ROM-SIG NEWS, Vol.5, No. 2, Winter 1996-97

Shalom, friends,

Last summer, during a brief trip to Israel, I visited Zichron Yaakov and itshistoric landmarks. I was awedby the wall at the entrance to the town, withthe names of the founders. Many were Romanians, who came to Palestinewith one of the earliest Zionist pioneering movements. To my dismay, I didnot have a camera nor anything to write with. I felt I had lost anotheropportunity to supply information to you, our subscribers. I hope that one ofyou will remember this on your next trip to Israel. Please stop for awhile inZichron, and copy down those names for us! And by the way, it is a lovelyplace with aview of the entire Mediterranean coast. Nowonder itwas one ofthe first settlements!!!

Our thanks to those who contributed for the first time in this issue: Don

Lockhart, Dr. I$ic Svar$z-Kara, Jeremy Paecht and Howard Margol. Wethank Dr. Marcel Bratu and Monica Talmor, for their continuing support;onceagain theirresearch is included in our issue. We haveheard from manyof our readers who have been delighted with Dr. Bratu's work on names, andMs. Talmor's efforts at making the Dorohoi book accessible to us all.

In editing this issue, we faced decisions as to what our readers might findmost helpful, which items are time-sensitive and therefore should be givenpriority when there is more than enough material for the issue, selecting areader-friendly format, expanding the number of pages (which we decided todo), acquiring permission of authors and even seeking a new printer (note:Sam Elpern has relocated and has a new mailing address). However, it isyour feedbackthathelps us decide subsequentdilemmas thatarise. Please letus know how you like this issue, its length, format, etc. We aim to please!

New SIG for Sephardim

As Dr.Bratumentioned in our last issue, some 10,000 Sephardic Jews settledin Wallachia, Transylvania and Dobrodgea in the 17th century. Even beforethen, throughout the Middle Ages, there was a small but documented influxof Sephardim into these proto-Romanian regions. Communities of Sephardim are still found today throughout the Mediterranean basin, in Israel,Turkey, Greece, England, Holland, Latin America, and the United States.

Now, a Sefard Special Interest Group (SIG) has been formed to provideresearchers of Sephardic interests with a forum for the exchange ofinformation, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, case studies, and resources.Initially, the SIG exists solely as a forum at the JEWISHGEN web site.English is the preferred language, although other languages are permitted.

. If you wish to participate in the forum, send an eMail message to<[email protected]> to learn the procedure for subscribing.

The Surnames of the Later Ashkenazi Jews

in Romania

by Marcel Bratu

The Jewish population in Moldavia and Wallachiaincreased almost threefold in the 19th century, from100,000 people in 1800 to 260,000 in 1900. On theone hand, the number of Sephardim in Wallachia didnot increase, since they had few children. InMoldavia, on the other hand, the Ashkenazim had atremendous birth rate, but that can not account for160,000 Jews added at the end of the 19th century. They came from somewhere else: many Ashkenazimcame down into Moldavia from the Polish territories.

What does this migration have to do with the names ofRomanian Jews? This is the story I want to tell you.

The Ashkenazim were forced to take on surnames at

the beginningofthe 19th century, to be identifiable fortaxes, military service, and other administrativefunctions of the various governmental authorities. This was much later than the Sephardim, who gainedtheir surnames in the 14th and 15th centuries. The

Ashkenazim (Ashkenaz in Hebrew means Germany)were spread throughout Central Europe (Austro-Hungary, Prussia, Bohemia) and there were hugenumbers in eastern Europe (Poland and Russia).

However, as usually happens in history, there weresome exceptions. The most impressive exceptionoccurred in Frankfurt am Main in Germany, during the17th century, before all the Jews of Prussia hadsurnames. At that time, Jews were forced to live in aghetto area on a street called "Judengasse." Becausehouses didn't have numbers, each tenant would paintor carve a sign on the front wall of the house, to beidentifiable and to avoid opening a neighbor's door(with or without intention). These signs—flowers, animals, birds, fish, trees—became very dear to theJews, because they loved their house and family. Theyeven carved or painted these signs on the gravestonesin the old Jewish cemetery in Frankfurt. Thus, thesesigns naturally became the surnames of the Jews whenthe authorities followed a French initiative to

introduce house numeration on the streets.

