Student Handbook NotesEach month a couple areas of the student handbook will be highlighted.Don’t forget the full student handbook can be found under the “Parents& Students” tab on our website at http://rw.lapeerschools.org/ Thismonth’s focus is on volunteering and parent pick-ups.Oce check-in is required for all visitors. Please enter through the doors leading into the main oce.Rolland-Warner—parking lot on M-21/Genesee RoadParent volunteers make their school a better place for all students. Please visit our LCS website orcome to the main oce to obtain the proper documentation and procedures for becoming a volunteer. This must be done at least one month prior to an event to allow processing time. The approval maytake up to 30 days and must be completed every three years. Volunteer forms can be found in theoce.Something that the school secretaries are required to do is to check ID’s for parents, guardians, andfamily that they may not know or recognize when you come in to the oce to check out a student. Iknow how it can be inconvenient to come into the school from the parking lot, and be told you need togo back out to your car to get your ID. For that reason, please bring your ID in with you when pickingup a student from school. While this may seem like a hassle, safety is our number one priority andmaking sure we are checking ID’s is vital part of this process.Speaking of volunteering, parents who are new to the middle school know that the opportunities thatare available to volunteer are a lot different than the elementary schools. Because students switchclasses every 50 minutes, there really is not a “home room” where parents can stay for extended timeand help work with students on projects like in the elementary school. This doesn’t mean we can’t useyour help though! Events like the can/bottle drive are a great opportunity to help out. Other

Positivity ProjectThe Positivity Project continues to be an exciting opportunity here at RWto teach all our students how to have positive peer interactions! This weeks lesson on Perspective was an important lesson that I neededa refresher on, as many times in our busy life we forget to nd or ask theperspective of the other person. For example the other day my daughterstated she didn't want to go to practice and before she could even nishher sentence I was telling her she was because you play how youpractice and you made a commitment to the team! When I was nallynished she explained that the teacher was having a study session soshe could retake a test. My lecture could have been avoided if I had only let her explain the situationfrom her perspective. Many times here at the school the students share their side of a story from theirperspective. It is imperative that we realize there is another side to every story and most of the time thetruth lies somewhere in-between.

Box Tops for Education has went Digital!!!No more cutting and mailing Box Tops that took hours to complete! Now simply download the Box Tops for Education App, selectRolland-Warner Middle School, and snap a photo of the receipt! Curriculum UpdateQuestioningAnother approach that might be different from when we were in school is the strategic use ofquestioning in classrooms. In the past, when we, as students needed assistance, our own teacherslikely helped us to memorize steps or showed us how to look up answers. The tasks students are beingasked to engage with now are more complex and have many possible solutions. This shift matchesour need to adapt to an ever-changing and advancing society. While in the past, many careers involvedrepetitive tasks and the need to be skilled at memorization, modern society requires us to draw fromcurrent resources to create new ideas and apply concepts in innovative ways. Because of this, today’s teacher is often a facilitator of thinking. While students collaborate to discuss, debate, and draw conclusions, teachers deepen and challenge their thinking with powerful questions.Cognitive learning science tells us that asking questions vs telling or lecturing to students helpslearners to retain more knowledge and promotes deeper understanding.

They will also participate in basketball skills in NorthBranch and two Track and Field events, one in Lapeer and one at Carmen Ainsworth Middle School. There are more outside opportunities for these students and Ms. Gould is planning a parent meetingto inform those students who qualify to participate about all of the other events and opportunitiesoffered in our area.

Organization is Key!!!You may have attended the 10 Steps for Academic Success presentationduring our schedule pick-ups with Mrs. Taylor and found that a majorroadblock for student's success is organization. While this certainly isnot new news and should come as no surprise, we took a step back anddetermined that to this point in elementary students were told how to beorganized (typically the nightly planner) and forced to daily use thisorganization. Then at middle school we allow the student to choose howto be organized (if at all) and don't necessarily force usage. This year, lessons were specically designed and implemented in iConnect to allow students theopportunity to peruse multiple organization systems and decide which would work best for them.Students were to bring in any supplies they needed and build this system with their iConnect teacherbased on their Organization Action Plan (you should have seen this come home). We still have 10-Pocket Folders for sale in the oce for $4! Help your student by checking in weekly on their organization method and we will do the same with aweekly check-in during iConnect!

Title 1 & 31a HappeningsDid you know that all activities and programs in a School/District Improvement Plan are research-based? Each building's SIP cites research to support the activities that they plan to use to improveinstruction and learning for students. A Title I requirement is that the "design of services is evidence-based".

Math SupportMath instruction has changed a lot since most of us were in school. It’seven changed a lot since I was teaching 10 years ago. Traditional mathinstruction of the past involved the teacher teaching a concept, doingsome practice problems on the board, and then giving students time todo problems on their own. What you didn’t nish in class was homework. What educators were nding though is students could do short cuts like long division, but wouldstruggle to grasp any mathematical concepts, which is far more important to real everyday life.At Rolland-Warner we have CMP Math Program which is a problem-centered math curriculum. Thismeans that mathematical concepts are embedded in interesting problems. As students explore aseries of connected problems, they develop understanding of the embedded ideas. With the aid of theteacher, students abstract powerful mathematical ideas, skills, and problem-solving strategies. CMPstudents are developing mathematical habits of mind: solving problems, reecting on solutionmethods, examining why the methods work, comparing methods, generalizing methods, and relatingmethods to those used in previous situations. In class, students solve mathematical tasks. The class usually begins and ends with the teacherleading class discussions. During the class, the teacher monitors group work, making informalassessments of individuals and the whole group, and adjusting their teaching as they gatherinformation. Students ask questions, pouring over their individual and collaborative work, makingsuggestions for improvements, and in the process making their own sense of the ideas being studied.Analyzing and critiquing the reasoning of others helps students strengthen their own understanding.Students record the learning of mathematical ideas, procedures, and vocabulary in notebooks. Thenotebook becomes a valuable resource for students with notes, vocabulary explanations, and workedexamples for future reference. Please visit https://connectedmath.msu.edu/families/ for a ton of resources on how to help your childwhen they are struggling with the CMP math.
