Mr. Arun nAndAChairman, Tourism and Hospitality Skill Council

dear readers,

Hope you all enjoyed the first Volume of AAROHAN.

THSC is committed to addressing the challenges of employment and employability of the Youth of India. It is estimated that 12 million people enter the workforce in India every year who not only need to gain employment, but who also need to have the required skills for different job roles. While this is a large number in itself, added to this, is the complexity that about 93% of workers are in the informal sector which is transient in nature. This clearly is an indication for all planners and policy makers to prioritize employment

generation via all avenues to keep the youth of the country constructively and gainfully employed. Towards this end Tourism plays an important and crucial role.

Tourism and Hospitality Skill Council (THSC) takes a multi pronged approach to Placements. All training and placement efforts are backed by Demand Aggregation from the Industry. This is most certainly a strong step towards achieving the larger goals of Mission Skill India. THSC is committed to work towards bridging this gap between Industry and Skilled youth to ensure opportunities for jobs and self-employment through platforms like Campus Placements, Job Fairs and our digital portal https://thsc.skillgrid.in.

Industry Leaders, Training Partners, State Skill Missions and all stake holders in the Skilling Eco system must come together as one aligned force with THSC so that we truly reap the benefits of having a young population in terms of economic growth and inclusiveness while fostering prosperity for all.

TOURISM FOR ALLABOUT TRAVEL AND TOURISM INDUSTRY

Tourism is the largest industry of the world. It is the sum of the phenomenon and relationship arising from travel and stay of non-residents as far as they do not lend to permanent residence.

Tourism is probably the first largest foreign exchange earner and therefore has unprecedently multiplier effect on development and economic change. Tourism singly can solve our balance of payment problem as witnessed and recorded in the case of several countries of Asia-Pacific. It is a fast emerging and developing industry, which has probably no match in the Indian industrial scenario.

Tourism is the only subject which can provide complete knowledge of our great country i.e. our culture, traditions, our social history, hidden treasures of our country (natural beauty, monuments, places of pilgrimages etc.), development scenario and aspirations. Tourism is the pass out for international understanding, peace and prosperity.

GlobAl ToUriSm

The travel and tourism industry is one of the world’s largest industries with a global economic contribution (direct, indirect and induced) of over 7.6 trillion U.S. dollars in 2016. The direct economic impact of the industry, including accommodation, transportation, entertainment and attractions, was approximately 2.3 trillion u.S. dollars that year.

Worldwide, the tourism industry has experienced steady growth almost every year. International tourist arrivals increased from 528 million in 2005 to 1.19 billion in 2015. Figures were forecasted to exceed 1.8 billion by 2030.

TO URISM IN INdIA-SOMe FACTS• Tourism in India is the largest service industry and ranks 7th in

• Ministry of Tourism is the nodal agency to formulate national policies and programmes for the development and promotion of tourism

• Concerted efforts are being made to promote newforms of tourism such as rural, cruise, medical and eco-tourism

• India’s thousands of years of history, its length, diversity and the variety of geographic features make its tourism basket large and varied.

Tourism in India broadly classified in North Indian Tourism, East Indian Tourism, West Indian Tourism, and South Indian Tourism. Each part of India offers identifiable differences from the rest of the nation. Tourism in India has come into its own as a brand – India Tourism. The creation of niche tourism products like heliport tourism, medical tourism, wellness tourism, adventure tourism, cruise tourism, and caravan tourism has served to widen the net of this sector. Inbound tourism is booming and the country is going all out to lure more travelers from around the world. Contrary to perceptions across the world that tourism in India is still confined to traditions, the country is opening up with trendy tour packages and affordable air travel deals to woo inbound visitors from every segment.

5

India offers various tourism options due to its vastness and diversity, attracting tourists from all over the world. The country boasts of natural treasures like mountains, ocean, seas, deserts, rainforests, valleys etc. on one hand, while world-class healthcare infrastructure on the other, which provides varied kinds of tourism options such as adventure and rural tourism, sustainable tourism/eco-tourism, cruise tourism, golf tourism and medical tourism to the travelers.

The Ministry of Tourism started the scheme of rural tourism in 2002-03 with the aim to showcase art, rural life, and culture and heritage to the tourists at various rural locations and villages. The Ministry intends to help the local community economically and socially, together with facilitating interaction between the local population and tourists, through this scheme. On 28 February 2011, 169 rural tourism sites in 28 States/Union Territories have been sanctioned by the Ministry of Tourism. This segment has also been winning accolades in the international circuits as well. For instance, the Rural Tourism Project at Hodka village in Kutch District of Gujarat won the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) award for the year 2010 under the Heritage category.

Sustainable Tourism growth is in the process of evolving the Sustainable Tourism Criteria for India. In recent years tourism industry in India has registered a considerable growth. A Steering Committee with representatives from all the sectors of the tourism and hospitality industry of India has been constituted to develop draft Sustainable Tourism Criteria which would eventually be adopted by the different sectors of the industry.

Wellness tourism is about travelling for the primary purpose of achieving, promoting, or maintaining maximum health and a sense of well-being. Health Tourism holds immense potential for India. The Indian systems of medicine that is Ayurveda, Yoga, Panchakarma,Rejuvenation Therapy etc. are among the most ancient systems of medical treatment of the world.

Adventure travel involves exploration or travel to remote, exotic areas. Adventure tourism is rapidly growing in popularity as a tourist seeks different kinds of vacations.

India is one of the most lucrative medical tourism markets in the world. The sector is witnessing remarkable growth on the back of Government support through policies and initiatives, low cost, less waiting time and healthcare infrastructure. The growth in India’s medical tourism market will be a boon for several associated industries, including hospital industry, medical equipments industry and pharmaceutical industry.

Cruise tourism is emerging as one of the most dynamic segments of the leisure industry globally. India with its vast and beautiful coastline, forests and undisturbed idyllic islands, rich historical and cultural heritage, can be a fabulous tourist destination for cruise tourists. The Cruise Shipping Policy of the Ministry of Shipping was approved by the Government of India on June 28, 2008. The objectives of the policy are to make India an attractive cruise tourism destination with the state-of-the-art infrastructural and other facilities at various parts in the country; to attract the right segment of the foreign tourists to cruise shipping in India; to popularize cruise shipping with Indian tourists.

As they say, you earn your trophies at practice, but you pick them up at competitions. Representing India on a forum as magnanimous as this is only the beginning of my journey at WorldSkills 2017. With the aim of giving it my best shot and doing my country proud, I’m looking forward to interacting with some of the most skilled competitors and mentors in the field, who I’m sure to draw inspiration from. As Leonardo Da Vinci said, “Learning is the only thing the mind never exhausts, never fears, and never regrets”, I hope to take back life lessons from here.

The participants and the winners have been recognised and felicitated at various events and panels since the competitions.

We live in a time where change is not just inevitable but is radical, in every facet of life. Consequentially, I believe, it is the learner who inherits the future. And one must never forget that the expert was once an amateur. It is at competitions of this nature and repute that the artist refines his skill and fine-tunes his craft. It is here that mentors also become learners, imbibing fresh perspective in their pursuit of excellence, as they train their mentees. Personally, representing India as a WorldSkills Expert is nothing short of an honour and privilege for me.