Let me give you a few examples:

. Trees'. Apfelbaum (apple); Birnbaum (pear);Gruenbaum (green tree)

. Flowers: Rosen, Rosenthal, Rosenfeld;Blum (flower), Blumenfeld

. Animals'. Hirsh(deer); Ocs(ox); Tauber (dove);Einhorn (unicorn); Hirshorn (deer antler)

. Fish: Fishel (small fish); Laks (salmon);Hecht (pike)

These signs remained on the wall of the house longafter the house numbering. A small house at 148Judengasse bore a sign that was a red shield. Thus, the family adopted the surname of Rothschild (inGerman), and later became famous as the greatestfamily ofJewish bankers.

Later, in Austria (1787), the Jews were compelled totake a surname. After the first partition of Poland(1772), Austria gained Galicia, western Podolia,Lemberg (Lvov) and part of the Krakow area. MariaTheresa, the Austrian empress, was terrified by thehuge number of Jews in the captured territories, especially because she had bad feelings for the Jews. She never spoke to a Jew face to face unlessseparated by a screen. But her inconvenience wasshortened by her death in 1780. Her son, Joseph theSecond, insisted that the Austrian Jews, includingthose from the occupied Polish territories, have aGerman surname. All of these Jews with names in the

form of X ben Y were now to have a German name,

even though their secular language was Yiddish, andthe language of their Bible was Hebrew. Nastybusiness!

Prussia, another power that occupied Polish territoryafter the three partitions, became the landlord of theso-called Polish Prussia, including Danzig (Gdansk)and Thorn, all the way to Mazovia and Warsaw, comprising another area with a large Jewishpopulation. In 1812, the Prussians also forced theJews to adopt a German surname. In this way, theJews from central Europe and from half of Poland'sterritory had German surnames. Despite theresemblance ofYiddish and German, the Yiddish was

Page 6: ROM-SIGNEWS - JewishGen Winter...ROM-SIGNEWS, Vol.5, No. 2, Winter 1996-97 Shalom, friends, Last summer, during a brieftrip to Israel, I visited Zichron Yaakov and its historic landmarks

ROM-SIG NEWS, Vol. 5, No. 2, Winter 1996-97

written in the Hebrew alphabet, creating somedistortion of the German surnames borne by the Jews.Surmounting some legal limitations concerning thesesurnames, they obtained beautiful family names, someofthem of the upper class.

. From Ehre (honor) came Ehrenburg, Ehrenkrantz

. Krone (crown), to Kronenfeld, Kron

. Susse (sweet), to Sussman

. Schone (nice, beautiful), to Schonfeld, Schonblum

. From precious metals: Goldenberg, Gold, Zilber,Zilberman, Zilberstein.

. Names ofprofessions: Kaufman (merchant),Drucker (printer), Gerber (tanner), Becker (baker),Zimmerman (carpenter), Goldstein (goldsmith).

. Names ofgeographic origin: Alpern, Elpern,Halpern, Heilprin (from Heilbronn), Berliner,Epstein, Ginsburg, Gruenberg, Kissinger (fromKissingen), Lifshits, Popper, Weisel, Wiener

(from Wien, Vienna), etc.

. Names ofspecific places in Galicia and Bohemia(territories occupied by the Austrians): Apter(from Apatov, Galicia); Brandes, Brandeiss (fromBrandeis, Bohemia); Dolinsky (from Dolinsky,Galicia); Eger, Ieger, lager (from Eger, Bohemia);Potok (from Potoc-Zlaty, Galicia);Horowitz and all its variations (Horovice, Bohemia)

. Names ofcountries and regions: Oistrach(fromAustria); Ungar (from Hungary); Pollak, Polaner(from Poland)* Wallach (from Wallachia)

These German surnames of the Jews coming intoRomania suffered two metamorphoses: first, many ofthem were translated into Yiddish; and second, thespelling was adapted to the Romanian language, whichis a phonetic language. For instance, "Peter" ispronounced 'Teeter" in English. The first -e- is readlike an -ee-, the second like the -e- in "pet." InRomanian, the letter -e- is always pronounced as in**pet." The same consistency applies to all the lettersof the Romanian alphabet. For this reason, Gruenbergbecame Greenberg, Goldstein - Goldstain, Gruenspan- Grinspan, and Susseman - Zisman.

