On Friday, October 30th, Lincoln Envirotown held their Rolleston Responsible Business Awards presentation i n r e c o g n i t i o n o f businesses’ contributions to environmentally sustainable business practices. Businesses have been performing so well in these assessments that new categories appear to be required each year! Initially starting with Bronze, Silver, and Gold; a Platinum challenge was added in 2009, while this year a new Diamond Category was introduced. This new category celebrated the community leadership of the business. Amazingly, six out of 56 Rolleston businesses were awarded Diamond placings this year and such was the level of entries, that all achieved Silver or above, with six reaching Platinum level. The Diamond Award winners were; Garden View B and B, Independent Signs, Kiwi Flora

The Men’s Shed, Rolleston, now has a complete woodworking shed and meeting room.

The year is about finished and what a year we have had at the Men’s Shed. We are really making progress with our woodworking shed (now complete) and our meeting room (all enclosed). The kitchen and toilets are almost finished, so all is looking great. The latest edition is our engineering shed and that should be erected before Christmas. We have also had a spend up on equipment f o r t h e w o o d w o r k i n g department, thanks to a grant from Infinity Foundation. An excellent result and much appreciated. The contract for the driveways and landscaping is due to be awarded within the next week, so that will see the grounds tidied up and looking complete. We will celebrate a wonderful year at our Christmas Party on December 6th with a BBQ to be held at one of our member’s homes. A very big thank you to

all of our members who have assisted us throughout the year and we look forward to another very successful year in 2016. We are still collecting batteries so give us a call and we will pick-up. We had a stand at the Rolleston Fireworks on Saturday night, November 7th and had many

enquiries from new members. It’s great to get our name out in the public arena. To all those who have donated goods, services or money to the Rolleston Men’s Shed, we thank you for your assistance.

Judging by the initial enthusiasm of the schools, it’s expected that well over 150 trees could go into schools this year. and potentially around 1,000 trees could well be planted during the next five years.

Dur ing the Respons ib le Business Awards last year a local Izone business owner, Alan Alan Alan Alan Peacock Peacock Peacock Peacock of Independent Signs, along with the L incoln Envirotown Trust, discussed the funding for putting fruit trees into every Primary School in Selwyn. Alan saw it as a community initiative aimed at healthy food for children, as well as encouraging Environmental Sustainabil ity. While Alan canvassed local businesses for support, Lincoln Envirotown liaised with all the schools as to their requests and plans. Recently the planning stage of the project was complete and trees were delivered to, and planted at, the first six schools to participate in the scheme. Weedons School was the first to receive their plants and Sarah Sarah Sarah Sarah Walters, Walters, Walters, Walters, Deputy Mayor of Selwyn helped the School’s Enviro Club students plant the first tree. Rolleston and Clearview Primary School had theirs delivered and planted fairly soon afterwards. Aurelia Wilberforce, Aurelia Wilberforce, Aurelia Wilberforce, Aurelia Wilberforce, from Lincoln High School was the delighted winner of the Best Junior Concept category at the Bright Spark Awards, held in Auckland on October 29th. Aurelia’s winning idea was called ‘Wakey Wakey’ and is a psycho alarm clock, unable to be silenced until it is sure the owner is fully awake! Many can relate to an incident involving an alarm clock blunder; not hearing an alarm, or hearing it and hitting snooze, or even just turning it off altogether - only to fall back to sleep and wake an hour later in a panic. All these scenarios can lead to a person being at work or school and still feeling half asleep, as well as late! This is what inspired Aurelia to create her award winning app. “I created it because one day I was running late for school, had a math's test first up and felt half asleep, so I was thinking about how I could fix this and create something to wake me up properly and more efficiently. I decided to create something which had a horrible sound that would actually wake you up as I quite often find myself

sleeping through normal alarms. An approaching science fair prompted me to actually create the concept and when a teacher informed me about the Bright Sparks competition it was a chance to enter it as well. I did all the programming myself.” explained Aurelia. Her alarm is one that cannot be ignored! It features the ten most annoying sounds in the world, according to science, polls and Aurelia’s ear, and it cannot be turned off until the owner has completed a task designed to involve all parts of the brain, making sure that the owner is fully awake before being able to shut down the alarm. Although the project has been a huge success for Aurelia, It has not been allplain sailing though. She has struggled through varying methods and protocols, coding, crashing and dyslexia made the task more challenging too, “I struggle with reading, because I’m dyslexic, which means very scientifically wri t ten info is near impossible to read and understand. I eventually got around this by creating flowcharts which planned

exactly how I would do it .” Aurelia was delighted to receive recognition for her creation at the Bright Sparks awards. Celebrating its fifteenth anniversary, the Bright Sparks competition was launched to encourage and connect students with an interest in technology, who will be the nation’s future engineers, electricians and programmers. Entrants walked away with a combined prize pool worth $10,000 and unrivalled exposure in the technology industry.

