Buck is currently enrolled in the Equine Training Program at the Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He started his rodeo career in 2006 with the Saskatchewan High School Rodeo Association (SHSRA) and has been very successful in the Junior Steer Riding at various levels including the Calgary Stampede. In 2009, Buck began his Bareback career, and in 2010 he became the Novice Bareback Champion at the CCA Finals. Buck won the 2012 Year End Award and the Finals Championship in the SHSRA. He was also awarded the Cowboy of the Year at the same time, which is something he is very proud of. COWBOY OF THE YEAR CARL BARRETT

I would like to thank Envy Night Club for the commemorative buckle and the Saskatchewan Fellowship of Christian Cowboys for the leather bound Bible..

I am very honored to receive this award because it reflects on the accomplishments and work I’ve done in rodeo, especially the Canadian Cowboys Association that I am proud to be involved in. But more important , to me, is not the individual spotlight but it recognizes all the people that helped me get started as a contestant and then on to being a contractor. And that’s what I feel I want to do is contribute in helping other get started and carry on the sport of rodeo and the CCA.

The one thing that has changed in rodeo is the contestants used to be from ranch and working cowboy

backgrounds and now rodeo has expanded into the urban areas and cowboy and cowgirls come from all walks of life. Rodeo has become a lifestyle and sport for everyone to enjoy. The one thing that hasn’t changed is the family you develop on the road. Everyone helps each other and the legacy continues as new people enter rodeo and join the family.

I would like to thank my wife Muriel and my family for the help and work with our stock contracting business.

Thank you very much.

Carl Barrett.

CCA RODEO NEWS DECEMBER 2012 – PAGE 13

General Manager’s Report What a great Finals. The competition level in the CCA is incredible. I talked to many veterans who visited our booth and they said that this was pro quality rodeo!. Congratulations to all the contestants for their performance in and out of the arena.

I had a chance to meet and get to know a lot of you and had the chance to meet with several business suppliers and current stakeholders looking at ways to improve our operations.

Many of our sponsor partners came out to see the Finals and thanks to all of you who stopped by to visit . They really enjoyed the rodeo and meeting many of you.

We started the day after looking at ways to improve the next year’s finals and conditions for contestants.

Over the next two months we will be doing our best to introduce a budgeting and planning process. The current revenue model hasn’t been looked at in several years. Inflation and the normal pressures of operating in today’s economy have to be addressed. The last 14 months have been focused on expenses and sharp controls on expenditures and now we need to begin setting out clear plans for the next 1-3 years

We are committed to finding ways to resource enhanced service including better ways to handle entry day and producing the draw. We will look at technology to improve access to all the services

contestants need.

Using technology is not always the easiest thing to incorporate in the rodeo business but the whole world has moved on and we all use it for every other business and service we use outside rodeo. There is very little mix of old paper based administration and electronic delivery that works. The thing to keep in mind that the change to technology doesn’t change the raw performance of rodeo but it will change the way the producers, contractor and secretaries do business and at the same time improve communications and service to contestants.

One of the main focus will be on the 50th

Anniversary. This landmark year is important, not only in being a milestone of significant accomplishment, but tying in all the builders before us and creating a vision for the future. Our builders and former members are key to the next step of growth.

The annual convention is coming fast Feb. 8-9 2013. Get your policy requests and any other operating suggestions in to the office before mid January.

We had two unfortunate injuries at the finals, Heather Weatherly was hurt while sorting horses and ended up in the hospital for a few days but I’ve been told she’s healing and well and on her way to a full recovery.

We send our best wishes out to Heather .

Jonathan Kmita the CCA president broke his lower right leg while competing at this year’s finals in the bareback event. He also ended up n the hospital for a few days and is now home now healing.

We wish Jonathan our best wishes for a full healthy recovery.

As always we are always available anytime to answer any questions.

Merry Christmas , best wishes and Blessings to your families and see you in the new year.

Mark.

COWGIRL OF THE YEAR Since I was lost for words when I was presented the 2012 Cowgirl Of The Year award, I would like to take this opportunity to thank so many.

To start, I thank the Envy Nightclub for sponsoring such a gorgeous buckle and the Fellowship of the Christian Cowboys for the beautiful hide covered Bible.

Huge thank yous to all of you that have helped me with rides for the timers. It is very much Appreciated !!

Thanks Marla Grad & Nicole Kmita for guiding me through your past duties as director & always there to answer my many questions.

An Extra Special Thank You to Laurie Johnson Barton for EVERYTHING you ALWAYS do to help me, and others, without ever batting an eye! I am extremely lucky to have such an amazing friend!

Chrissy Hunter & Jen Early, what a relief to have you around at the rodeos especially with me being a new mom for the 2012 season.... I value your friendship and your love for Falon.

I definately could not have achieved this award without Kory & Falon, Thank you for your love, inspiration and endless dependability. I love you very much, I couldn’t be who I am today without you.

Thank you to my family for always supporting me down the path of rodeo.

Of course I could not be a cowgirl without my horses, Grinch & Almond thanks for carrying me through another season :) I am so TRULY HONORED to receive such an amazing award, thank you again!

I hope that everyone is having a wonderful winter, hope you guys are keeping warm! For the ones who were able to make it to Agribition this year, you will already know that it was a huge success! I would like to send a humongous thank you to everyone who helped sell 50/50 tickets and was there to support our fellow High School Rodeo contestants. You did an amazing job and we appreciate it very much! I am not sure if many of you knew this, but the Monday evening of our High School Rodeo was dedicated to Breast Cancer. A few of the high school contestants and our National Director Howard Floyd went to the hospital (right beside the rodeo grounds) to visit some cancer patients. This was a great experience for all of us and I am very happy that I was able to be apart of it. I would like to say best wishes to everyone who is fighting through their sickness and you will always be on our minds. Thank you to all of the SHSRA members who participated in our breast cancer night and I hope that you had fun! I was very honoured to carry the Canadian flag each night in the grand opening of the CCA rodeo. Thank you to everyone who helped me out throughout the week. It was a privilege to meet up with some of our sponsors at Agribition this year, and I would like to thank all those who sponsor and support High School Rodeo. I hope that everybody has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, I will see you all this spring :)