Meanwhile, what happened in Russia? The threepartitions of Poland were a pantagruelian feast thaterased Poland from the map of Europe. Russiaacquired White Russia, Bielo-Russia, Ukraine,Lithuania and other territories, filled with hundreds ofthousands of Jews. Catharine the Great, the empressof Russia, disliking the Jews, was terrified by theiraddition to her empire. She proclaimed that allforeigners would be naturalized, but she added,"Krome ZhidoV (except the Jews). However, as withMaria Theresa, her Jewish nightmares didn't last long;she died in 1796, one year after the third partition ofPoland. In 1893, the next Tsar, Alexander the First, passed a law stating that every Jewish family musthave a surname that could not be changed. X ben Y9followed in the next generationby Z ben X could notexist any more. Yet, the surname did not have to beRussian, unlike the Austrians and Germans requiringGerman names. In general, the surnames were acombination ofa Yiddish name with a Russian suffix.

. In one area, Obauch, 50 per cent of the Jewishsurnames had the suffix, "man":Dorfman, Perlman, Feldman, Fridman, etc.

. East ofVitebsk, the suffix was "son" or "zon":Idelson, Davison, Mendelson, etc.

. In Bielo-Russia and Ukraine, the suffix was "sfy':Shamansky, Kaganovsky, Yankelevsky (beautifully derived fromthe diminutive form, Yankele),Levisky, etc.

. Lithuanian names, usually geographical places:Dolinsky (from Dolina); Melnik (from Mielnick);Dubin (from Dubina); Rogov (from Rogovo);Zager (from Zagora), etc.

. A very common suffix in all ofthe Polish capturedterritory was "icfJ: Smilovici, Leibovici, Hersco-vici, Bercovici, Solomovici, Rabinovici, Calmano-vici, Abramovici, Leizerovici, etc. These surnamesare known as "Polish" (mostly, they are patronymic surnames). Some ofthe names were altered inRomania to change"sky" to "schi" or to replace-s- with -z-, -g- with -gh- (Sager became Zagher).

Page 7: ROM-SIGNEWS - JewishGen Winter...ROM-SIGNEWS, Vol.5, No. 2, Winter 1996-97 Shalom, friends, Last summer, during a brieftrip to Israel, I visited Zichron Yaakov and its historic landmarks

ROM-SIG NEWS, Vol. 5, No. 2, Winter 1996-97

Ever since the Bible first appeared, the Jews haveliked acronyms and word combinations. They haveused them in surnames as well: Katz or Catz is acombination of Cohen and Tzadfle; Segal is acombination of Segan and Levy; Conn comes fromCohen. These are very common names.

All of these Jews in these immense territorieswandered from place to place, trying to avoidpersecutions and pogroms. Due to their marriages orchanges ofnames to avoid taxesand military duties, itwas often impossible to locate the origin of theirsurname. But who cared? A Jew is a Jew!

The migration of the Jews into Romania, in the 18th,19th and 20th centuries from the different Jewishsubcultures in Galicia, Poland, Russia, and Bessarabiabrought anonomastic wealth thatwassometimes veryconfusing. Mixture of these later Jewish surnameswith theones mentioned inmyfirst two articles helpedto complicate matters.

