Rolling in the Right Direction

Part of the Aurubis Group

Aurubis is the leading integrated copper group and the world’s largest copper

recycler, producing some 1 million tons of copper cathodes each year and from

them a variety of copper products. Production expertise is the strength and the

driving force of our success. Aurubis has about 6,300 employees, production

sites in Europe and the USA and an extensive service and sales system for

copper products in Europe, Asia and North America.

Thanks to a wide range of services, Aurubis ranks among the global leaders in

its industry. The core business is the production of marketable copper cathodes

from copper concentrates, copper scrap and recycling raw materials. These

are processed within the Group into continuous cast wire rod, shapes, rolled

products and strip as well as specialty wire made of copper and copper alloys.

Precious metals and a number of other products, such as sulfuric acid and iron

silicate, round off the product portfolio.

Our ProcessesAurubis Buffalo Our Products

The manufacturing process starts with a mixture of scrap metal and raw materials (copper, zinc, nickel and others).

This metal is melted down in one of our Casting Furnaces and turned into large bars of rectangular brass or copper called “cakes”.

Each cake is approximately 1 foot thick by 2.5 feet wide by 30 feet long.

Aurubis Buffalo produces the copper and brass rolled sheet and strip used to make a wide range of traditional products such as roofing copper, brass hose fittings, and deep drawn stamped products.

Other products include heat-transfer technology for products from vehicles to buildings; manufacturing goods, from caskets to zippers; electronic technologies for connector strips, circuit coolers, and electronic batteries; and rolled copper plate in finishes to suit any architectural design. 3Aurubis Buffalo

In the Hot Roll the Cakes are reheated and hot rolled into metal sheet which is then coiled into a roll of material called a “coil.”Next, the outer surface of the coil is chipped away or “milled” in our Torin Milling line to remove impurities and oxidation.

After the Torin, the coil is cold rolled to thinner gauges depending on our customers’ needs.

The cakes are sent via railcar to the next operation in the plant called the Hot Roll.

The thinner coil is then heat treated or “annealed” to create softer material according to customer specifications. This process can happen in any of our continuous Strand Anneal furnaces or in our Bell Anneal furnaces.

Coils are processed in our Tension Leveler or Stretch Bend Leveler to create a very flat profile from one edge of the metal coil to the other, improving quality.

Material will then proceed for additional cold rolling, or be sent to one of our Slitters where coils are cut into thinner widths of strip material.

Some of the slit coils will be sent on to our Connector Strip Department where material is dipped in a tin bath, coating the surface of the strip with tin. This process increases the corrosion resistance of the brass or copper material. These products will be used to transmit electricity in electronic connectors used in batteries, computers, phones and automobiles.

Some materials are then ready to be packaged for Customer Delivery.Other material is sent on to our Press Room where punch presses create deep drawn stamped products.

Coil, strip and sheet Products that leave our Buffalo Plant are shipped to over 125 customers in 10 countries around the world.

At Aurubis Buffalo, we feel that dedication to quality and customer service is the best way to assure the success of the company and its employees.
