Rollin Office of Student Services offers a number of programs and services designed to provide academic and social support to our growing international student population.

ESL Program Students coming from countries where English is not a primary language are provided with weekly English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction during their first year at Rollins. Those who have attended college in the US (or another country where English is a language) are exempt from the program. ESL classes incorporate instruction and practice in English reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

Through the Global Peer Network, international students are paired with domestic students who are familiar with the language and culture of the U.S. and who can provide support and friendship to incoming international students. In addition to meeting on an individual basis, GPN participants are invited to social events throughout the school year.

IThe Office of Student Services puts out international student newsletter with academic, social and career information of interest to international students.

Volunteer Peer Editors (VPE’s) International students who would like assistance editing their papers throughout the school year can request help from one of Rollins’ Volunteer Peer Editors (VPE’s). VPE’s are MPH students with native English speaker proficiency who volunteer to help international students “clean up” their writing and check key elements such as grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Conversation Practice Sessions Conversation practice sessions are offered weekly to students who want additional practice speaking English. Topics range from work, hobbies and school to the values, norms and traditions of students’ home cultures. Each session is limited to five students to ensure each student is able to fully participate.

Our website provides information on the ESL program and recommendations and tips for international students as well as links to additional resources. The link can be found under the Rollins Life

homepage: https://www.sph.emory.edu/rollins-life/resources/international-students/index.html.
