SATOBPAT, SEPTEMBER 18, 195* Whether decorating a new room or revitalizing an old one, a first item on jthe “must buy" list may be carpet. Mental notes must be made on your color preference, type of furniture you plant to buy—- conventional, modern or a com- bination; location of the room—- hallway, stairs, living room, bed- room and the home traffic—- number of adults, children and pets who walk across the floor daily. With these notes in mind, search out the most reputable retailer you can find. You may need nis help in the future, in case anything goes wrong. Car- pet almost always represents a sizable investment. Ifyou are carpeting hallways, children’s rooms or busy living rooms, such patterns as tweeds, homespuns and designs will wear well and not show dirt easily. Quiet colors are generally recom- mended for bedrooips. Either subdued or lively tones are fine for living rooms, depending on your preference. The Carpet Institute points out that the height of the pile (how deeply you sink into a car- pet) isn’t a yardstick, since low as well as high pile carpets can be# of top quality. The institute also says that no one weave is better than another in the same price range. How to Care for Carpets. After you have chosen the carpet in the right color, fiber and price range, the big and year-long question is: How to you care for it? First recommendation is to put a padding under a carpet for longer wear. Carpet-sweep your room every day and give It a thorough vacuum-cleaning at least once a week. For surface brightening home care, sponge the pile surface with a liquid cleaner, a dry cleaning liquid or one of the synthetic types diluted with wa- ter. Absorbent powder cleaners also brighten the surface. Do not use soap, since it may cause a bleeding of colors or some dam- age to the wool. To remove spots from carpets with wool or cotton yarns or man-made fibers: use a clean, slightly damp absorbent cloth or white blotting paper to take up liquids. Scraps up semisolid liquids. Use cold water or a neu- tral synthetic detergent to re- move soluble material. If has not disappeared after the carpet is dry, use a cleaning fluid or call in a pro- fessional rug spotter. Dry-cleaning fluids are pre- ferred on frieze and looped-pile carpeting and for butter, oil and cream stinas. The water treat- ment is recommended for stains from acid substances, followed by an alkaline solution to coun- teract the acidity. Here are some other spot- cleaning remedies: Use water or water and a soapless cleaner to remove beverages; dilute nail enamel with lacquer thinner or polish remover on all but ace- tate piles or acetate and wool blends. Washable ink can be re- moved by water. Soapless clean- er is best*for milk. Test Chemical First. These rules are good to re- member: Always test the chemi- cal on an inconspicuous area; use the minimum amount of material to remove the stain and ' work the spot from the edge ] toward the center; neutralize all : acids and alkalies; raise and lay 1 the pile with a comb in the right direction after the spot has been worked; allow the carpet to dry* with sufficient airing to prevent mildew. If a cigarette bum chars the surface of the carpeting, care- fully clip away the blackened ends of the tufts. For I more serious bums, consult a proses-. sional carpet repairer or your dealer. , Reverse your carpet to equal- ize the wear on it. Scatter rugs of the same pattern thrown in I front of chairs will make those heels easier on the carpet. If furniture has flattened the pile, I try' a hot iron over a damp cloth to raise it.