Further, the Jews often liked nicknames much morethan surnames. They paid more attention to the firstname and nicknames, and often used only these toidentify an individual. So, when you are examiningold documents, what looks like a surname mayactually be a nickname. I remember a man known asSloim **Chibrit" (match). I have no idea what his realsurname was, and this was true ofmany other Jews inDorohoL I knew another one, Meilah "Plop"(poplar). He was a very tall man like a poplar, butcertainly he had a surname which was less known intown. My father had an uncle known as Mendel*Tipirig." This word means "ammonium chloride" inthe Moldavian dialect, a substance used in glueingcopper. There must be an interesting explanation(which I don't know) for this nickname ofmyfather'suncle, whose real name was MoscovicL

These were the surnames of the Jewish people fromMoldavia, Wallachia, Bessarabia, Bukovina,Dobrodgea and the southern part of Transylvania, upuntil World War II. What happened after that war,and some other onomastic curiosities may be thesubject ofmy next article.

As genealogists, we emphasize advance planning. This article illustrates that no matter howextensivelywe mayplan aheadfor research infacilities abroad, results are still unpredictable.

During a recent trip to London, I contacted the JewishColonization Association, hoping to gain access to theirarchives for research into my family's involvement withJCA in Bessarabia. Since beginning my research I hadwritten and faxed them and received no replies, so I didnot notifythem in advanceofmy interestin research.

Upon arrival, I phoned the office. I was informedthat thearchival materials (263 boxes) were stored in severallocations in and around London and that it would take5-7 working days to round up the materials (it wasntclear whether they would gather them in a locationsomewhere for me to use, or whether they would bebrought to the London office). Additionally, theindividual responsible for the archives, Mr. Julian Kay,was out of the office on holidayand would be back oneday before my departure.

I set up an appointment to visiton the dayofhisexpectedreturn and asked that materials about the current JCA

operation be prepared for me. I alsoasked to purchase acopyof the book An Outstretched Arm: A History ofthe Jewish Colonization Association (323 pages) byTheodore Nonnaa I phoned on the appointed day, onlyto be told that Mr. Kay was again out of the office, thistime on a personalemergency. However, he had left thematerials I askedfor, and we agreed that I wouldstop byto pick them up.

I received a lovely copyofthe annual reportofthe JCAaswellas a copyofthe book I requested I offeredto payforthe book and was told that there was no charge;however,a contribution wouldbe welcome. I gladly obliged

My Search for Groslovoby Donald Lockhart

A year ago I set off in search of my wife's ancestors, looking first for her great-grandfather, Pesach Perloff. In short order, I unearthed Pesach's naturalizationpetition, which stated in bold and legible script that hehad emigrated from the shtetl "Groslovo, Russia" in1904. Locating that town on a map took me thebetter part of the year. Along the way I discovered afew sources of interesting information.

The first source I consulted was a conventional one, thepreeminent shtetl guide Where Once We Walked(WOWW), by Gary Mokotoff and Sallyann AmdurSack. WOWW contains an entry for "Grosolovo" butdoes not list its coordinates, referring the reader toPinkos HakehMoU Rumania - Vol I (PHRl) and theGuide to Unpublished Materials of the HolocaustPeriod (GUM).

I found PHRl on the shelves of the Hebrew Collegelibrary in Brookline, Massachusetts. The chief librarianthere, Dr. Maurice Tuchman, kindly let me know whichpages of PHRl—written in Hebrew— referred toGrosolovo. At the summer seminar in Boston I cornered

Professor Dov Levin of Hebrew University, and hegraciously undertook an on-the-spot translation of therelevantpassages from these pages. Grosolovo, it turnsout, was the site of a Nazi labor camp during theHolocaust Probably for that reason, PHRl focuses onthe plightofthe Jews who were transported to the town, not on the lives ofthose who inhabited it before the Nazi

invasioa PHRl dki provide chies about the locationofGrosolovo, however. PHRl states that in the early1940s Grosolovo was located within the district of

Tirashpol, and that it was 35 kilometers from the cityofTirashpol itself; it does not mention Grosolovo'sdirection from Tirashpol On modern maps, Tirashpolappears in eastern Moldova, not far from the border withUkraine, which lies farther east. Because Moldova wascarved from what used to be eastern Romania—an area

once known as Bessarabia, to confuse things further—the evidence from PHRl suggested that Pesach's shtetlwas a Romanian one. This view was reinforced by thesimple fact that Grosolovo is included in a Romaniavolume ofPinkos HakehiUot.

