Newbuild construc- tion yards are finding that slots are filling quickly, and remaining that way, and backlogs are grow- ing. Best of all, this trend should continue over the next 12 months and beyond. The number of boats listed in this year’s survey grew by about 32 percent, from 564 last year to 745 this year. Crewboats, crew/supply and personnel launches exploded from a low of six last year to 26 this year. Supply boats actually dropped slightly, from 56 last year to 54 this year. However, there are quite a few OSV contracts that were not reported to us for inclusion in our survey. Excursion, dinner, and sightseeing boats doubled from last year’s four boats to this year's eight vessels. The survey is compiled from questionnaires, boats covered in WorkBoat over the past 12 months (March 2012 to March 2013), websites, press releases and other announcements, financial reports, and various other sources. Several yards have only one boat listed. However, that does not mean the yards have no other newbuilds under contract or underway. For assorted reasons, certain operators do not want their boats included in the survey, and some yards request that some con- tracts not be disclosed. Consequently, the number of actual vessels under contract, under construc- tion or delivered over the past year is higher than our numbers reflect. This year’s annual Construction Survey confirms a trend that we’ve been following for more than a year. Newbuild construc-

tion yards are finding that slots are filling quickly, and remaining that way, and backlogs are grow-ing.

For assorted reasons, certain operators do not want their boats included in the survey, and some yards request that some con-tracts not be disclosed. Consequently, the number of actual vessels under contract, under construc-tion or delivered over the past year is higher than our numbers reflect.

In many cases, we could provide a more accurate number because we are aware of certain contracts that compa-nies have requested be omitted.

The numbers and how they break down, however, are an accurate repre-sentation of trends within the shipyard market.

The Spill Response category took a major leap this year, from 13 in last year’s survey to 32 this year. The Deep-water Horizon accident and oil spill in April 2010 was a major reason for the uptick in activity.

This is the first construction survey in over 15 years that does not include SeaArk Marine. The Monticello, Ark., boatbuilder has suspended newbuild construction until the economy re-bounds enough to warrant getting back into the industry.

Tidewater is no longer building new vessels at its Quality Shipyards locations in Houma, La. However, the shipyard is still involved in repair work.

Non-Self-Propelled Vessels made the biggest gains over last year. Its num-bers jumped from 42 last year to 138 this year. It makes sense that as the oil and gas industry in the U.S. Gulf gains strength, demand for crewboats, crew/supply boats, supply boats, platform

supply boats and anchor handlers would grow as well. But barges are still an important part of activity at many Gulf shipyards.

The Gulf of Mexico oil and gas industry is the biggest driver of new workboat construction in the U.S. But there are a couple of contenders com-ing up the ranks: exploration activity in the Arctic and wind farms off the East Coast of the U.S.

Shell Oil hopes to take another shot at drilling exploratory wells in the Arctic this year. But both of Shell’s Arctic drilling rigs need major work before returning to the Arctic in 2013.

The rigs are being sent to Asia to be repaired. The setbacks raise questions on whether Shell can resume drilling in Alaska this summer. Last year, the oil giant only drilled two top holes before the seasonal drilling window closed.

Meanwhile costs, opposition and other factors are slowing the launch of wind farms along the East Coast that could lead to a boon in the design and construction of wind farm service and construction vessels to support that industry.

If the Arctic and wind farm industry take off, our survey could include even more boats in the next few years.
