively to local needs, members of the Rockwall chapter dropped their affiliation with the national organization and formed the Aspasians in the 1970s.

The Aspasians have awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to graduates of Rockwall and Rockwall Heath High Schools.

Relying primarily on their personal resources, the Aspasians also provide Thanksgiving food baskets and Christmas gift baskets each year to the community’s needy

families. The Aspasians also send gifts to U.S. military personnel serving overseas.