I found the GUM at Brandeis University's GoldfarbLibrary. The GUM indicates that Grosolovo was thesite ofa Nazi labor camp and that it was located in anarea called Transnistria. According to theEncyclopedia of the Holocaust, Transnistria "is anartificial geographic term, created in World War II; itrefers to the part of the Ukraine conquered byGerman and Romanian forces in the summer of 1941,which Hitler handed to Romania as a reward for its

participation in the war against the Soviet Union."The region was located "between the Bug River inthe east, the Dniester in the west, the Black Sea in thesouth, and a line beyond Mogilev in the north."Based on this evidence, I reasoned that when Pesachlived in Grosolovo between 1878 and 1904 the town

was under Russian control, that it was ceded toRomania during World War II, and that perhaps itwas returned to the Soviet Union after the war, ultimately falling within the territory of Ukraine.Grosolovo was treated in a Romania volume of

Pinkas Hakehillot, it seemed, because the seriesfocuses on the Holocaust period, during which timeGrosolovo was in Romanian hands. This analysis, however, even if correct, did not assist me much inpinpointing the location of the town on a map.

With lingering questions, I approached Mr. Mokotoffat the summer seminar. He seemed surprised at thebrevity ofWOWW's entry for Grosolovo and offeredto review some of the sources he had used in

compiling the book, to see what light they might shedon the subject. Ultimately he wrote me a letter inwhich he noted the coordinates of "Grosulovo," aslisted in the Defense Mapping Agency list of towns:47 degrees 04 minutes north and 29 degrees 52minutes east. These coordinates placed Grosolovo inmodem day Ukraine, but there was no town by thatname on modern maps, no matter how detailed.

My next step was to consult the 1970 edition ofOfficial Standard Names Approved by the UnitedStates Board on Geographic Names, known as the"BGN." The BGN listed Pesach's shtetl under the

spelling "Grosulovo" and it gave the samecoordinates as noted above. Next to "Grosulovo,"

the BGN noted "see Velikaya Mikhaylovka." My(continued on page 32)

CENSUS OF THE JEWISH POPULATION LIVING IN

PODU ILOAIEL ROMANIA AS OF 1898as extracted from the State Archives in Iasj, by Dr. Itic Svart-Kara

and discovered for ROM-SIG by Nat Abramowitz

Podu Iloaiei, a small and poor town in the Moldavianregion ofRomania, does not appear on many maps. Itis about 17 miles west and slightly north of the famouscity of IasL Yet a book of 168 tightly printed pagesabout this town's Jewish life was published in 1990,describing (in Romanian) its history, local economy, cultural activities, synagogues, rabbinical traditions, etc. Of special interest to genealogists, the book alsocontains several censuses of the Jews living in thistown. The earliest was dated 1824 and the latest

1898. It is the 1898 census, consisting of some 723names and taking up just 26 pages, that we haveextracted and translated

The task was a truly communal one: Nat Abramowitzdid most of the translation, but several of the archaicwords for various occupations stumped him. We sentthe words out over the Internet to over 140 of our

members and elicited many replies. In particular,Sandi Goldsmith just "happened" to be in Bucharestand engaged the entire staff of her husband's branchoffice in solving the definitions. Also, Marcel andMary Bratu pulled out their own ancient dictionaryand defined many of the words.

The book is Ob§tea Evreiasca din...Podu Iloaiei(The Jewish Community of Podu Iloaiei), and issubtitled 'Tages from the History of a MoldavianShtetl." Much ofthe narrative material was written byDr. Kara, although several others also contributed. We believe that many of the first 97 pages, whichprecede the census tables, would be of interest to ourmembers, but we need one or more volunteers toreview the material and translate the best parts intoEnglish. Any volunteers?

In translating the census table, we encountered severalodd words and apparent inconsistencies. Where therewas not room to comment within the table, weinserted a code, such as lacJ. All such codes areexplained in a list that follows the table.

We also include here a list ofthe occupations found inthe census table. This may be useful for our readerswhen translating other documents.