Selwyn’s first Diwali Celebration was held on Saturday, October 31st on the Green behind the Lincoln Library. Diwali (or Deepavali, the ‘festival of lights’) is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated each year, in the Northern Hemisphere autumn, which is New Zealand’s spring. At their inaugural attendance of the Synchronised Swimming National Championships, held in Dunedin recently, five girls from the Weedons based, Small Strokes Synchro Club returned home with some pleasing results. The event was attended by 97 swimmers from New Zealand, Russia and New Caledonia, with the four days of competition being fiercely contested. to Selwyn Food and Wine Trail.

The Selwyn Food and Wine Trail took ‘Selwyn to Town’ for three days, and attended the Christchurch A & P Show last weekend. Not just an appearance though, the exhibit was judged the Best Outdoor Site - Medium Exhibitor. The site, designed by Cressy Lane, featured a pergola area so people could sit and relax, along with four custom built

tasting areas where visitors could chat with knowledgeable and passionate Selwyn Food and Wine Trail members. The site also contained a retail area featuring a selection of fantastic Selwyn Food and Wine Trail products. Over the three days visitors experienced Emilio’s cheese, wine from True & Daring, Ngapuarata and Braided River, delicious dressings and

crackers f rom Langda le Vineyard Restaurant, natural fruit drinks from Aroha and a tasty array of treats from Gunyah Country Estate. The aim of the event was to promote Selwyn District by providing an enticing taster and encourage visitors to the District. It was a great success for all involved and definitely achieved its goal outstandingly.

This was very successful and they were rewarded with a fifth place. The Club was also recognised for its team spirit when it was awarded the ‘Artie Artie Artie Artie ShawShawShawShaw’ trophy for this aspect of

Clearview Primary School students in Years 1-4 enjoyed a fantastic sunny day for their recent Junior Athletics.

The children competed in a variety of modified run, jump and throw events including vortex and bean bag throwing, obstacle

course jumping and fun relay running events. Stickers were awarded to those who made notable improvements

On November 4th and 5th, students from Rolleston School p e r f o r m e d t h e i r l a t e s t production, entitled ‘Twisted Tales’. It was comprised of six plays based on Roald Dahl’Roald Dahl’Roald Dahl’Roald Dahl’s comical collection of ‘Revolting Rhymes’. The rhymes are parodies of traditional folk tales in verse and a re-interpretation of six well-known fairy tales, featuring surprise endings in place of the traditional happily-ever-after. The plays included by students were Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, Goldilocks and The Three Little Pigs. Each play was performed by one Year 7 or 8 class and combined into a full production. All students from Years 7 and 8 were involved in the production in some way, either performing, stage management, props or various behind the scenes roles. There was plenty of opportunity for crowd participation, as each play included classic pantomime fun. and loveable characters. It was great to see so many students involved and see the talent we have being displayed on stage. “The whole school and

"At the moment it's the power companies that have all the power and solar looks like it's being actively discouraged," Gareth said. Electricity companies slashed their buy-back rates between fifty and seventy per cent in November last year. “Right now our electricity company is buying our excess electricity at ten cents per unit, and selling it on to our next-door neighbours at full price. In summer, they drop it again to

seven cents. It doesn’t really seem fair,” Tony added. Under Gareth’s bil l , the Electricity Authority would independently set and review the buy-back price instead of the power companies. Around fifty countries already have set feed-in tariffs for renewable energy. “When we got the solar panels installed the power company wrote to us saying they were decreasing the buy-back rate,” Tony commented. “They said they wanted to bring the buy-back rate into line with other power companies. To my way of thinking, what they were really saying was, ‘we want to make more profit by giving you, the customer, less’.” Tony and Denise retired to Rolleston from Duvauchelle Bay, and looked to solar as a way to reduce their energy costs while living on a fixed income. “Our home is fully insulated, with double glazing on the windows, and our heat pump is our main

source of heating,” Tony said. “After getting solar installed, our average power bill between March and August this year was $66 and that will only decrease as summer approaches. Investing in solar was about looking after us in our retirement and, looking after the environment. “We were fortunate to have the capital for a solar PV system from the sale of our last house in Duvauchelle Bay, but not everyone will be in the same boat as us. If Gareth’s bill sets a fair buy-back rate, the pay-off period for a solar unit would decrease, making it a more affordable investment for more people. In fact, we find it’s better than money in the bank.” By removing the ‘ridiculous red tape’ around installing solar energy and securing fair buy-back prices, Gareth hopes his bill will help New Zealand achieve its goal of ninety per cent renewable electricity by 2025.

On Thursday, October 29th, the Clearview Senior Choir joined 4,000 other pupils from Christchurch schools to sing at the Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival. The 76th annual event was held at Horncastle Arena and featured a “Ring of Fire!” theme. The theme was chosen to reflect New Zealand’s position on the giant fault line that rings the Pacific Ocean. This year’s song list was inspired by countries that border this group of faults and volcanoes stretching up from Antarctica, through to Russia and the Philippines.
